I had a college professor named H. Craig Collins at St. John's University in the early 1980's, WW II vet and retired NYPD. He was a sergeant in the NYPD and from 1970-1973 was head of the city's gang unit, reporting directly to the mayor of NY. He wrote a book about the gangs of that time period in NYC, especially the Bronx. They all wore vests - "colors"- to identify themselves. I like how much the intro showing main 9 members of the Warriors kinda captures their characters that would be expanded upon later in the game. Cleon and Swan are the no-nonsense leaders, Ajax being the crass "one track mind" muscle, Rembrandt being the artist, Snow being as cool as his nickname gives, Cochise saying that Cyrus is "magic", Cowboy being very sensitive about his Stetson, Fox being the observant one and Vermin being the comic-relief.

I am not sure that The Warriors provides the best example of different people co-existing, vibing and hanging. The gang culture was not only perpetually violent with groups defending turfs and fighting others, a lot of the gangs - as portrait in the movie - were formed based on ethnic identies. Looking back on this movie one has to be impressed by the ambitious nature of this film. The costume designer alone is the real hero of this movie each gang had su h a distinct look the number of extras needed for the big meeting alone must have been a nightmare to pull off.

Great point and this is all pre-CGI,so they had to do everything for real. The sheer logistics of setting everything up couldn't have been fun. I don't know if they used any matte paintings in the movie, though.Matte paintings were used in a lot of movies prior to CGI and some movies even still use them today but they're usually digital matte paintings instead of the hand-painted ones of old.

One of the most underrated movies. What makes it even more amazing was that the entire film was shot at night in keeping with the theme. Amazing job by everyone involved.

One of the best marriages of scenery and music, perfectly building up tension and keeping pace. The music is truely the unsung hero in this movie.

My dad inteoduced me to this movie and i fell in love with it. Im 21 now and would love to see a movie that takes place in this world the warriors were created in. But the way hollywood is these days i dont want them to destroy and disinterest me in the worlds these classic movies created. E.g (" Star wars") and everyother remake, remaster and sequel thats shat out these days just to profit off the original classic, great films that were made years ago

I was born January 23, 1979. This great movie was released February 9, 1979. Which makes me and This movie 45yrs old. I even loved playing the game. I wish Rockstar would bring the game back with today's graphics and an online multiplayer option. I'm from the Bronx, born and raised.

This movie is inspired by Xenophon's 'Anabasis' the true story of 10,000 Greek mercenary warriors who had to fight their way back through Persian controlled anatolia after their leader died they had to fight all sorts of tribes on their way back home to Greece and as soon as they saw their Coney Island (home) which were the Greek controlled coastal areas by the sea, the surviving Greek warriors cried out THALATTA! Which means sea in Greek. Even the names Ajax (Greek warrior)Cyrus ,(persian king) pay homage to the original events. Very cool stuff!
