This is one of my favorite scenes in film history. Despite the family's trials and difficulties you get the sense that they're all going to be OK. No matter how difficult life gets we can still experience beauty.

The writer and director realized the film would be too dark if they did not offer a grain of hope, so they wrote this in as a conceit for the audience.

What a perfect ending- just the right mood and tempo. If this had been an American film, the audience would have burst into applause and the teary-eyed parents would have hugged their son and the family would have strolled out into the carpark in slow motion with a pretty sunset and falling autumn leaves. But life is not like that, there are no neat endings. You enjoy a special moment like this for what it is, it will not make all of a family's problems magically disappear but it is no less beautiful- a moment to make the drudgery of life bearable.

Your interpretation of this ending is interesting, Peter. You make a good point in your praise including the pacing and tone of this scene; as with cinema, mood and tempo are important (obviously) in music as well. If I may expand on your cultural take, I'd like to introduce some context beyond the immediate feel and aesthetic of this very powerful and extremely great scene. Yes, it may be so that in the US, culturally, speaking in very broad terms of course, that our first inclination is to jump to our feet in applause. So on its face what most audiences will see without having seen the movie in its entirety to grasp the value of such an ending. To fairly examine this scene in the larger context of the film, however, is crucial. First to address your point on the lack of applause: Kenji's not performing at a recital, this is this performance portion of the exam to get into music school. This is also the first and only time we hear Kenji perform in full. Second, up until these final 8 minutes, each Sasaki family member has been wrapped in their own personal crises. For this moment, though, they unite in the pride of their son. sorry for the novel this scene rules and I love it

So overcome with emotion they break protocol and approach their son after his performance. This movie is about a family that seemingly lost its identity, eventually coming together and hopefully making it beyond the crest. One of the director's absolute best.

It's amazing how some moving images on a screen can stir so many emotions inside you. No matter how many times I watch this scene I get totally filled with emotions. Being able to capture that exact moment on film is such an accomplishment, it cannot be compared.

I don't think it was a happy OR sad ending. I got the sense that the marriage is pretty much shot, but the couple settled into an arrangement by which they can support their son and encourage his development.

You're making globalizations. "I've found that japanese films don't need all those effects and one liners to make it interesting" Have you seen Godzilla, Super Sentai or Ultraman?. Those are here to tell you you're wrong. 20th century boy would be a different take on the japanese formula, it was a disappointment because it didn't, and it sucked balls. This movie is a serious exception, because it's not a big production. Just like American movies and hollywood movies are too different things
