This was heavy duty. She's just a granddaughter, he's just her grandfather. This is all really complicated with principles mixed with ambitions, politics mixed with being able to make films, America mixed with an immigrant mentality...and just so much more. My family was personally affected by HUAC, many people were. There are parallels to today with "cancel culture" vs. "populism" and "authoritarianism". Many politicians on the scene today remind me of McCarthy. But...naming names always seemed like a pretty damn bad choice. To me. Not to Eliza Kazan. So he named names.

I watched A Streetcar Named Desire when I was an early teen. I didn't understand it entirely, but, I knew I was experiencing something phenomenal.

"Nepotism?...I don't really think it has anything to do with me. It's a way to make themselves feel better." Delusion is a powerful thing.

Love her and her work but, sorry, no sale. The price paid by people who did not cooperate and 'name, names' was/is a lot steeper than having people 'sit on their hands' at an honorary award. I get it, that's her grand dad. But, there are a lot of people who have grand dads/moms, relatives and friends who suffered because they refused to do what he did. Let's remember and honor them.

jones1351 But they didn’t make great films though. And really Kazan had no choice, he did everything posible to survive.

@@copperdog exactly and he won two Oscars doing that. At the same time Elia Kazan won the Oscar for Waterfront bc the members of the Academy were afraid by him and his power.

it IS nepotism. And her granddad had no moral standards.

I get it, he was her frail grandfather. But the bottom line was he BETRAYED his peers. Art and politics are not separate. It's easy to live in a bubble.
