Boise is the same way. Can only sow the cold crops and then one day it decides to be hot and it's HOT from then on. Have a lot of lettuce ready to harvest, peas aren't doing much, will sow more. Got some swiss chard up, no broccoli, will sow again, but gotta get the melons, etc, etc, etc in the ground first. Not doing corn this year but am doing some wheat for the hens. Have radishes, beets, and turnips coming up. That grass has invaded me this year, too where it never did before so yep, am weeding, weeding ,weeding. Just put the potato chits in containers and planted out the tomato starts yesterday. Looks like the only tree fruit I'll get this year will be the Bing cherries again. Have 9 fruit trees and 2 nut trees that the 10 just aren't mature enough yet but can always count on the blackberries, black raspberries, and grapes.

I live in Helena, MT and our garden season JUST started as well. We have the same struggles as you. I've lived here 3 years now and the past 2 years, I've only been successful with cherry tomatoes. LOL Everything else doesn't do well. Now I have learned my lesson this year and have put up bird netting to keep them and hopefully deer out. LOL

Ugh. I'm sorry to hear about your garden struggles. BUT they make you a better gardener in the end. Have you tried the black tarps? They make such a huge difference for me. Cheers to a successful tomato season for us both. :)

I contemplated starting corn that way also. On it tomorrow. I’ve failed at corn the past few years and not sure this package will grow either. Looking forward to your updates.

Ooooo keep me posted if you try it! I'd love to hear what variety you go with. I've grown excellent corn many years... but then the frost kills it all. hahahah. I'm really excited to try it again.

Hopefully the corn trick works for you. I live in zone 3a and found "orchard baby" corn works really well in my cold area. 65 days to harvest and grows about 3 feet tall. Only disadvantage is the cobs are about 6" but REALLY sweet. Good luck!

Oh interesting! I will add that to my list to try. I'd be thrilled to get any corn at this point. hahah!

Have you ever grown buckwheat? I think it’s almost perfect for your zone…fast sprout time and it has a very fast grow cycle. Also just like peas fix nitrogen…buckwheat fixes phosphorus and calcium and the roots are very fibrous which is great for breaking up the top layer of soil. Besides the benefits to the soil it’s very good for you and might be a fun things to try…probably not the fastest thing to harvest but from what I hear it’s a very consistent crop and has been for years.

I have grown buckwheat as a cover crop before. Well before my KZbin years. hahah It did great. I totally forgot about it! I should try it again. I'm experimenting with some flax and crimson clover this year... just a tiny patch of each. Now I'm gonna have to check my seeds and see if I still have seeds for buckwheat. If I do I will plant some.

I live in north Idaho also, I’m going to try and grow corn in soil blocks like you are trying! Thanks for the idea! I’m looking forward to your recommendations for earwigs and voles.

Oh yay!! Keep me posted! I love that other people are giving it a go. I'd love to hear which variety you are going and what town you are closest to. I just talked with someone about another vole remedy yesterday! We are gonna try that one as well.

Hopefully one of the varieties that you try are our Golden Bantam Corn #heirloomsevermoreseedco

I've tried Golden Batam corn before with no luck. I found some varieties that are even shorter season than the golden is.... but if this method works I will definitely try it again.
@lesliekendall56684 ай бұрын
I planted Golden Bantam last year. All grew and not a single ear of corn. Personally, I'll never buy it again.

@@EsthersEden Great! I've not heard of it before. Here in the UK cider is an alcoholic drink, not sure about your fire cider?!
@EsthersEden2 ай бұрын
My family is from England - Ipswich. We are always trying to find a genuine English hard cider here... it's a challenge. Fire Cider is nothing like it. It's a non alcoholic strong concoction made with herbs and vinegar and honey. It is great for warming the body in the winter months and assisting the body in healing from colds and things.
