It's the third of five times we see a man carrying a kid that way. First, a Joel carrying Sarah to her room in a living but routine way, then Joel's terrorized attempt to get Sarah to safety, then this kid. I think it's brilliant that we see these staff of the evil FEDRA behaving compassionately. But they don't know that an Ellie scenario is possible. They may be euthanizing more Ellie's because they test positive (as Ellie does at the end, at least at that duration of infection). But I think this boy not being able to speak may be an indication that he's becoming symptomatic.

@@JessTheMD To clarify further: They removed spores from the show since they didn't want people to run around in gas masks all the time. In the games it's more for flavor as there's no real gameplay related threat. The characters just put the masks on in areas with spores, which are typically highly infested environments.

One indication that the boy who wandered into the QZ was being euthanized was the lack of any attempt to swab his arm with alcohol or even rolling up his sleeve, they just injected him right through his dirty shirt. Obviously, there was no concern about infection for someone you are killing. As soon as the female soldier asked him about the injury to his leg she knew what the test would show and was already going into comfort mode so he would not be afraid and would pass as free from being aware of what was happening as possible. As for the infected, people expect them to behave like traditional zombies as in thinking the dead woman being examined in episode 2 would spring to life and attack the mycologist. Zombies are reanimated dead people who are driven not to procreate but rather to feed on the living. If a person is attacked by a zombie and isn't completely consumed, then their dead body is reanimated, and they become zombies too. It's all about the supernatural and magic. Here the infected are hosts for the fungus that feeds on them and uses them to procreate. They aren't inherently evil; in fact they mostly react violently when a person resists. Their purpose is to continue their species, not purposely terrorize or kill. When you kill the host the fungus inside is still alive but is unable to escape the now dead host. Eventually when there is nothing left to feed on from the host corpse the cordyceps inside dies. In this episode these infected are the first stage known as runners. They don't show outward signs of infection like fungal growth and are extremely fast and strong but also clumsy and awkward as the fungi does not exert fine motor control over them. They also have the beginnings of vision problems that become worse in the later stages of infection. In the game, you can hear them crying as they wander around and at times while they are biting people. The hypothesis is that at this early stage of infection when the cordyceps hasn't completely gained control of their brains they are still aware of what's going on and what they are doing but are unable to stop themselves or exert any kind of control over their actions. They are trapped inside their own bodies and suffering mentally.

Great breakdown. If the time jump is EXACTLY 20 years, this is the 20th anniversary of Sarah's death that Joel goes to bed with the hydro and moonshine. Outbreak day is 9/26/03 (Joel's 36th birthday), Sarah dies after midnight so 9/27/03. It's going to be triggering just having a normal day in the QZ. One day later, he sees Tess bruised, learns of the snag in the Find Tommy plan, and meets Ellie, who reactivates something buried. More stress. On day 3, the stress of episode 2. On day 4, the Joel/Ellie portions of Episode 3. Day 5-6, episode 4. Day 7 -8, Episode 5. There's basically 1 day in there (day 5) that is free of piling additional stress or trauma.

You should check out that Star Trek: The Next Generation episode called "Ethics" which is about medical ethics and an experimental procedure. It's very science fiction, so there won't be a lot of real-life medical stuff, but the issue of when to use experimental procedures comes up so you can weigh in on whether or not you think that they should do the procedure, under the circumstances.

I cry at Sarah's death every time. I cried the first time I played the game, the second, the third, when I watched the show. It's rough. I will say too in the game the spores were airborne but they do change it for the show otherwise they'd be wearing masks all the time and avoiding spores every five feet, which makes sense for a stealth/horror survival game but definitely harder for a tv show. One other thing they did a little different is in the game the outbreak happened in 2013 when the game came out but it the show they made it 2003 so that when they went 20 years later it would be happening in the present day instead of the future. Though to me it might have made sense if they had the outbreak happen in 2023 and the time jump 2043 but that is just me. Other than those two things they stick pretty close and the other changes make sense like stopping in Kansas City instead of Pittsburg and they also expanded on a few parts that was nice. Anyway hope you liked it.

Thank you. The gesticulating and zooming and booming makes for epileptic seizure inducing viewing. It's not a tik tok video;. It's 13 minutes of sensory overload. Isn't this supposed to be informative, first? How am I to retain any information that is given with all those whoops and whooshes. I can listen quite well; you dont have to be moving around to retain my attention. I clicked on this specifically because I was interested in an M.D's point of view-not an influencer on a sugar high. I always wonder if creators watch their own finished products before putting them up and enjoy what they see- if it serves its intended purpose. This is like having a conversation with someone who is constantly moving around, getting right in your face, flapping their hands in front of your eyes and not really caring if you're still listening but you dont want to be rude. She has a soothing voice, good cadence, gives short and succinct information and has an animated face, a nice little decor; she only requires an editor to cut for time. Not an EDM videoclip

The problem that i have with the show is the type of fungal infection that they are referencing isn't fast and it presents more obvious signs. The ants that they specifically reference at the start, their behavior is so abnormal and so quickly determinate by other ants that they RARELY spread in whole communities. The ants notice one of their fellows' oddities, lift them up and then take them out to an area where they cannot reasonably spread. The type of neurological extremes that should have been taking place would be more like a grand mal seizure... individuals can't walk, they can't process, they're basically in the throes of death. Also, the spread times for infection are WAY too fast. The only way for this to make sense is if someone specifically breed a specific type of fungus. Admittedly I never watched the show (except episode 1) nor played the games so it's very possible that might be a viable option, but even in that case, there are so many oddities in the show's first episode on how the infection is spread (fungus, like with the ants known as Othiocordyceps force the body to find a high ground to explode and then the spores can be inhaled for instance) that I have a really hard time with the show's basic conceit. Like they definitely love Cordyceps (I am a huge fan myself), but no. I am sorry. It reminds me of the movie Gravity. It makes you think it's really smart but it's sort of faking it to make it. And that's okay mind you. It is fiction after all. But I have seen people WAY TOO scared about this to make it just flat okay. Be scared but also be aware this isn't something we have any capacity to replicate without a wide range of evolution in the field of parasitology and mycology.

Your point totally makes sense! I like to somewhat suspend reality when I watch shows like this. Like “okay. I’ll give you this one assumption that makes the rest of it make sense, now let’s talk about all the other stuff” 😉 Your comparison to gravity is hilarious! I remember watching that movie and just being like “why am I watching Sandra Bullock pant for a few hours in a row?” 😂

@@JessTheMD I love to write fiction, I get suspension of disbelief, its extremely important to being able to tell the story you want to tell. There isn't really a but for me here, I just get scared that the people who watch these shows and that their suspension becomes actual belief, it's dangerous. I have a friend who when I was first posting about being obsessed with mycology and parasitology (I promise I am a lot weirder when you get to know me) after the Last of Us premiered, told me how she was truly terrified that this was plausible (and to note this is technically plausible, it's just highly improbable)... and I had to coach her into understanding the actual science behind it. And that largely consisted of me telling her what I know and then referring her to actual experts (I am not an expert in either field, I have no work experience or higher education in those subjects, I am just an enthusiast). These shows can be a great gateway into subjects' people might not otherwise involve themselves in and I respect that. I just don't want to see people believing its around the corner. A great example of how horror and media can turn a population against something you can cite JAWS for the population decline in sharks in certain regions in the United States. Have fun with horror but don't actually be terrorized. Thanks for responding by the way, I appreciate the content as a recent subscriber.
