Zimbabwe outlaws use of US dollar and other foreign currencies

Zimbabwe's government is banning the use of foreign currencies when buying goods - as it moves towards reintroducing the Zimbabwean dollar.
The local dollar was phased out more than a decade ago, after it lead to hyperinflation.
But the president says it's an important step in repairing the economy.
Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reports from Harare.

This is the right decision made, by Zimbabwe. And the public should back it fully. Anyone saying differently should be ignored. I production is a problem due to purchasing power, because of foreign currency. Then produce in country the commodities, resources, and tech. Use the greatest resource of any country. The actual people! Money has never been the driver of anything. It has been and always will be the mental and physical applications of people that make and build everything. Put legs and arms on a currency and order it to build or make something. The result will be nothing. Invest in education and drive up the skill levels for trade skills. That is what will make a community that is a COUNTRY.

Governments can decree or ban any currency, but ultimately, it is the producers and consumers who decide what currency to use. When there is loss of confidence in governments, their mandated currency follows, along with inflation. This is a natural event.

That sounds like a bad idea. They're banning all forms of currency, including Rand, dollar, and yuan. There's nothing wrong with having your own currency but your own currency needs to have something to back it up. What would the Zimbabwean money be backed by? Even after the decide to introduce the new currency, what would it prevent inflation in global trade? In term of supply and demand, for something to have values, it needs to be desirable in the world market. You can't make a new currency and hope for the best. They need a lot of fixing within the country economy to bring value to its own currency. The money wouldn't be desirable if it's being perceived as a risk in term of trading. If you're being objective and a foreigner, what would exactly be the reason for you to exchange your currency for Zimbabwean money? I don't think it will work but we'll see. At the end of the day, it seems like it would just push for an informal market where people would still use foreign currency. Unless they could fix the economy, the inflation will happen like crazy.
