Another nice reaction, Jack. There is one thing that you stand out from other KZbinrs who did reaction video. You always did your homework and looked for the background of the song (or the subject) before the reaction. 👍👍 You deserve more subscription. I saw the lyric translated in English in another reaction video. Before that, I mostly paid attention to the melody and the way that ZhouShen sang it. I didn't notice until then that the lyric was actually rather nice. Although my first language is chinese, the lyric is not exactly modern chinese so I didn't completely understand it before I saw the English version. Ironic. 😂

画绢: Painting on Silk. A brief interpretation of the song, done with this background and setting in mind as follows. Basically this song is about the challenges faced by a novice painter in the Tang Dynasty era (唐朝 Táng cháo 618 to 906 A.D.) to gain accreditation as Painters. During this 唐朝 Golden Tang era, Chinese painting also developed dramatically including the prestigious Landscape “Shanshui” (山水畫mountain-water) painting, using ”丹青DanQing”, a “Tang era’s creation of two mineral colour pigments; vermilion (bright red) and cyan (greenish blue) that were not easy to fade. “丹青DanQing”paintings on silk would out last all others. As such the term was often used then as a metaphor for steadfastness, endurance or excellence in many references: Danqing Painters/Masters. DanQing became a reference for quality in paintings/arts. In “山水畫”Landscape painting the purpose was not just to reproduce exactly the appearance of nature but also to grasp an emotion or atmosphere so as to catch the "rhythm" of nature. The standard of painting skills then, was exceptionally high. Besides, the celebrated painters must also meet the “诗书画三绝 The Three Perfections” criteria. Ie. excellence in poetry, painting, and calligraphy. [霜雪河岸轻轻飘来羽衣 我堆积心绪 在雾中寻你 你已经渐渐远去 青草离离柳依依] The first few lines were about “time; the precise timing needed to capture the “exact emotion of the scene” the subject of the painting. Here’s our young artist, in a frosty cold winter dawn, wearing his feathery cloak, filled with enthusiasm / anxiety, rushing to the landscape, but missed the moment as the “desired rhythm of the scene” have since gone farther away. He reluctantly left the beautiful scenic place. [倾尽丹青 想要画出你] He applied his utmost in “丹青DanQing” , in planning to paint out the landscape. Meaning he did his very best, using the “丹青DanQing”in every sense of the term; advanced technique, colour and personal attitude. [织染署中吱吱呀呀的细语 我在彩色风中重逢你 你给的眼神如玉 惊鸿一现留心底 敛墨三生] In so doing, the novice artist also had to learn and understand how the silk was being woven and dyed and the type/texture of silks there were, as all these would affect the painting procedure. The visit to the silk factory was essential. At the weaving and dyeing department, he saw the multitude of colourful silk paintings. Refreshing his memories of the scenes/landscapes he had seen.. “重逢你we meet again” The sight of the silk paintings staring back at him was so beautiful and impressive that the memories would last three lifetimes. [ 你给的眼神如玉 惊鸿一现留心底 敛墨三生]Metaphorically this could also be a reference to the lasting colours of “丹青DanQing” silk paintings. [只为画出你 画那迎冈舒展的你 给我讲大唐的秘密] Only because of painting you (these landscapes) the young artist learned about the essence of nature, the true meaning of life and the environment and the historical development of Majestic China. [不过信手却拈来朝夕] But if you were already a skilled painter, you would be able to express/paint more freely, like more choices of scenes. [画那乘马信步的你 轻弹西域笙歌一曲] Paintings of riding on horses, strumming a western melody etc reflected also the prosperity and the nobility of lifestyle of the era. Western influences arising generally from Tibet & countries on the Silk Road path showed the expanse of the Dynasty. [我愿将你画绢上. 记心间] Even the wish to paint you, “the landscape” could be just a remembrance in my heart. (the novice’s reservations if he could even make it to the “丹青DanQing” painter’s status.) [不过擦肩却魂萦梦系 我吟诗对句 素绢藏我真心如许 画为心印 誓言千丝万缕] The song ended with the young artist resolution/vow to continue to paint whether in reality or as a dream; to continue to excel in painting and poetry. Even on plain silk, my promises/intention would still be there. They were all imprinted in my heart. The novice artist showed the scroll of plain blank silk he was holding. He emphasized that “In this life, I could only do on silk to retain you” [此生我只能在绢上, 留住你] In the”唐朝Tang Dynasty” period 618 to 906 A.D, painting on silk was the only more superior mode of storage and preservation of the beauty of the magnificent landscape of China. The Silk Road really set possibilities for trading partners in Mid East and Europe to exchange ideas and technologies, and more importantly to embrace other culture. This concept has been brought to this date by China as “one belt one road” initiative, which really is a friendly tender offer to the countries for common prosperity. Look back in Tang Dynasty, Silk Road didn’t make Tang aggressively exploit the resources or valuables of other trading partners, but aim for a peaceful cooperative fair trading. This cultural context obviously is not well construed by western countries. Silk is expensive material for making a clothing but is also a symbol to embrace friendly and fair trading.
