Ever wonder how a variable pitch fan works? In this video, I show you a variable pitch fan I am having trouble with in a John Deere X9 combine. We will talk about diagnostics, repair, operation & tests. After extensive electrical and hydraulic tests, I determine the fan just needs replaced. It actually exploded and broke while taking it apart, forcing our hands to throw in the towel and just order a new one.

You can command a engine fan reverse cycle from the advance settings icon in the engine page on the gen 5 display FYI

As usual Zeth, there is always something to be learnt from your videos! Most notably this week, the manual got it wrong again! Cooling fan sensor voltage goes reverse to manual! Nice to know, even if I'll never use it, as retired 5 yrs ago, and gave up the trade way back in 80's! Thanks, I love learning new techniques and procedures, just because I'm curious! I just did the union seal PIP for one of these a few weeks ago. Little did i know that when removing the fan from the machine one of the bolts pulled some threads with it. Installed the PiP seal kit and when installing fan back into machine the second to last bolt installed wouldn't hold proper torque. We Put a new fan in under warranty. But Talk about a bummer! Still was cool to see how it works and to test it with the park brake tool to manually rotate the blades.

I forgot to mention that the biggest kicker is doing the work in a cold storage building in northern MN. Removing and installing the fan twice in a 10 degree pole barn was not fun.

Hi Zeth, your video's never fail to amaze, the amount of technology in the modern equipment is overwhelming, I once had a David Brown 990 clutch pressure plate come to bits like that while I was dismanteling to replace needle bearings, just missed my head by inches. keep up the good work

It makes me wonder just how many engineers it takes to create a John Deere machine. Computers, radios, heat and cooling, hydraulics, oil. water, fuel and def, tires, bearings, chains, pulleys, water and hydraulic hoses, electrical, remote controls, seats, camera mounts and a thousand other things. It's amazing that you guys can fix all of that.

Got 2 of those same head lamps. Only downside to them is if you’ve got your head in a tight spot or just close to whatever it is you’re working on it can turn itself on or off without you wanting it to. So be warned lol. Otherwise it’s great.
