That was a Kanto plate on the pole. My rule is that if you see that, and are getting Kyushu vibes, you are on one of the Izu Islands. For Ogasawara Islands you still have Kanto Plates, but the foliage is unlike anything in the rest of Japan, it is very tropical but the plants look different from Kyushu and Okinawa
