Purely from a degree of difficulty standpoint, and just highlight-reel worthy goals this is, hands-down, the best. It was a big deal in LA too, where I live. However, it is hard to top Messi’s in terms of impact. Messi is still regarded as one of the best players in the world, is exponentially more popular worldwide than Zlatan (who I love), and had just come off winning the World Cup. The amount of eyes that were on that Inter Miami match dwarfed those watching the Galaxy debut, and Messi comes on and literally kicks a “buzzer beater” goal to win the game.

A bit of backstory: This was the first ever meeting between the LA Galaxy and LAFC. LAFC were formerly Chivas USA, which went bankrupt years prior, and those fans hated LA Galaxy. There was already a rivalry before the first game. Zlatan has arrived in LA 36 hours prior to kickoff, and got no training in with the team, so he didn’t get to start. By the 55th minute, LA Galaxy were down 3-0 and it was looking like a blowout game. LA Galaxy managed to pull back a goal by the 65th minute, and Zlatan was subbed on in the 71st minute. Just minutes after he came on, Galaxy scored. And then in the 76th minute, this happens. Obviously chaos for Galaxy supporters in a sold out game. Game goes on and Zlatan heads home the winner in the 91st minute, to complete a 4 goal comeback and win the first game in this rivalry for the Galaxy. Even though this game is just an MLS game it often gets overlooked 👀

Zlatan goes to the US, partly as an ambassador of football. He is on the bench, everybody is getting hyped, but he hasn't practiced with the team. However, Galaxy is down a couple of goals and finally, towards the end of the game, like everyone wishes, Zlatan gets the opportunity to make an impact. Almost with his first touch he lives up to the hype and the hope that he will shine. Everyone is taken by surprise. The goalkeeper kicks it long, but a long header enables a sudden counterattack. The ball bounces past one defender and the others are not prepared for the second bounce. They are not even thinking about taking the ball or blocking a shot. The ball is too far out from the goal to worry yet and they need time to adapt to the situation, but Zlatan's mind works at a different speed, he is already by the ball, in a stance to shoot it and, unlike what most in the audience or on the field are used to, he knows he has the power to score from there and the goalkeeper is not in position. He bends the ball in a smooth curve, makes it look easy, making it seem like the field and the other players are much smaller than usual. The audience goes crazy at Zlatan scoring, living up to the hype, almost with his first touch, towards the end of the game, subconsciously realizing this goal was one size bigger than normal. Not faster, not more tactical, just smooth, simple and bigger. And that's the beauty of it, like an obviously taller person, everyone could immediately see it and intuitively sense that their world of possibilities had just expanded. A small step for Zlatan, but a big leap for American soccer.

Wonderful analysis. I love watching this goal, because it is simple yet powerful and precise. That is the beauty of it. It takes much calculation, much foot eye coordination to do this. It takes everyone by surprise because Ibra is so unpredictable.
