Video Introduction:
In February 2018, Zomato became a unicorn startup after raising US$200 million from Ant Financial at a valuation of US$1.1 billion.Later that year, it shut down operations of Zomato Infrastructure Services. In 2018, it acquired WOTU and rebranded it as Hyperpure to supply food ingredients such as grains, vegetables and meat to restaurants from its warehouses.
In September 2019, the firm laid off almost 10% of its workforce (540 people) tending to back-end activities like customer service, merchant and delivery partner support functions.
In April 2020, due to a fall in food delivery and a rising demand for online grocery ordering amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the firm began delivering groceries and essentials under a service named Zomato Market in 80+ cities across India.In April 2020, Zomato introduced contactless dining at its partner restaurants. In May 2020, Zomato also began delivering alcohol in West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha after obtaining the permission of the governments in these states. In May 2020, Zomato further laid off 520 employees due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Zomato closed operations of Zomato Market in June 2020 as demand for food delivery recovered and grocery delivery business "was not scalable". In April 2021, it pulled out of alcohol delivery service citing poor unit economics and scalability. In July 2021, Zomato went public, opening its Initial public offering at a valuation of over US$8 billion.
Zomato reentered grocery delivery space with a pilot launch in July 2021, allowing users to place orders from neighbourhood stores under a marketplace model. It shut down the service in September 2021. In April 2022, Zomato launched a pilot of 10-minute food delivery in Gurgaon called Zomato Instant.
Between 2010 and 2013, Zomato raised approximately US$16.7 million from Info Edge India, giving Info Edge India a 57.9% stake in Zomato. In November 2013, it raised an additional US$37 million from Sequoia Capital and Info Edge India.
In November 2014, Zomato completed another round of funding of US$60 million at a post-money valuation of ~US$660 million. This round of funding was being led jointly by Info Edge India and Vy Capital, with participation from Sequoia Capital.
While in April 2015, Info Edge India, Vy Capital and Sequoia Capital led another round of funding for US$50 million. This was followed by another US$60 million funding led by Temasek, a Singapore government-owned investment company, along with Vy Capital in September.
In October 2018, it raised $210 million from Alibaba's payment affiliate Ant Financial, which received an ownership stake of over 10% of the company as part of the round, which valued Zomato at around $2 billion. Zomato had also raised an additional $150 million from Ant Financial earlier in 2018.[57]
In September 2020, Zomato raised $62 million from Temasek, after previously committed capitol from Ant Financial never came through.[58]
In October 2020, as part of a Series J round of funding, Zomato raised $52 million from Kora, a US-based Investment firm.[59][60]
In February 2021, Zomato raised US$250 million from five investors, including Tiger Global Management, at a valuation of US$5.4 billion

I have worked previously on Zomato as a delivery boy and I can say this companies management is sickkk, there r so many communication gaps and mismanagement in business that u can't imagine.

Yes brother, I totally agree with you I also have worked with zomato as delivery boy, there management is not as expected and i was literally earned nothing because petrol price swallowed all earnings. Too much hard work still less earnings. Disgusting

Uptil 2019-2020 I ordered a lot from Zomato and Swigggy as the food was truly cheaper( at least rs 30-40 less) than buying from a restaurant. Now in 2022 the prices have increased so much ( with all delivery charges and taxes) that even the smallest item is atleast rs 30-40 more then local fast food shop. Ordering from these online food apps now does not make much sense unless one is in a time crunch.

Inflated price, Fake Tax r delivery charges ie too high. . Quantity of food is less than actually served by the restaurant...

True , I too have lessened ordering from these delivery apps now , every dish rate is inflated which is leading to negative word rather zomato could charge a reasonable service charge other than delivery charge instead of inflating the rate ,When I see higher rate I go to the restaurant or take parcel or just order directly from the restaurant

why do people expect them to keep burning cash forever? they were always going to hike prices sooner or later. It is better that they run their business in a way that is sustainable, because I like to have the option of ordering food without having to move my ass at all. I do not mind paying a premium for the service. Because if you think about it rationally you will se the restaurant ans swiggy both need to make a profit on each transaction to sustain!

