The location of this mosque is at the foot of the Sila hill in the city of Medina. The distance is not far from the Nabawi Mosque, approximately 2.5 km away, more precisely on Jalan Abu Bakar Siddiq. Originally there were 7 mosques built in this place, therefore it was called the 7th mosque (sab'ah). But now for expansion in the city area, 2 mosques were evicted by the local government, now there are 5 mosques left. Therefore it is named the Khamsah Mosque, in Arabic meaning five. There are also those who call it the Khandaq Mosque.
The mosque and also the Khandaq fort are one of the historical relics of Rasullalah PBUH in the city of Medina. In Arabic khandaq means trench. At that time, trenches were being dug on the idea of the Prophet's friend, Salman Farisy, to create a defensive fortress to ward off attacks from the Quraish infidels who were going to attack Medina. This incident occurred in the month of Shawwal 5 Hijriah
In carrying out the construction of the ditch, Rasullalah SAW helped. Every 10 Muslims are even required to be able to dig a 40 meter long trench. In an Islamic history book, it is stated that the Muslims were able to dig a trench 5,554 m long and 4.62 m wide, with a trench depth of 3,234 m. There are opinions from historians who say it was completed within 10 days, while others say the digging of the ditch was completed within 6 days.
According to Islamic historians, the ditch was dug from the north to the south of the city of Medina, but the ditch in the southern part is no longer there and next to it is the Fatah Mosque.
The time for war arrived. Where an army of infidels invaded from the city of Mecca as many as 10 thousand people. They did not expect to fight this stronghold of the Muslims. Rasullalah's troops were immediately ready to fortify the city of Medina. Then Rasullalah SAW brought his troops to Mount Silih/Saia
In the Khandaq war, the infidels could not penetrate the ditch built by the Muslims. When they faced each other, they could only fight openly, unable to fight as usual. Abu Sofyan's troops felt like they were biting their fingers because they couldn't get through the trench. This trench warfare (khandaq) strategy itself is a new model of warfare strategy in the Arabian Peninsula.
