Zilla vs. Gorosaurus - Godzilla Fan Project Animation

A couple of things to disclose about this video.
It was originally created at the request of Chris Cuypers aka GojiFan1993 for the 2nd season of his collaborative project, "Kaiju Fantasy Battles! Reignited", set to release in mid 2019. Unfortunately, the project had to be cancelled due to unforeseen events taking place in Chris' personal life. Since I have already finished the animation by that point, he was thankfully gracious enough to let me share it on my KZbin account, as a way of giving something for his fans. I give credit to Chris for conceptualizing this idea, and even if it did not come to full fruition, he hopes you'll at least enjoy this animation.
I decided to wait until August 27 before publishing the video. That date marked the release of the 1998 American Godzilla movie in my country, which makes this an appropriate nod to the film's 20th anniversary. (I know KZbin says it was uploaded on the 26th, but it's already the 27th here, so whatever.) There's a couple references to other Godzilla movies too, see if you can recognize them.
The animation was created under fairly loose guidelines, hence why the two monsters are scaled to be approximately equal in size, rather than adhering to any official size stats given by Toho or Sony-TriStar (which were never consistent anyway). It's all meant to be fun, so don't be too nitpicky about such details. I tried to keep this one more serious than most of the related videos I upload, but there's still a few comedic touches.
It took about 6 months and an uncountable number of renders and re-renders to complete this thing. Unavoidably, there are some minor mistakes I didn't have time or patience to fix -- some buildings and trees disappear between shots, and there are a few oddities in the rendering and the physics I couldn't do anything about.

Coming back to this video now that I'm older and not a stupid kid anymore, I think it's interesting how at the start of the video Zilla tries to escape the conflict at first and only started to properly fight back when he realized he probably wouldn't be able to escape without defending himself, which makes me wonder if Gorosaurus was trying to hunt him but ends up biting off more than he could chew or if it was a territorial dispute. I think the hate around Zilla is pretty justified considering how he started out but I really think he works great as a separate character from Godzilla. Not as strong physically but much faster and more agile, impressive tunneling capabilities, incredibly intelligent and a situational power breath that he has to use carefully. It's unlikely but I would love to see what Legendary's take on Zilla would be if he ever made it into the Monsterverse Plus the whole cloaca thing, as goofy as it was when Zilla first debuted, does make him feel more like an animal than just a monster, which I really like Plus plus forget what I said 5 years ago about the art styles not blending well together, that's really not an issue, and the animations still holds up really well

I think monsterverse should do what Showa Era Toho did and make a solo movie based on each monster, As for Zilla, while I agree his character wasn't the best of the Godzillas. It certainly wasn't the worst (Hanna Barbara, wtf was that roar) I think a solo movie set waaaaaay in the past about Godzilla ruling a small tribe of Zillas, effectively becoming a God of the Zillas. And the plot would essentially be a rogue zilla that was kicked out become stronger and stronger until, in a fight with Godzilla, he manages to gain the respect of Godzilla. Still losing of course, godzilla IS the king after all.

Vrahno I rewatch this video all the time and I am still noticing things, your ability to not only model, choreograph and animate these all by yourself boggles my mind. Not just that but the way you effectively capture the personality, movement and “””soul””” of the monster’s every single time is so spooky it’s insane. I love how you can t e l l the moment that Zilla decides to start fighting back instead of running because he is either smart enough to realize that getting into a fight with Gorosaurus because he upset him isn’t worth the time, energy or injuries OR because Gorosaurus is just trying to eat him or some shit idfk but Goro is coming at him so hard right off the bat that he has no opportunity to flee and has to begin retaliating. Every video of yours is phenomenal and I wish you the absolute best of luck with your future projects, not that you’ll need it.

Many thanks for the supportive words! I always wish I could have refined this video a little more, as it was subjected to a lot of corner-cutting and I now see more of the faults in the animation, but regardless, it's really comforting that the basic ideas I've put into the characterizations and the choreography are still evident. Back when GojiFan asked me to make this, I took it as a chance to show off some monster personalities and fighting tactics (mainly the way they can use their environment) rather than just making it a straightforward fight that Gorosaurus probably would have won otherwise. I also wonder if anyone ever caught onto the small nod to Destroy All Monsters, when Zilla tries to leap on Goro in an arched motion for a finishing move but Goro notices the sound and wrecks Zilla's "arch of triumph".

Honestly I think the backlash for the '98 Tristar Godzilla film was overblown. Zilla is a pretty good monster design, in my view. And the movie was actually a pretty serviceable monster flick. Of course, the main issue was that, for a Godzilla film, it just wasn't really Godzilla, which was the main source of disappointment for a lot of people. In more recent years, I've come to see Zilla in a more favorable light and, if they hadn't tried to attach the Godzilla name to the movie, I think it would have done a lot better.

This right here is the gold standard for any animated Kaiju fight on KZbin. The little details like how different Gorosaurus and Zilla were in their fighting methods, how Zilla was more agile and danced around Goro made it even better. Zilla using his smarts, tricking Gorosaurus with that piece of his dorsal spikes was fucking gold. Also kudos to actually leaving the scars inflicted on each Kaiju in every shot. This video is exactly how I expect to see these two particular monsters face off. If this is your first video, we are in for a RIDE. Can't wait for your next Kaiju video and good luck! 10/10.

