(Originally written 2020 April) An even better Final Game than first thought. Idesawa simply played better for the last 5 points. Her mental is really good. For Akae, there are actually 2 opportunities for a counter-block, or a little counter-topspin with the forehand at 10-7 and 10-8, even for the little net touch. However, this requires a very high tactical and mental level for this, for the prediction, preparation, and bravery to execute the counter-forehand decisively. A few more years maybe. 10-9 and 10-10, a series of really good rescues. Usually, crucial points situation like this, especially when you're leading, you need to put the pressure on the opponent by getting on the initiative early. Akae tried, but Idesawa is just better. As mentioned somewhere else, it's strongly recommended for Akae to switch to a racket with thin outer-layer carbon with a thick powerful core layer. Something similar to Carbonado series or Acoustic Carbon, or something yet to be developed. It's the thick _ayous_ layer that's the main difference. Eventually, when she's ready to take this leap.

Akae Kaho, Idesawa Kyoka, Ojio Yuna (First written on 2019 November) ================================ Akae Kaho A potential gold challenger in the future, only held back by her relatively late development and opportunities compared to other players of similar age. Happy for her participation with the World Cadet Challenge. It's not a tournament to win, but it's a nice experience. It's the Indonesian Open that would be more interesting. ================================ Idesawa Kyoka Still unknown if she can be a potential gold challenger, but the fact that she's not being ruled out, is a statement of her potential. For her to compete in the highest levels, 2 details are absolutely critical. Heaviest of spin (Spin Energy), and a reliable and lethal point winner (forehand attack). Back in the speed glue era, it is impossible for a playstyle like Idesawa's to make it to the top. Absolutely impossible. Due to the sheer amount of Spin Energy that's being produced at that level, pimples can never control it reliably. Even though the difficulty has reduced in the post speed glue celluloid era, other factors still made it incredibly difficult for the pimples player at the top level. Now, in the 40+ era, many of these difficulties have further reduced. But it still remains unknown if the pimples rubber can compete at the top level. Ito Mima is an exception. She should not be considered as proof that pimples can compete at this level. For Idesawa to compete at the top level eventually, she must be able to resist and control such heavy spin coming from her opponents. Her mastery of her pimples (both pimples) is quite incredible, so this remains a possibility. It will depend a lot on the quality of her training and sparring partners. Her sparring partners must eventually start using sticky rubbers, maybe in a few years time. Next is a reliable point winner, usually the forehand attack. At the top level, it's less likely for her pimples mastery to win the points. While resisting these pimples variations, top opponents will return more of the light and float types of balls. This is where Idesawa must have a reliable, and lethal forehand attack for a point winner. Reliability is key, if the percentage is not good enough, then it's basically gifting points for the opponents. For this, footwork (including physical condition) is absolutely critical. The forehand attacking strokes must begin from the legs, any power must come from the legs, the arm is mainly for precision control and placement. This will need a lot of work with multiballs. At the moment, Idesawa's physical condition looks ok, her core looks stable, but sometimes both her legs do tend to lift off the ground when smashing, the accuracy is not reliable. This happens because her power exerted starts from her core. Once she corrects her technic for the power to start from her legs, this wouldn't happen. If necessary, Idesawa should lower her Center of Gravity for a firm contact with the ground, with the forehand stroke becoming slightly of an overhand swing (as compared to underhand or sidehand). ================================ Ojio Yuna This is one special talent. The first time I spotted her potential was 3 years ago, at the Bambi Finals. Been looking for her videos ever since, loads of matches from this year to catch up. Even at her age, her athletic qualities are incredible. Even more so, her mental qualities are incredible. Her decision making, shot selection, self-awareness, creativity, even audacity (in a good way) to try out different things when in a difficult situation. There's that match when she used her left hand to serve, to try to change something, that's crazy (in a good way). The last time I'm just as excited for a player at a similar age, is 8 years ago. Unfortunately, the most attention grabbing things about Yuna, are also the things which would restrict her progress in the long run. Her hybrid super-attacking and defensive style, and her unique grip. The first time I saw her play defensive was early this year. Initially, I was extremely excited for her genius intuition and creativity, to be able to play both super-attacking style and a defensive style together. But fairly quickly, I realised that this can't work. On a deep, instinctive level, the required intincts for the 2 styles are very different. Instincts for the tempo, timing, and the full body strokes in terms of power exertion and control. Too different. Instincts like these go deep, deep inside the human brain, I don't think it's somewhere along the cerebral cortex. Even for today's top players, a super-attacking player has problems when the tempo slows down, a defensive player's attacking tempo is generally similar to their defensive tempo. I don't think it's possible for the two to be balanced without one interfering the other. The racket is another major limitation. To accomodate the defensive style, a defensive racket is used. But this severely limited her attacking effectiveness. Ever since I saw her grip 3 years ago, I'd been wondering if it can possibly work at the highest level. Having analysed it from all kinds of perspectives technically (Kinetics Kinematics Biomechanics) with the limited videos I can find, I'm afraid the answer is that it cannot survive at the top level. No chance. Every measureable quality is poorer, speed is slower, spin is lower, power is lower, touch control is less sensitive, geometry is very limited. Without going into the complicated details, the key factors are her "moment arm" and the lack of an additional fulcrum at and around the handle (degree of freedom). There are likely more which I'd not found. Yuna's current attacking power comes only from her footwork, her athleticism. Her grip and defensive racket are actually severely lowering her effectiveness. Therefore, in order to compete at the highest level in the future, Yuna has to settle on her style, and change her grip. Considering her physical and mental qualities, Yuna is much more suitable for the attacking style. Pimples mainly on the forehand, switching to the backhand is acceptable under some situations. Equipment has to be an offensive setup. With no disrespect to Victas, Nittaku's equipment looks more suitable. SP preferably black, with an offensive racket like Acoustic, eventually progressing to Acoustic Carbon. Goriki may also be possible, even though it seems to be more suitable for defence. For her grip, shakehands is a safer choice. I do not think penhold is suitable for Yuna. When switching quickly between forehand and backhand, penhold is much slower than shakehands. This is one aspect that's very commonly played in the women's game. But even if Yuna wishes to experiment with penhold grip, she should still use a shakehands racket. Due to the length of handle, the weight balance is easier for a female child's fingers and wrist to cope with the muscular demands. Shakehands is still a safer choice. Obviously, considering the amount of time she'd been playing with her unique grip, there will be difficulties in changing grip. But it has to be done, in order to reach the highest level in the long run. Remaining with her unique grip, or penhold grip, can continue to bring some success at the youth level, but is honestly impossible at the highest level. She will also need an extremely intelligent technical coach for her development, someone on a similar level as Matsuzaki Taisuke. With regret, this actually means that there are very few around who is capable of fulfilling her potential. As for a role model, Ito Mima is the most obvious player to learn from, while Mattias Falck is suitable too. ================================== These are the 3 players whom I am interested in following their progress. There are other gold challengers not mentioned here (eg Nagasaki Miyu), since she'd already been established as one potentially, even though her development had stalled for some time.
