Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai is one of the four major Chinese folk legends. It is an orally transmitted legend that tells the tragic love story of Zhu Yingtai, who disguised herself as a man to study and met her classmate Liang Shanbo, but ultimately could not marry him. In 2003, the government of the People's Republic of China applied for the Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai legend to be listed as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity established by UNESCO. In 2006, it was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists of the People's Republic of China.
