At the end of the day, you gotta remember that C-RAM stands for Counter Rocket Artillery Mortar, meaning it fires on objects that arent going to turn unpredictability like an aircraft. SAMs and AAMs (Surface to Air/Air to Air Missile)are much more suited to take down an aircraft due to the fact that it can adjust its vector in mid air, while a bullet obviously cannot. This is a great example of the saying “use the right tool for the right job”
@thuggeegaming6592 жыл бұрын
I agree. But realistically this would never happen anyway, no CIWS would operate without SAMs and no fighter would ever get that close without being shot to pieces by SAMs first. With that said, high powered directed energy weapons could shoot down fighter aircraft, and a railgun could as well if firing a guided projectile combined with a proximity fuse. Both of which are likely to be developed within the decade.

I was always curious about this. Seeing how much you have to predict the movement of the missile or aircraft and shoot far ahead of the time hoping that by the time the bullets reach that point the aircraft is passing through that point in space. it must mean the auto targeting systems on those C-RAM are amazing, not just only looking at the current trajectory of the object, but using what type of vehicle/missile it is, using predictive flight pattern knowledge based on that information, so whether it is this type of jet or another, and what types of flying patterns you would expect in those planes, or in a missile, and use that to send the barrage to that point of space anticipating the meeting in time of those things. But clearly this is why guided missiles for targeting down aircraft or missiles I am sure is far more effective. C-RAM would be better fighting on water with other ships. Or taking out land based vehicles or troops. In the air there is just so much space to avoid even that continuous fire. of course would love to see what this looks like in real life, a real encounter. Seems like there is alot that is still going to be similar. Of course the movement of the aircraft will be different, and the ai behind the autofire on the C-RAM i would have to think is even better at predicting movements.
@MsArchitectschannel2 жыл бұрын
These turn out to be FAR more effective than shown here in real life. This is a simulation with a simple targeting algorithm, in real life something like 1% of the output of the whole US is spent perfecting targeting systems. There are multiple videos of real life examples if you want to look them up.
@xavi.cat.40952 жыл бұрын
@@MsArchitectschannel Also, with dumb rockets, some missiles, and artillery/mortar rounds the trajectory is pretty linear and relatively simple to calculate, but aren't the bullets too slow for the system to adapt well to the constantly changing directions of planes, for example? Of course, if the plane is slow and close that won't matter but that's always the case.
@Arrogan282 жыл бұрын
@@MsArchitectschannel I have, actually, but I was mostly seeing missile defense, which seems much more straight forward as it is much easier to predict the path of a missile then a jet. I was just curious of these could be effective against a jet with the right firing algorithm in charge. And so was actually fishing to see if anyone had experience with such things, and knew if that was possible. ie using flight prediction patterns with jets for instance to effectively bring down such targets. But missiles seem like the far more logical targets for these, agreed from who said that above... but since the videos of the other encounters I have found were all missiles, I wasn't even sure if a C-RAM is used in such encounters, or if that is taken care of by more convention ground to air defense strategies like flake ammunition and or ground to air missiles...

Same munition cost as the Mavericks are old-stock inventory and Mk.82s cost about as much, per pound, as hamburger whereas just the KMU kit for a GBU-31 is 21,000 dollars. 9 million dollar A-10 wins, 100 million dollar F-35 gets participation trophy. *In truth, the F-35 might stick around to engage in some electronic attack as DOS 'ooooh, squirrel!' overload on the Centurion's radar so they might have to shift to the backup optical channel and the C-RAM could miss...

You're correct. This is not a realistic simulation of a modern C-RAM, even if it was one from the 80s. Clearly they're simulating a C-RAM using a Phalanx CIWS. But it can manually aim if the object has no real radar signature like a F-35. And even the F-35 gives enough of a radar signature for a C-RAM to lock on to, as it launches missiles or bombs. Plenty enough for a modern C-RAM to lock on and predict a flight path. Meaning it can still put some extra ventilation in a F-35. Any real pilot would bug out if they discovered AAA like that. Too easy to come around to an altitude beyond the gun range and drop bombs or ASMs and hope for the best. But they would NEVER send in A-10s after knowing an enemy had AAA like a C-RAM. It would have shredded those A-10s in seconds. Big radar signatures and even with the acrobatics A-10 drivers are known for...if you're that low and close to a C-RAM, you're swiss cheese even in a flying tank. Only so much titanium can do against 20mm rounds, firing 20 rounds per second.

fun fact, c ram rounds usually travel about 30 miles before reaching its intended location ( meaning its shooting at a jet thats still about 30 miles behind where its actually pointing and the jet or missile essentially flies into oncoming bullets)

These videos are tremendously annoying. (A) C-RAM is not used for Anti-Aircraft in Real Life and (B) they only have a bit over 900 rounds in the ammo drums on these things (before they have to be reloaded). C-RAM is for shooting down incoming Rocket, Artillery and Mortar rounds. Air defense uses missile batteries.
@anthonymitchell72252 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about they have c rams on battleships to shoot down choppers air ballistics and jets, why wouldn't they have them at air bases or just any bases in general and the smaller ones have 900 rounds but as you can see that is not a small one the can on that ficker easily hold a couple thousand rounds the thing is the size of a pickup truck
@mhobson20092 жыл бұрын
@@anthonymitchell7225 No, they have CIWS (Close In Weapons System) on naval vessels. CIWS has a few components in common with C-RAM, but will not do the same job, which is detect and shoot down incoming Rocket, Artillery and Mortar rounds while simultaneously directing counter-battery fire upon the site that fired the projectile(s). They are greatly different systems that happen to share the Phalanx 20mm M61A Vulcan Gun gun and mount with the R2-D2 radars, housing and electronics. To get a C-RAM from that, one has to add the US. Army FireFinder system, targeting computers to direct the Phalanx mount, almost entirely different software in the Phalanx mount, U.S. Army fire control area network equipment, and portable generators to power the whole thing. CWIS (Navy) and C-RAM (Army) are two completely different systems with a few parts in common.
