Equal parts fun and depressing. Thanks lads for the stroll around Aucklands lifeless inner city in 2023, remembering a time when our generation actually had a cultural identity and contribution. Great to see Uncle Phil coming with the instant golden memories and the casual walk on from living legend Steve Hill . Nostalgic tour. In 1992 I lived at Box/Cause Celebre every weekend. I was 18 but Soane always let me in in spite of the R20, good bloke and Geeling was cool too. Kevin the Hat was a legend 🍸 You didn’t mention Alphie’s or the various bars at DeBrett’s. Signal Records on the corner of Fort St & Fort Ln which predated Bassline. Punch & Judy also on Fort St. Rakino’s where Holly Smith started her career. Papa Jack’s (where Loungehead first played) & The Dragon Bar on Vulcan Ln. Fu Bar (former Stanley’s), Mantrap and Pod on Queen St. The Pelican Bar on Elliot St. Attica on Fanshawe St where Mickey Havoc had his first residency. Ministry of Sound on Albert St formerly The Staircase & Piano Bar. Don’t Tell Mama on K’Rd is the former Vogue Cinema, it was also named Virgin for a time. The first Brain was held there in late 1991 I think. Legends Bar next to Las Vegas where the first ‘smart drinks’ were served. Cheap Sex at Squid was the most fun I ever had at a nightclub. Part rave part shag fest!

Even way before that in the early 90s i remember going there for a hip hop nite, but we were literally blown away by this unknown funk band called Supergroove, u just knew they were gonna blow up. U guys mention so many names & places i felt like i was back in the 90s😂😂😂 good ol Providahore, i use to work there too 🤣 I remember a feeling of missing out, coz id hear about all these clubs from patrons but i never go coz im stuck at the door on fort st till 6am, at which time an injured Awen Gutenbeil of the warriors saying every weekend 'who wants to go to Shakers?' 😂😂

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. The 1990s was a great time for clubbing in Auckland. There were plenty of clubs to choose from, and every one of them packed to the rafters. Waterfront bar over to Loaded Hog, Studebakers, Custom house, Park and Bar, Rose and Crown, De Bretts, Shakers, Base Bar, DTMs, a few others that were in Vulcan lane upstairs. There were clubs everywhere. Some place else was a good starting point at the top end of K Rd, then you either went down K'rd or down to the bottom end of Queen St. Before you knew it, the sun was coming up. There were a few clubs near Vic Park Market that were always packed as well. Good times. 😂 You'd have to plan your night or weekend in advance. There were a few other clubs near JDs that weren't too bad if you wanted to listen to rock/pop music. Plenty of choices for everyone. Downtown had it all.

Thanks for the video guys, was really great going down memory lane. RE: Grant's comment around weather or not Auckland was known internationally. Our time releasing records in the breaks an drum n bass scene, the DJs (Rennie Pilgrim, Ctrl-Z, Aston from the Freestylers, Tom from Broke records and the Autobots, Dan from Breakbeat Kaos) would always comment about Auckland and its massive reputation on the international level. So many DJs came over here and had such a great time because of the people in the scene, the DJs, the country that it fast became the hot ticket. All thanks to the ground work you guys put in late 80s early 90s. Another thing that was pivital to the scene success back then was the underage feeder clubs like Platnium 104 which groomed young eletronic music enthusiast for the Auckland nightlife. Some that was missing in the mid 2000s.

Yeah I remember Retro Wednesday nights at the Box! My first time there was when it was Club Mirage in 1984 but that High St scene from around 1990-1995 with the Box, Voodoo Lounge, Bobs, the Ox, Queens Ferry, Squid and around that Vulcan Lane was so packed on Friday and Saturday nights - never seen anything like that before that you could hardly move because that whole area was just packed with people! During the 80s you had the pubs in Parnell - The Exchange, Windsor Castle (later became Frames) and the Alex and in town you had The Empire and De-Bretts and Shadows / The Kiwi / The Globe unversity drinking holes! Then you had nightclubs like Casablanca, Zanzibar and Club Mirage. My favourite pubs was the Occidental and the Masonic! Its a pity that a lot of the great old pubs are gone now - back in the early-mid 80s the university pub crawl listed around 32 pubs back then!!!!

Great video. I was working at both the St James for Deep Hard & Funky and the Grand Circle doing ''coatcheck'' work for the General Manager Tom and Anne Samson. And always straight after work i would meet up with my other friends at Calibre. Thanks for the video, sharing this with my friends..

Would be cool to see a hip hop one era 00-05 My favourite was Bass Bar on Victoria. Another fave was one on high street but I forgot the name! Also on high was Rakinos which was soul soul/funk. Wednesday nights at Safari on Ponsonby and Fu bar on queen. Wknds we'd hit the viaduct Waterfront and the massive club beside soul restaurant think was called Headquarters. Khuja lounge up stairs on corner of queen and Krd. Thursday at code bar on high st and there was another one on Wyndham I think was called Wyndham. It’s all a bit fuzzy 😝 but what a time. Hip hop and rnb was 🔥

I could've sworn that Sinners had a simulcast on George FM with TVNZ or one of the tv broadcasters playing a kids tv show and the buildups of the drama and the drop where the characters would all just break out dancing, I swear it wasn't just me!

That biggest club was originally leftfield where I started as a glassy, Lennin was next door and yup coast upstairs! This a great vid! Where my era in NZ Hospo started as a 17year old kid drinking with the bouncers, all across the city, you forgot 76, Bed, ink bar and the end of everynight on krd - supper club aka sluppers. Miss spent youth - and still in Hospo hahaha - epic vid!
