I adore Mbira music, and have been listening to it for many years. This is the first time I have really been able to SEE how it's created. Thank you so much. A real blessing!

Wow! I have been waiting for this since childhood. It's high time that the mbira is used or the sake of it being an amazing polyphonic instrument capable of playing solo music, and not just to accompany singing and dancing. (Yes, I know many of you will want to chastise me for saying that). Like the kora, and the classical guitar which were also "accompaniment" instruments before but have now gone on to express the most amazing solo music, the mbira deserves the chance to do the same. WE OWE IT TO THE MBIRA!!! The traditional repertoire and style will always survive because it is a sacred tradition. Now, we also need to establish the "mbira or the sake of it's own art" tradition. This is the one instrument with the highest developed tradition of cross and polyrhythmic music, and it needs to be taken further. Having said that, I want to again state that I appreciate and love the approach of geniuses such as Garikayi.

I had a smaller version in USA size of cigar box using same principle of Mbira, it was simply called " African finger piano..any one know of these or was it a serious instrument or a small toy
@ZimbabweMbira3 жыл бұрын
There are many serious instruments as well as toys. The proof is in making the music!
@blessingmasawi3616 Жыл бұрын
Depends, "kalimba" is a serious instrument, likely derived from mbira
@ZimbabweMbira6 ай бұрын
Or the other way; the big Mbira evolved from smaller versions - perhaps the Karimba