Not only that, but they have different personalities and the story goes even further away from screen, it seemed Zilla was trying to run away from Goro because of that gash on his side. What made Gorosaurus attack such a threat? Dominion? Desperation? Fearlessness? The knowledge of the unknown? Who knows, that makes this fight so much more entertaining, it can be told in a hundred different perspectives just in an instant, every single person watching this vid will come to see a different point of view on this fight with theories and thoughts as to why they are fighting and why they act the way they are acting. I may be sounding a bit draconian here in my sayings about it and may be pulling off more than this video can actually chew, but I see humongous potential, and like you said, if this was just one of their first vids, there WILL be something special, that is for certain.

People are always badmouthing Zilla but in the right hands, Zilla can be a really cool monster. sure, Zilla isn't as durable as other Godzillas, but he made good use of his speed and agility, and he was a fast learner. you can see all this in the animated TV series that came after the 1998 movie. he was the Raptor of Kaiju. when he couldn't win in a head on fight, he used strategy and hit&run, and even made use of the environment to set up traps. this comment can go ahead and get thumbs down, but I still think Zilla is a cool Kaiju. over the decades we've seen a large diversity of Kaiju. from alien cyborg chickens, to 3 headed dragons, to giant flying turtles, to a gorilla that chases after women. it is really so bad to see a Kaiju that chooses to outsmart its enemies over out muscling them? if you think about it, there is no such thing as a bad Kaiju, only bad management of one

Zilla can't be a subspecies of Godzilla, his body plan is radically different from Godzilla. The difference between two subspecies would be very minuscule (different coloration or size differentiation but has the same body build), the difference between species would have some differences (compare Lions, Leopards, Jaguars, and Tigers) since they would have slightly different body builds and skin patterns. Differences between two different Genus is when things get more interesting (compare Humans, Chimpanzees, Gorillas, Orangutan, and Gibbons or Wolves(including dogs) with Foxes). If Monsterverse Zilla is closely related to Monsterverse Godzilla and share the same family, then they would be two different genus of Godzillasaurids. Although I more in favor that Zilla's linage broke away earlier, so instead of being a godzillasaurid (clade family) like Godzilla, it would be more of a godzillasauroid (clade super family). The reason I say this is because the 1998 origin for Zilla wouldn't really work. Zilla is a mutated iguana that survived a nuclear bomb test and grew into a giant with a spikey back. but if you think about it, what are the odds of that happening again in the Monsterverse? it would be like taking a small dog such as a pug, giving it radiation, and it grew into a wolf. the Monsterverse aims to make monsters more realistic without straying too far from the original source material, but keeping Zilla's original origin story seems like a leap. that's why I think it would be better for Zilla and Godzilla to be related and they broke away during the dawn of life on Earth. Godzilla's family favored brute force while Zilla's family went in the direction of speed and agility. Zilla still can't take the punishment Godzilla can, but makes up for it by running circles around his enemies and attacking from the rear. I also would like to see them keep the green Atomic Breath from the animated TV series, but that's just my opinion

Love the scars on zilla’s side that you see at the very beginning when he first bursts out from underneath the surface. Implies that there was already a confrontation going on before we got to this point, and zilla was trying to escape Goro. Very interesting.

Say what you want about Zilla, he’s still badass enough to earn himself a spot as a teammate to Godzilla like Anguirus. Maybe not as strong as Anguirus (though in the comics he has shown to hold his own against the Big-G himself) and is still a really cool monster. I mean, barring the fact that he is supposed to be a Godzilla but isn’t, his design is still cool, looking like a real dinosaur, he’s still quite strong (despite how easy it was to kill him in the movie), and is incredibly cunning. We could just say he’s a weaker but a tad smarter, and lighter and faster subspecies of Godzilla or a branch in the Gojiradae if we want though. Also, yes, I am calling the family that, I’m aware it’s stupid and I’m a nerd, I’m aware that’s a stretch, just let me have this! What matters is that they’re both nuclear mutants that look vaguely like theropod dinosaurs.

I like to think each batch of eggs zilla has either one or the whole brood is stronger. I think this mainly due to zilla Jr (but I hate the fact that zilla Jr is nerfed in the way he needs a partner to lay ONE egg. Zilla had a huge advantage in numbers but the zilla Jr doesn't have that advantage.) I have not seen the majority of the animated series so there is probably an explanation and I get why they would do it from a story perspective. But I don't like it either way if zilla ever return in movies or TV shows zilla needs that ability. The numbers also makes sense with what yall said about intelligence speed etc. I love zilla and in a game if I had to choose between live action godzillas it would be a hard choice between zilla and shin. People underestimate zilla just because they hate him.

Vrahno, you are just too damn good at this. ThIs has easily got to be the best 3D animated fan-made kaiju battle I've ever seen. Such sleek choreography, beautifully clean animation, and so much personality given to both monsters. It really brought out a type of ferociousness and animalistic nature to both Gorosaurus and Zilla that I've never really seen before with any sort of kaiju battle like this. Surprisingly enough, Zilla is quite unique among kaijus when not trying to imitate the Big G. Specially during her moments of brilliance, like using her environment to her advantage. She did the same in her movie, hiding and learning through her encounters with the military.
