I ordered the A1x four but don't have it yet. I've watched a few videos and downloaded the manuals to be as familiar with the pedal as possible when I get it. I enjoyed your video and subscribed. What's cool about multiple videos is the person emphasizes what is most important to them. One guy addressed how setting up the presets allowed him to use multiple guitars and have presets already configured. Great job. Thank you.

That’s a great point and also a pedal like this does so much that it would tie several videos to cover all of the features!

Hey Aaron, Your passion for this pedal is clear for all to see. I purchased this pedal with the expression pedal around two months ago to run with my saxes and love it. I haven't explored the many effects yet but it has totally transformed my playing and what I have to offer to the audience. Thank you for your help with understanding what you can do with the pedal.

Hi Aaron, I was looking into the Zoom A1 Four pedal and came across your review. You convinced me!!! As a performer I use the Boss VE-2 voice enhancer and Trio+ band creator for looping and drum rythm sequencing. The Zoom A1 is the last gem to complete my gig-board. Instead of using my amp to create reverb and chorus I will have a bucket load of cool effects at the tap of a foot so my guitar will really stand out. Thanks for the effort in putting together this review.

@@aaronshortmusic It's weird when you compare the list of effects of the ZD2 generation of pedals with the older ZDL ones, there's quite a few chorus and reverb options they dropped in the newer pedals (as compared to something like the MS-70 CDR).

I just got mine and I am very pleased. I think this is an amazing value for the money. I attended this primarily for use with my harmonica when I play either acoustic or electric gigs. But it’s great to sing through also.The stock sound bank is excellent, there are extra slots to record your own presets, and you can modify the stock ones. I already have a Zoom 24 track digital recorder and the built-in delays and reverbs and choruses and distortions are all great. On this pedal, I especially love the rotary effect, the chorus effect,and an effect called Sax My Lady, that sounds like a stacked harmony.

THANK YOU for a REAL world review with a REAL guitar with a REAL pick up. I am running a boss looper, a boss super octave and a delay. This could do all this, in one foot print? I used a zoom choir years ago and swear the chorus was the best ever. I bet that is in there too. I love, like me, that because you have all these things, you tell me I don't have to use them or to use them sparingly! I think that comes with experience. Just because it's got 11, does not mean you have to play at 11, even though it is 1 more!

Hey Aaron, great review, I have learned a few new things to try. I use this pedal in my solo shows to back vocals. I am primarily a vocalist and use guitar for accompaniment. Despite the comments about the different AG simulators being all the same - and it may well be the case - and the real effect coming from EQ - what I find is that if I want to do a calypso or latin number, I can select nylon and it gives a subtle suggestion of a nylon sound that works fine, if I want to do a blues number, I can select Blues, same for Country and the Jumbo and Vintage are great for a bit of folk. Some of the pre-sets do not work at all for me and this is where I will go into the app and try some adjustments. Overall, for me, I can get many different sounds out of the same guitar for backing vocals to get variety just by selecting the different AG presets. This is great for a solo vocalist guitar player. I also use a Boss VE-500 which provides harmonies and between the 2 pedals, I have most of what I need.

Hi Aaron, wonderful review, but something of interest maybe to others not mentioned is the SAD LOOPER and no way of removing a bad overdub and also if you wish to loop with drum machine, it only plays back the guitar but not the drums...The effects are great for acoustics but they dropped the ball with the looper..I ended up using a separate looper on the output of Zoom and I can loop with drums and effects...Works nice overall.
@aaronshortmusic
@aaronshortmusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching. Yes the looper isn’t amazing but I have to say that this is an EXTREMELY affordable multi effects pedal so I wouldn’t expect it to have a looper that is as good as a dedicated one. I feel it’s mainly for sound checks and practise. Technology is improving all the time so who knows what the next one will be like!

The short comings of small buttons, for the looper etc was the same issue on the previous pedal the zoom G1ON. It can be fairly easily overcome, by removing the bottom plate and soldering wires on the the pads on the circuit board at the button positions, feed them to a multi-way connector and then make an external foot switch box.

Thank for posting this Aaron. Definitely a great pedal. I think this is really the first “bargain” acoustic effects pedal I’ve come across. Seems like every other multi effect pedal, modeler, etc for acoustic is about twice the price of this one. Also, you didn’t mention that it does also work with your typical 9v adapter. Not perfect by any means, the cabinet is plastic, but it does a great job.

QUESTION: Zoom claims that the Output jack can be used for both "line out" and headphones. I cannot find a "headphones" setting in the manual that would allow the unit to know which output level I want. Does this unit properly support headphones with a correct volume level [as opposed to simply claiming that you can just plug a headphone into a "line out"], and if so how does it know that headphones are connected? I would have thought most people would be interested in different reverb styles or delays, not to mention EQ for mixing in with other band members? I have owned and gigged with a couple of previous generations of these pedals and still have the A2. They are a lovely box of useful tricks and the thing I like most about this A1 Four is ease of use on the edits, plus the 3 band graphic always available. Zoom are doing good work here. Thanks for the review Aaron!

