I wouldn't say so, there are many situations in which she would be indispensable, but the writers didn't make use of her. Imagine what would happen if her character was on the bridge of the Enterprise during Kirk's first encounter with The Reliant and Khan. She probably would have seen through that pretty quickly. Or imagine her in the situation Earth found itself in when they first encounter the Minbari in Babylon 5. Not the same universe, but a situation involving the introduction of a new race and customs that may be misinterpreted would be right up her alley. They don't give her a lot of use, but most of that is due to poor writing.

@@Grahf0 no, even if she was powerful, she is useless as she is never necessary. Perhaps they would have gotten more done in a day and had slightly more supplies onboard, a spare red jacket for example. Powerful doesn't mean useful if you never find a use for it.
@Grahf04 жыл бұрын
@@mandowarrior123 But you are (somewhat) echoing what I just said. In a setting where you were dealing with impostors or aliens you have no prior dealings with, there is no reason why she would not be necessary, as in the examples I gave. Those were never written in, so the writers gave her no use. The fact that situations like this, especially on an exploratory vessel, did not occur every so often, runs almost contrary to the genre and premise. Darmok, arguably one of the best episodes in the series, is a glaring example as to how she could have been better used from a writer's perspective but wasn't. The Dominion war, with the changelings is another one. Not to mention hoping the crew themselves, especially if they were trying to bottle up or hide what they were feeling and it was affecting work during their multi-year mission. From a military standpoint, she should be more useful than a chaplain (Warhammer 40k chaplains are another story). Everything that makes her "useless" is actually the writer's failure to capitalize on what is an ideal role to have in an interstellar exploratory situation.

The "Minuet" reference was, as Ian mentioned, a holodeck character, and was never a real person, Season 1 Episode 15 "11001001". At the end of the episode, Riker tried to recreate the simulation the Bynars had created for him, and was not able to get her back exactly the way she existed earlier in the episode.
@joffrecordan5 жыл бұрын
Minuet was a hologram from another episode who was made much more complex by alien interference, and Riker kinda fell in love with her. Ultimately, the situation was resolved, but Starfleet technology couldn't recreate the complex personality of the character without the alien help, so in effect she "died." In this episode, the Romulans have kidnapped Riker, and are running a simulation set in the future wherein he's lost his memory of like 20 years or something. The Simulation is running without all the information, and is constantly monitoring and scanning Riker's brain to pull images and create distractions when he gets suspicious. They pulled Minuet from Riker's memories as a reference to someone he found beautiful and had feelings for, someone he could have believed he had a long term relationship. The Romulan simulation didn't know she was a hologram, and as a hologram can't produce children, the selection of Minuet kinda gave away the game.

Answer with spoilers. . . . . The boy is an alien in (disguised as a human) who can read thoughts and memories, and also lives in a cave which functions like a holodeck. He is lonely and manages to kidnap Riker to be a companion. He holo-manifested a fake future Enterprise where he can create the illusion that time has passed and that Riker has amnesia. In an earlier episode, a race called the Binars (short alien guys who always paired up and finish each other's sentences) hijacked the Enterprise to download their planetary mainframe and reboot it. In order to keep Picard and Riker distracted, they created a holodeck character named Minuet. It was more realistic and had more character depth than anything Riker had seen before, and he was smitten. After the Binars' homeworld was saved, Minuet ceased to exist. When Riker tried to run the program again, the new Minuet lacked the same soul. Riker lamented that she effectively died. Back in the fake-future Enterprise, the boy picked up on Riker's genuine love and feelings of grief for "Min" (Minuet), somehow overlooking the fact that she was a holodeck creation, not a real person. Riker noticed this immediately, and the illusion fell apart. The Romulan was also a fake, created from Riker's memory, to try and extend the fantasy.
What was the moment that made him realise something was off?
@Mumblix4 жыл бұрын
