In today’s Part 1 episode Laszlo explores the early life of Zhou Enlai, growing up in a traditional scholar-official’s family that had seen better days. Zhou gets passed from relative to relative. But each step of the way there were mentors and breaks that he was able to make the most of. We can see through his early years and into his teens how Zhou was perfectly trained and tested for the larger job that lay ahead.

Exactly. No matter how you feel about Communism or the CCP, any country would have been lucky to have had him as its leader.

Great first episode - you're right I've never really heard a hard word against Zhou during my years in China... Which is more than I can say for some of his peers

The only criticism I ever heard from my Chinese friends and colleagues was for enabling Mao. But in the grand scheme of things, he was extraordinary.

Hi Laszlo, do you have a podcast playlist that covers the Ten Year Civil War from the 1927 Nanchang uprising to the 1937 X'ian incident and the Second United Front? Including The Long March and the Jiangxi Soviet?

I don't have any one single series but I've covered this period in the Deng Xiaoping, Zhou Enlai and John S. Service episodes...and a couple others I think.

Good podcast. Except Jingye should be "professionalism" and Xiaofeng, "school tradition". Meanings are lost if you break up Chinese phrases. Chinese people themselves do it all the time, but it is a misunderstanding of the Chinese language. Just like the word "redoubtable" cannot be broken down into re-doubt-able.

It actually can: « able » show the word is an adverb, « Redoubt » more or less « to fear » can be further broken down : « re » again, « doubt » doubt, doubt again. Sure the meaning has evolved somewhat but the word can indeed be broken down ...

Really appreciate these videos of yours, been interested in 1900s chinese history for the past year. Currently reading the controversial "Mao: The Unknown Story". Are you knowledgeable enough to give an opinion on what's likely to be true in the book and what's not? Even if you don't have anything else than an uncertain laymans perspective on it it could make for an interesting podcast (the book is afterall signficant for the people and topics you cover). Thanks for the channel, Laszlo.

That book caught a lot of flak. I thought it was OK and certainly contributed to the history of Mao. I still have it on my shelf.

Cool to hear your opinion! It's kindof amazing to have your series on Zhou now, in addition to the book (just gotten to his more major introduction). I find myself enjoying this vast intricate story of China, even with its many tragedies. Thanks for your work!

I wonder how things could have been different for China, and for Communism in general, if Zhou was the leader of PRC instead of Mao from the start....he seemed way more interested in public policy.