As a customer I have never received refund for genuine reason from zomato. Where as swiggy is very transparent, they do ask questions and deliver resolution with refund. Zomato sucks

12:09 - Today I did the same. For ₹85 poha Zomato was charging 65 delivery charge+ tips + for₹10 curd, it's showimd 25 rupees. That poha shop was 2 km from house. I googled it and went there, had it. Zomato needs to rethink its business model.

These companies should make delivery boys life easier. They are the real heros. Requesting all people not to do fraud with them. Your fraud may cost them there a week earnings. Main competition for these food delivery platforms are that nowadays most of these restaurants have started their own free delivery.

Its not getting addicted to the discounts, but these companies are focused on making food ordering a habit, since many of us prefer food delivered to our home with just few simple clicks and the convenience is so much that I'd rather think 3 times while ordering from any local restaurant by calling them directly. When we get the habit of things getting delivered so easily we'll probably be okay to pay a 20-30 Rs on that delivery . When this habit is sustained, they can increase price as they wish to retain restaurants and delivery agents also. And we'll still order because at that time we won't think of going out and taking food for ourselves.

It has worked with Jio, they handed us 4G when no one asked for it for free, killed the competition and now they can manipulate the price as they wish too, even if the service is horrible they are charging a good price even an autowala/rickshawala/thelewala is forced to recharge these sims to complete his daily needs. And this strategy is legit but it requires a huge amount of cash burn to make people get addicted to it and that's what zomato and swiggy are doing. They might not be successful but surely food delivery system is not going die anytime soon.

@@rahulsharma2346 But Zomato and swiggy will always have a huge 1st mover advantage, they have rich experience in operating in these difficult market. Also, I doubt any investor would invest in a new startup offering same things as they know what zomato and swiggy are going through right now and it would require even more cash burn as they'll face huge competion from these two. Even if some one is ready to do that they need a X factor which cannot be copied ofcourse.

Agree in my area the hotel charges Gobi at 120 the same in swiggy & Zomato is 200 with 50% discount and they charge distance charges & peak hour charges to around 65rs so it comes to 170 they are just looting normal people

Small cities me aap restaurant price aur zomato price me zyada difference bhi nhi rakh sakte ......fir coupon apply hone ke baad kabhi kabhi item restaurant ke inhouse rate se bhi kam par jaata h, fir usme zomato ka 29% commission,result restaurant ko loss hota h. kabhi customer ne order complain kiya toh koi fact check nhi bas seedhe restaurant ko paisa lautane ko bola jaata h, no matter food is good and customer is doing dirty tricks to get the food and money at the same time . In house orders doesn't get complains most of the times because they have to bring proof for the same ...... I really want zomato and swiggy to go bankrupt ASAP .

I used to work with the zomato chat and email support, very poor communication with seniors and very strict policies about refunds if you receive bad food then just forget about your refund And promo and they classify customers category with their levels like Bronze. Silver, or gold, they obviously treat gold cx as a king but not others, worst management they expect CSAT from you, but it is very difficult to get because of bad policies if you get bad ratings from customers then they would mad at u

Same discount illusion is in Amazon and Flipkart....Bought ceiling fans in 1150/- per piece from a nearby vendor. Online same models was 1300/- after 44% discount !!

Not predictable...because ppl running the country are not predictable....Your right because street food is not regulated and public hazard ...and ppl spend money on hospitals...anyone can start a tea and chat without proper hygiene and cheap ppl like us go eat and repeat the cycle.....so no chnage in country and generations to co.e...

@@yyou6305 Sir, sorry to contradict you in the matter of hygiene and harzard. Some reports show that even in the so called five star hotels the food is contaminated and hazardous. So, in a nutshell there no outlet irrespective of regulated or unregulated we find clean food. We can see the issue of Maagi and pepsi which are evaluated by GOI department to be hazardous, our courts did not endorse them and advt shown are completely against it and our people again reverted back to the same products. Do we think that these are not regulated products (they have all licences).

Quick e-commerce are also not profitable as customer wants convenience along with big discount. FMCG sector has only a margin of around 10-20 percent and customer don't want to pay for delivery.

even I have done this work, we have to travel 120-140KM in a day, just to earn 750₹ that too from 12pm 8-pm. This business model is parasite business model.... all we do, but someone else takes its advantage.....

