At least here in Yanxi Palace the emperor was portrayed more like a human being and less like a beast. He had defects and qualities like all human beings. Sure he was cruel, ruthless, calculating, suspicious by nature, very temperamental but at least he had facets that were normal, he was showed as a father that cared for his children in his own way and was still able to love at least one woman in his own way. In Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace the emperor was portrayed as a disgusting bing, cruel, lustful, like a beast in all ways. He didn't have any redeeming qualities. It was definitely hard to tolerate and see such a character on screen. I couldn't even understand why some of his women loved him.

plus Yanxi's interpretation of all those Qianlong anecdotes (like the real and fake Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains. gifting his concubines his calligraphies) were more "natural" and "character like" while Ruyi's team gave me this impression of referencing for the referencing sake. like most of the time bringing in those anecdotes didn't say much about the emperors personality even make his character feel kinda random and confusing (like the calligraphy one).

I feel so sorry for Chenbi - she had the most miserable life - I don't know if they elaborated on this one as they do in ?Ruyi I think - but there they say either her child was killed as she left or they threatened to kill her child if she ever mentions the duplicity in not sending an unmarried virgin to the palace.
