I felt bad for her in the end. They abandon their life to never exit the palace and once the Emperor forgets about what else they are supposed to do but to dedicate themselves to arts, reading, signing and playing instruments. Not allowing them to keep something so dear to their heart is heartless knowing that at some point they will be forgotten and substituted by a younger woman. Seriously she just wanted to keep one dress. No wonder she became a villain.

Gao was a villain even when she got everything she wanted. But she had layers. You do bring up a great point about the consorts needing to entertain themselves while basically being imprisoned in the Forbidden City. Her singing opera and dressing up wasn't the problem. Didn't she try to use a play to help spread the rumor that the Empress and Consort Chun were lovers? She even used her hobby to hurt people. Other than the Emperor, she was never shown being nice to anyone for too long.

It was more than a theory. In the longer draft of this story which were eventually cut cos of the 70 episode constraint, apparently many of Gao's cloths being burnt here were created or worked on by Yingluo's late sister. Gao knew the sister well cos she apparently was her favourite seamstress and treated her very kindly, even coming to her aid when the sister was raped. By the burning of these cloths, not only was something dear to Gao's heart being burnt, it also destroyed the last remaining traces of Yingluo's sister's work. Shame that backstory featuring Gao and WYL's sister was cut out and never filmed.

Because most of the hair they used for the elaborate styles is fake. Even back then. There's fabric covered pillows that they place and wrap the hair over it, to give the illusion of having more hair, hence why they also wear those hairpins as well, to lock it in place. I've watched someone put their hair up in one of the traditional court styles and it's fascinating.