I still believe in Zomato stock... I was fortunate to buy it at 55/- ..... Zomato and Swiggy have already managed to survive the delivery race and become somewhat of a monopoly whereas food panda and ubereats lost... Imagine if Zomato and Swiggy merged and become a powerful monopoly.... Still hopeful on Zomato to be a mutibagger....

I think that I'm the best person here to answer this question because I have used Zomato as customer and seller both for couple of years. I am going to highlight a thing at which nobody has noticed and paid attention so far. It’s about ethical turned unethical practices of a Indian reputed firm so called “Zomato”. The era of food delivery at your home started around a decade ago which soon started becoming very much popular among one an all and eventuallh now almost is a name on each and everybody’s mouth. Myself, also being a very big foodie started availing Zomato’s delivery service sitting home which was an awesome experience in starting years. Food delivery in those days was costing not much expensive. Zomato’s surcharges from their partner restaurant which usually includes commission, tax on commission, and other advertisement charges for visibility on Zomato platform (may vary between 5-15% of order value on average basis) which cumulatively summed up t0 17-19 % till the period of 2019-20. Then pandemic changed everything and spared no business/person untouched however It’s Zomato who helped to cater every needy individual while sitting at home during lockdowns. This model was very much appreciated during those days and it was hugely considered by everyone that Zomato is the future and alternative of the dining outside but nobody then even thought of the dark truth to take place in time to come. Before all this story I would like to introduce myself briefly to relate the article better. I’m a 36 years old individual qualified as a Chemical Engineer with working experience of 10+ years. My last jobs were with reputed companies i.e. JSW group, Toranagallu, Karnataka and Tata Chemicals. After a long span of living a family life in these remote areas and meanwhile due to impacts of pandemic on job market made my mind set to enter into cloud kitchen business which used to be my second passion as I love cooking and eating. I took a huge risk leaving my job aside and started a cloud kitchen after trying for around 8-9 months. I had no lack of passion and was not at all scared of hard work. I was very much confident about my abilities and experience which I assumed will help me grow in this business. Zomato for me then was just like as it's for you, I or anyone else who know about it. My online food selling business started in May 2022 after documental formalities and final set up. Till that date, Zomato’s commission (including everything) officially was rose to 27% (and additional 5-10% for visibility ads) which is a lion’s share in profit. When we talk about eateries (restaurants, food stalls, street food stalls, Thelewala), 70% of the business even don’t manage to earn (say take home wages) this much amount to their home (27%). Now the story comes to Zomato. Earlier we used to go outside at restaurant physically to have our food whenever we wanted to do. Zomato eventually changed the picture and made things easy. People merely experienced when their meal plate became costlier like anything in very short time span in last couple of years. Due to this Zomato’s huge commission, restaurants started hiking their price by 30-40% which was a substantial amount of money in result . A person who was getting average meal for say at INR 150 + taxes + delivery charge) which may be approximate INR 175, he started getting the same food Rs. 250 or even more very soon. If restaurant tries to maintain the hiked price to make sale balanced, he falls in great loss. Meanwhile, Zomato always insist its restaurant partners to maintain the dining and delivery menu prices as same at each platform. 27% commission and taxes too just a myth. Zomato encourages or simply speaking blackmails restaurants to do participate in promotional programmes which are chargeable schemes. It means if restaurants don’t participate in programmes, their visibility on Zomato app will be as poor as that restaurant will hardly get a couple of orders in a day. Now the actual expenditure on Zomato ad comes into picture. They have customized several plans and schemes to be opted by restaurant partners. Big daddys in restaurant business can afford and select high package schemes whereas even a ordinary package is costlier for a common food service provider restaurant yet no option left but to go with ad scheme. It indirectly adds an additional average 5-15% load summing it to 33% in total. The story doesn’t even end here. Unethical practices from Zomato leave no stone unturned for businessman to earn his bread and butter. Every now and then, Zomato sends a mail to their restaurant partners that they are starting a campaign where restaurant’s visibility will be made higher on Zomato food delivery app for which restaurant has to opt for their scheme in which restaurant has to provide a promo discount to customer. This discounted amount is completely borne by restaurant however Zomato never highlights the same and takes all the credit of discount themselve as you must have seen while ordering food. A dirty reality is that customer always thinks that the discount being offered is by Zomato and not by restaurant. In some cases, for this under-priced food, if any complaint is raised by customer which comes in the form of review / ratings which directly affect restaurant’s overall image and rating, Zomato imposes the things on Restaurant's head. However up to this it’s fine but in some cases spam ratings also take place for which Zomato never let restaurant speak directly to customer due to which their probability of making the repeated mistake can be nullified. As mentioned above, these promotional campaign sometimes are imposed without authorization of restaurant. Restaurant comes to know on this when a lot of orders are already gone. These discount promos are operated by Zomato itself hence can’t be stopped by self. It takes 2-3 days after your complaint to get the promo offer stopped. Till the same time, you have no other option left with you to do. First is to turn the restaurant off on Zomato (which negatively impacts the image of restaurant on customers) and other is to bear the losses of unauthorized discounts (unwillingly but only to show the restaurant open). Due to policies made by Zomato, if restaurant rejects the order in this case, visibility of restaurant on Zomato app becomes so poor that restaurant may not receive new customer's orders for couple of days. This thing has been experienced by me repeatedly in last few months, and subsequently Zomato has not compensated for these losses anytime or even not bothered to revert on raised complaints in form of tickets. Next point is that Zomato is so unethical that many restaurant which are getting continuous negative rating yet managed to maintain the restaurant rating as 4+ on app (because they are paying good to Zomato for ads and giving substantial business to Zomato). It doesn’t apply for common restaurants who are not capable to pay heft ransom in form of paid ads (though restaurants may be good in terms of quality and taste but not popular). Zomato doesn’t share its algorithm methodology (confidential as per Zomato) which they use for restaurant’s overall rating calculation and on the basis of same they are not at all bothered to answer your restaurant’s rating calculation. Overall rating on Zomato is a main factor depending upon which the sales is dependant. I tried no stone unturned to improve my retuarant’s rating by getting maximum 5 stars from customers serving them the best yet failed to improve rating because Zomato is not all bothered to answer my question on the same. Each and every query is raised in form of tickets to Zomato. It is always replied with customized and computerized mails and subsequently tickets are closed. There is no direct telephonic link to talk to Zomato anytime in need for any kind of information / urgency. In this case restaurant feel nothing but helpless. 8 out of 10 restaurants are being closing every year but now I came to know that 4 of them are well deserving but are victims of business based corruption say monopolization / duopolization of Zomato and Swiggy. Surprisingly, there is no proper statutory authority from Government is controlling these firm. This is directly affecting consumers. The days are not far when food will not be in plates. It will be in small bowls. The above content is a brief article that I would like to convey to you in hope that it will be highlighted and brought to consumers like you and me. The time is not far when Zomato will be a modern franchise version of EAST INDIA COMPANY. I’m already at the verge of closing my kitchen but before that I want to let the reality come in everybody’s knowledge. Many more things are there which I’m not highlighting in this short content. Lastly, I would only like to say, SAVE YOUR PLATE.

