Thanks for your comment. Some video's are more important than others and we felt that this subject of cleaning and preparing zinc was important.

This was so informative I always thought you had to get it bent by a bending machine Thank you Patricia

Sometimes I look at bending machines ina catalog and wonder if we ought to get one.

For the zinc edge, I gave up on patina and just use a black gloss enamel. Takes a little care to apply it, but, to me, it is easier to get a terrific looking, even product.

I do the same thing now. My zinc patina always comes out splotchy. The black enamel gloss works great.

Great Idea, a technique that will give great results.

I don't blame you, enamel gives great results.

What a stunning window! Truly beautiful! Could this piece go outside? Would you need to do something to it to protect from the elements? Again, truly beautiful!!

This one hangs in the clients house behind existing windows so no worries!

Jeanne had so much fun with that design that she has redigned it and hopes to get it in a new show.

What kind of green glass is that? Also, do you worry--or have ever fractured a piece when pounding with that hammer?
@GommStainedGlass3 жыл бұрын
We used some OGT green and some Bullseye green and there may have been some Wismach green. We've really pounded on the zinc and never broken the glass because the forch is spread out along the surface of the glass.

First off, the panel is dynamic & multi faceted. This is an important lesson. Is there a difference between Novocan Zinc or solder patina? Will you patina the solder? Excellent presentation today & great job, you two. Plus I love the clients reaction.
@GommStainedGlass3 жыл бұрын
That patina we used is the same thing we used on the solder. We don't find the formula for zinc is much different. The other bottle Jeanne held up is "JAX" and it's a much more powerful flux, but it's harder to come by. We didn't put flux on the rest of the window because it had already been done.

The round yellow pieces with bees inside are awesome! Is there a place we can order them? That piece is absolutely gorgeous! I love everything about it! Is that a design you created? The initials on the tree were genius!

A friend who owns an antique store provided them and we're not sure where they can be found. Lets us know if you find a source

At the end, did you solder the joints of the zinc, both corners and where the two pieces came together on the arch? Did you solder the inside and outside joints? Doesn't look like you soldered both sides at every junction. Great piece and interesting to watch you try to bend that zinc.
@GommStainedGlass3 жыл бұрын
I did. I soldered the ends and the joint, and every lead line that met on the outside edge, both sides. It was very strong when complete.

A came bender would have been much easier. Great job though. Beautiful panel.
@GommStainedGlass3 жыл бұрын
It's true that came benders are good for a tighter radius, this large radius is actually easier if done by hand.
@snowballs19783 жыл бұрын
Do you use lead came or mostly foil method?
@GommStainedGlass3 жыл бұрын
In our studio, we only use zinc and copper foil. We don't care for lead. It's just not strong enough. 😀😀😀

Hello guys! Might sound like a basic question, but how do you decide what width zinc to use on a finished project? Is it based off strength or aesthetics? I would have maybe chosen 1/2" for strength on a window this size....but I can see the 1/4" is definitely easier to work with for "hand-bending"....i really don't know, that's why I'm inquiring. Beautiful job on the window! Love these colors, especially the bee rondels...did you make those?
@GommStainedGlass3 жыл бұрын
We couldn't bend 1/2" zinc around that curve. 1/4" is an outer bar so there is an inner shape and an outer shape..just like 1/2". This panel will hang in an opening from 5 chains so that it will be centered in the arched opening. We had a friend who found the bee units for us and we plan to use them in another project.
