Hey Aaron, Your passion for this pedal is clear for all to see. I purchased this pedal with the expression pedal around two months ago to run with my saxes and love it. I haven't explored the many effects yet but it has totally transformed my playing and what I have to offer to the audience. Thank you for your help with understanding what you can do with the pedal.

Hey there! Got me one a year ago, didn't have the right oppurtunity to dig in very deep. I use this as Reverb and Delay for my saxophone. It definitely replaced my mixer I was using. It's compact, lightweight and you can power this with batteries, power adapter or even a power bank!! For me it works with a phone charger and a micro USB cable. It's also very easy to use and to adjust on the fly, even as a solo performer. Never had any issues adjusting the delay time for my sax mic while performing with a DJ for example. Got to admit it is nowhere close to the higher end from TC Helicon or Boss, but neither is its price. In all a very nice and affordable pedal for musicians that don't need all the bells and whistles of the higher end products. Got the A1 without the expression pedal, never needed it anyway! Thank you for your review!!

Hi Aaron, I was looking into the Zoom A1 Four pedal and came across your review. You convinced me!!! As a performer I use the Boss VE-2 voice enhancer and Trio+ band creator for looping and drum rythm sequencing. The Zoom A1 is the last gem to complete my gig-board. Instead of using my amp to create reverb and chorus I will have a bucket load of cool effects at the tap of a foot so my guitar will really stand out. I just got mine and I am very pleased. I think this is an amazing value for the money. I attended this primarily for use with my harmonica when I play either acoustic or electric gigs. But it’s great to sing through also.The stock sound bank is excellent, there are extra slots to record your own presets, and you can modify the stock ones. I already have a Zoom 24 track digital recorder and the built-in delays and reverbs and choruses and distortions are all great. On this pedal, I especially love the rotary effect, the chorus effect,and an effect called Sax My Lady, that sounds like a stacked harmony.

The short comings of small buttons, for the looper etc was the same issue on the previous pedal the zoom G1ON. It can be fairly easily overcome, by removing the bottom plate and soldering wires on the the pads on the circuit board at the button positions, feed them to a multi-way connector and then make an external foot switch box.

Hi Aaron, wonderful review, but something of interest maybe to others not mentioned is the SAD LOOPER and no way of removing a bad overdub and also if you wish to loop with drum machine, it only plays back the guitar but not the drums...The effects are great for acoustics but they dropped the ball with the looper..I ended up using a separate looper on the output of Zoom and I can loop with drums and effects...Works nice overall.
@aaronshortmusic4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching. Yes the looper isn’t amazing but I have to say that this is an EXTREMELY affordable multi effects pedal so I wouldn’t expect it to have a looper that is as good as a dedicated one. I feel it’s mainly for sound checks and practise. Technology is improving all the time so who knows what the next one will be like!

Hey Aaron, great review, I have learned a few new things to try. I use this pedal in my solo shows to back vocals. I am primarily a vocalist and use guitar for accompaniment. Despite the comments about the different AG simulators being all the same - and it may well be the case - and the real effect coming from EQ - what I find is that if I want to do a calypso or latin number, I can select nylon and it gives a subtle suggestion of a nylon sound that works fine, if I want to do a blues number, I can select Blues, same for Country and the Jumbo and Vintage are great for a bit of folk. Some of the pre-sets do not work at all for me and this is where I will go into the app and try some adjustments. Overall, for me, I can get many different sounds out of the same guitar for backing vocals to get variety just by selecting the different AG presets. This is great for a solo vocalist guitar player. I also use a Boss VE-500 which provides harmonies and between the 2 pedals, I have most of what I need.

I would have thought most people would be interested in different reverb styles or delays, not to mention EQ for mixing in with other band members? I have owned and gigged with a couple of previous generations of these pedals and still have the A2. They are a lovely box of useful tricks and the thing I like most about this A1 Four is ease of use on the edits, plus the 3 band graphic always available. Zoom are doing good work here. Thanks for the review Aaron!
@jonbanner58234 жыл бұрын
LizardKing0851 Have you achieved that? and how, if i may ask? In a live setting I have been striving for a raw authentic pure acoustic tone for a long, LONG time and still not totally happy with my results, so far the combo that seems to closely recreate the guitars sound I've found is the K&K pure mini and TC Helicon Body Rez (which i was really reluctant to use but) other than an external mic of course but still not quite there. The venues I play are way too noisy for a mic and I've tried many other pickups as well. I was at a local open mic one night and a guy from Philly walked in with a Martin D45 and just plugged right in (no pedals) into a one tower Bose L1 i think it was but it just about knocked me off my seat! Perfect acoustic tone and articulation and from what I could see it had no on board tone/volume. After he finished I asked what pickup he was using and he just said "its a trade secret" and he left! lol