Cloud kitchen industry is booming which is dependent on Zomato Swiggy. If zomato swiggy fail, they will also. And the numbers of people are increasing who wants the food delivered at their doorstep, no matter it's double priced. It will be hard for restaurants to survive if they don't have their presence on these platforms until or unless they have some crazy level of taste. They will never be short of delivery boys in near future as we have a huge unemployed youth. Their delivery cost will also go down after these cheap ev scooters. Hence Zomato is future, no doubt.

I do Uber Eats in Canada , the policies are very similar here too but the benefit/good part/ how the delivery companies here get drivers is the tips. People pay a good amount of tip on the orders while in India nobody dares to pay a single Penny to the poor delivery drivers. It's a shame, just extreme level exploitation of cheap labor.

I have worked as an one day delivery boy for swiggy for a vlog , i spoke with few delivery guys and by their saying i got to know that swiggy is alot better than Zomato in terms of payment , during rainy season swiggy pays ₹80 per order and Zomato is based on km and target orders .. right now Zomato and swiggy are completely trash , they offer bogus discounts . It's better to order from small startups like eatsure , eat club etc anything which are giving good discounts

Everything has it's own pros and cons. When you outside to pick your food, suppose for 4kM one side. Rs 60 to Rs 100 petrol will be used for 8 to 10kM. And time spend to pick up that order. Definitely these co.apnies making habit, but useful for person who are old age sick or planing party at home.
