I do believe this is a very good performance, but perhaps "greatest" is pushing it. The point of Chopin is that it should be different for everyone, with the rubato he used in his pieces. There is no one perfect way to play one of Chopin's pieces.

I had heard piano players say the name of this piece so many times that one day I decided that I to play this video. From the first time I saw it, I loved it. I used to listen to this almost constantly, and it quickly became my favorite music. Every night, I'd sit down at my desk to write, at my couch to relax, and even at my dining table, and I would put this video on to listen to. Eventually, my education became too much and I forget about it completely. I listened to this tonight for the first time in a long time. I had always thought people were being overdramatic when they said that a song made them cry, but I can honestly say that for the first time in my life, after remembering how everything was when I listened to this, a piece of music gave me tears. Thank you for the video!

What a spectacular performance. I am always deeply moved by Zimerman's tone, expression, and technique. His style is so "crisp", by which I mean that every note is audible and precise. Nothing is hidden. I think Chopin himself would applaud Zimerman.
@syourke38 жыл бұрын
+Marc Payne Pianists do not have tone - pianos have tone. It is a very beautiful instrument. As for expression and technique, Zimmerman has that in spades - he is a superb musician.
@jakesellman82468 жыл бұрын
+Steven Yourke Pianists do have tone. A piano will sound very different depending on how you play it and I do agree, Zimmerman is quite the master.
@richpersoff40808 жыл бұрын
+Steven Yourke Mr. Zimerman brings ( or brought, certainly) his own piano actions, which he himself tunes and whose action he adjusts note by note before a concert, according to what he will be playing. So I would give him credit for "tone", in addition to his masterful playing..
@mdg1406 жыл бұрын
That is a very good way of describing the performance. It's challenging, though always a pleasure to see a combination of technique (playing each note clearly in rhythm, etc.) and expression (using rubato and changes in dynamics to bring out an emotive effect).
@dennisdougherty75385 жыл бұрын
@@syourke3 Sorry Steven, but if you take two pianists on this instrument they will SOUND different. The biggest help for their tone and expression is to NOT tune Equal Temperament but with a "genuine" tuning and at a better concert pitch like C128Hz. This is one reason why Arsentiy Kharitonoff's "Russian Triptych" CD helped to raise him above all other pianists.

Yes, I dare to say that this performance of the b flat minor scherzo is the most satisfying for me out of all the other ones I have found and heard. Zimmerman has real character and a strong backbone in his spirit. Real self-restraint and control to bring out this remarkable form and structure of Chopin. In addition to the structural visualization and understanding the player needs here to portrait a sense of a lived life, a real person living through this piece. Here is the difficulty, it is a master-form but at the same time it is a story with human emotions and happenings. But Zimmermann can do both. Compare with other pianists, they always distort the pulse and Zimmermann does not distort it. And in order to manage this he has to have real piano technique. For the sense of the lived life he has the tone to sing it out. This piece always reminds me that my strong opinion is that Chopin as well as Schubert, were much greater musical architects than Beethoven, out of whom people for obvious reasons have made such a big number. Zimmermanns technique and unyielding strict even pulse is remarkable and gives honour especially to the 2nd Ballade and the 4th Ballade played by him is the very best I have heard. The 4th ballade by Chopin is also a master-form together with a master-story and fantasy, such a combination of different kinds of demands that no human could ever play it here in this kind of a body and circumstances we have now. This is my opinion.

It is unbelievable : how the life.. the journey can be transcribed into a music piece... magical.. above and beyond talent.. yet it takes a genius to read and deliver it. I am in tears and joy/suffering enigma as of listening to this.. Loved Chopin for years.. never have been so enormously shook up.. immersed in the very deep sense/ meaning of a piece.. different reality/universe.. and I'm not even high at all!:)

How long I've been looking for this masterpiece, and to find this interpretation as well. Love his Ballades, but I love this equally much :O

Every time I hear him I think thats how this is supposed to be played. No extreme tempi beautiful phrasing. Hard to think of anybody who can capture Chopin like this other than perhaps Rubenstein.
