Young gorilla Gladys is recovering after surgery to repair broken arm
CINCINNATI, OH (April 18, 2024) -Eleven-year-old gorilla Gladys is recovering behind the scenes in Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s Gorilla World after undergoing surgery on Sunday to repair a broken humerus. She sustained the injury last Friday during a scuffle with the younger two females in her troop.

Bravo to the Keepers who quickly noticed that Gladys was hurt. Thank you to the CCHMC staff for their great care. And thank you to the engineers at General Electric for helping to build a titanium cast. Gladys joins Fiona in assisting our Zoo in keeping our animals healthy.

The description says she had a "tussle" with two of the younger female gorillas in the troop. Don't know if that means they were play-fighting or actually fighting, but injury sometimes happens either way.

That poor sweetie! I wonder how she managed to do that? Hopefully she has a quick recovery. But I can't imagine how she's going to cope once the cast is removed because her muscles will have atrophied. How do you provide physical therapy for a gorilla to help them regain muscle strength so they don't have repeat injuries? My husband had to wear a boot for six weeks to help heal an injured foot, and once he was allowed out of the boot, he quickly discovered just how much his leg and foot muscles had atrophied, and it wasn't fun to rebuild lost muscle strength for him. It didn't feel good to do the exercises, but he did because he understood why he had to do them. You can't exactly explain to a gorilla why she needs to carefully exercise those muscles when the exercises make it uncomfortable.

Yes some human medical Drs work with animal Drs. We had a vet who was friends with a Dr. They'd exchange ideas, & solutions.

I'll tell you Exactly how and why she was named Gladys. She was born down in Brownsville Texas at the GLADYS PORTER ZOO. Her mother was a first time mom and wasn't caring for her. The Zoo had no other available females to be a surrogate. So they and the SSP, Species Survival Program, decided the best chance for the baby was to come to Cincinnati Zoo. So to honor and give thanks to That Zoo, Keepers here named her Gladys. She was also given the last name of Stones in honor of GPZ's director who cared for her before coming here. So her name is GLADYS STONES!

The swelling no titanium won't be good she can easily get compartmentism where the swollen muscle and tissues have so much extracellular fluid it restricts the blood vessels causing trapped cell waste necrosis of tissue unable to respirate and oxygenation isn't happening then the cellular waste the damaged tissue necrosis the trapped blood in the anaerobic space of that binding cast this is a recipe for sepsis gangrene infection nerve damage severe pain,,, TITANIUM cast come on...come on...boost her selenium and magnesium potassium and iron...phshhh I'm so upset the swelling from gorilla injuries are twice that of humans due to the mass of muscle tissue ligaments tendons the tremendous strength they have to bear the weight and to balance and support their movement in their gait...using those arms non stop to climb ambulate and pull themselves towards their enclosures and doorways...this is a problem...why didn't anyone see this happen? How did this happen?

I never thought I would share a scar with a Gorilla~! I know how she feels with that cast on, that face is 100% the same one I made as a kid. Here's hoping Gladys recovers quicky and safely~