Surprised there is so much praise for this pedal. I firstly always listen to units with no effects or modules to start with to see how it compares with with the natural sound of my pick ups & see if there is any 'tone suck'. For me there clearly is with the A1 Four. What do I expect for £100 you may ask & that's a valid argument but the video here makes it sound amazing & for me it really isn't. If your instrument sounds worse with it plugged in before you start adding effects then you're in a losing battle from the start IMO. My guitar has a hexaphonic piezoelectric pickup & a built in condenser mic so it sounds really good. I was hoping this unit would add a bit of reverb, delay, compression & maybe some modulation as well as the built in floor tuner. But it's all useless to me if my guitar sounds worse plugged into it than not & I think It's a pointless exercise trying to retrieve loss of tone through eq. Mine's going back to the shop. I did like the tuner though, it was accurate & the whole thing being super light & small was really appealing. Great video, you sold it to me well.
@AlahuSnackbar2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I think this is marketed and intended for the people aren't going for that hi def sound that you and I are after. None of this unit is analog unfortunately. I agree though that sound and tonal clarity is absolutely a first, and everything else is a distant second.

QUESTION: I have two adjacent patches, one with much reverb/delay and one with little or no reverb/delay. I alternate between two within songs and even in the middle of a chord. Can I change patches in the middle of a chord with no "click", no "pop", no silent gap, and with the reverb & delay "tails" continuing into the next patch? [I realize that to have continuing "tails" I must set "tail on" in the reverb & delay parameters.] Please answer only if you've actually tried this. Thanks!

Hi Aaron, thanks for the review! A couple of questions, if I may, do you find the Xpression pedal useful? Also, if you were to. compare this vs NUX Optima Air, which one would you go for an acoustic guitar? Thanks in advance!
@aaronshortmusic3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I personally do not use an expression pedal much these days. There is also a version of this with a built in expression pedal if you need it. It’s not really fair to compare this to the Optima Air as they are very different. If you need all of the effects then get the Zoom, if you want to create your own IR then get the Optima Air or get both of them.
@SashaPak3 жыл бұрын
@@aaronshortmusic thanks a lot! Yeah, I’ve just ordered NUX Optima Air, will see if I can tell the difference between the sound through it and the A1X. If I decide to keep Zoom, I’ll prob change to the smaller version without the pedal to keep it more portable

Hi there. This is the second time I stop by here. You have those K&K preamp and piezo guys installed. Your views are pretty solid rock, and if you are saying the A1 Four is good, man I trust you. I have the Graphtech loaded piezo floyd bridge installed. However I do not have their preamp - the K&K's pop up way much better results than Graphtech's. Are you using the Zoom pedal with or without a preamp? Cheers (Now I know it means "thanks"). PS: that pedal modelling is huge.
@aaronshortmusic3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks for stopping by again! The Zoom pedal is unbeatable for the price. It should not require an additional preamp. I have not tried it with a piezo in an electric guitar yet but I will do.
@hp79373 жыл бұрын
@@aaronshortmusic You must be right about zoom not requiring additional preamp - even though it is not clearly pointed out in their manual. By the way, are you using K&K's preamp? But the A3 input impedance is low for piezo signals - around 470kohms. But maybe it is not low, it is a matter of testing. Higher Impedance is not a problem itself - in fact it always must be higher than the source's output - but manufacturers have set some standards (and you must know them) because way too much impedance comes along with other compromises in the circuit: 1kohm up to 10kohms for mics and pedals/line output; and 1 to 10 Mohms for magnetic/piezo sources. So 470kohms is exaxtly the opposite in the 'higher input impedance' fashion. But I am no engineer and anyone can give zoom a shot :D. Thanks again.
@aaronshortmusic3 жыл бұрын
@H P It’s fine. It essentially is a preamp and even has a setting to change it for a passive magnetic pickup I think. It certainly worked with every pickup I tried with it.

Is it possible to upload FX that are available in Zoom B1 four or G1 four pedals? Can I use it to play the bass or electric guitar?

The A1 does have one electric amp simulation so you could use that. If you want to get more adventurous that it’s worth getting the G1Four as well as it’s more tailored to electric guitar.