LizardKing0851 Have you achieved that? and how, if i may ask? In a live setting I have been striving for a raw authentic pure acoustic tone for a long, LONG time and still not totally happy with my results, so far the combo that seems to closely recreate the guitars sound I've found is the K&K pure mini and TC Helicon Body Rez (which i was really reluctant to use but) other than an external mic of course but still not quite there. The venues I play are way too noisy for a mic and I've tried many other pickups as well. I was at a local open mic one night and a guy from Philly walked in with a Martin D45 and just plugged right in (no pedals) into a one tower Bose L1 i think it was but it just about knocked me off my seat! Perfect acoustic tone and articulation and from what I could see it had no on board tone/volume. After he finished I asked what pickup he was using and he just said "its a trade secret" and he left! lol

Hi! I personally do not use an expression pedal much these days. There is also a version of this with a built in expression pedal if you need it. Surprised there is so much praise for this pedal. I firstly always listen to units with no effects or modules to start with to see how it compares with with the natural sound of my pick ups & see if there is any 'tone suck'. For me there clearly is with the A1 Four. What do I expect for £100 you may ask & that's a valid argument but the video here makes it sound amazing & for me it really isn't. If your instrument sounds worse with it plugged in before you start adding effects then you're in a losing battle from the start IMO. My guitar has a hexaphonic piezoelectric pickup & a built in condenser mic so it sounds really good. I was hoping this unit would add a bit of reverb, delay, compression & maybe some modulation as well as the built in floor tuner. But it's all useless to me if my guitar sounds worse plugged into it than not & I think It's a pointless exercise trying to retrieve loss of tone through eq. Mine's going back to the shop. I did like the tuner though, it was accurate & the whole thing being super light & small was really appealing. Great video, you sold it to me well.

Hi there. This is the second time I stop by here. You have those K&K preamp and piezo guys installed. Your views are pretty solid rock, and if you are saying the A1 Four is good, man I trust you. I have the Graphtech loaded piezo floyd bridge installed. However I do not have their preamp - the K&K's pop up way much better results than Graphtech's. Are you using the Zoom pedal with or without a preamp? Cheers (Now I know it means "thanks"). PS: that pedal modelling is huge.

@hp7937 3 жыл бұрын
@@aaronshortmusic You must be right about zoom not requiring additional preamp - even though it is not clearly pointed out in their manual. By the way, are you using K&K's preamp? But the A3 input impedance is low for piezo signals - around 470kohms. But maybe it is not low, it is a matter of testing. Higher Impedance is not a problem itself - in fact it always must be higher than the source's output - but manufacturers have set some standards (and you must know them) because way too much impedance comes along with other compromises in the circuit: 1kohm up to 10kohms for mics and pedals/line output; and 1 to 10 Mohms for magnetic/piezo sources. So 470kohms is exaxtly the opposite in the 'higher input impedance' fashion. But I am no engineer and anyone can give zoom a shot :D. Thanks again.

Great review. Convinced me to try one out. I see the input impedance is 480kOhm. I use a K&K Pure Mini pickup on my acoustic. Typically I think K&K suggests something like a 10MOhm input impedance with their systems. Any guesses on how the Zoom will do with the K&K if I don't use a DI or something else with the higher input impedance?
@aaronshortmusic
@aaronshortmusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nate. K&K suggest 1MegOhm. 480k is half of that. It will result in less bass which may be a good thing if you are using a dreadnought. If you have a smaller guitar then you may lack some bass but you can probably just make up for it with EQ. You should be fine!

You asked for feedback from owners of this effects processor so here goes. But first, thanks for posting this. It's the best review of this processor on KZbin, IMO. But when you said you didn't even scratch the surface, you weren't exaggerating because you didn't even sample any of the pre-loaded patches (you call them blocks) except the AG patch to (supposedly) simulate a Martin D-28. The fun really starts when you get past the AG patches or, even better, build your own. There are 39 other pre-loaded patches - 30 beyond the AG patches. You really should do a follow-up video demonstrating the other pre-loaded patches. I think I may have been the very first person to buy one of these when they were released for sale. My order went through early on the morning that they were first released. I posted the very first Amazon review. I have the A1X-Four and I also have since bought the G1X-Four. But I have complaints about these processors. First, the AG patches not only don't simulate the guitars they are supposed to but the equalizer EFFECT in each of the AG patches does absolutely nothing but you can adjust it different than the equalizer in the other AG patches. It's the other effects in the AG patches that make the difference. Don't believe me? Just turn off all the the effects except the equalizer effect in all the AG patches and compare them. They are all the same so why waste the space with 28 AG equalizer EFFECTS that are all the same? They take up a lot of space that could be used to load more effects with they processor's limited memory. So it seems like a good idea to delete them all and just replace them with another of the many equalizers that are available and there are much better equalizers available. (Keep in mind, I'm talking about the AG effects, NOT the patches. It's the effects that take up space.) I pointed this out to Zoom and got the run-around. After going back and forth with them, it was clear that they weren't even reading my emails. They then asked me to send sound samples which I did. I included all the AG patches but with all the effects turned off except the equalizer to compare just the AG equalizers. They were all absolutely identical. Zoom's response was extremely poor. I also have a Zoom H6 digital recorder which I love and I do really like the Zoom effects processors but I'm extremely disappointed with Zoom's customer support. It was terrible. So terrible in fact that I changed my rating to 1 star from 5 stars. That's really not fair, though, because other than than, I do like the effects processors but that's how pissed off I was after Zoom's responses. When I asked a question about the H6 recorder, I never even received a response. \ Mmemory (or rather storage) is my second complaint. It would have been so easy to build these processors with more memory so you could load ALL the effects available. Memory is dirt cheap. User's may become frustrated when they want to download more effects only to find they have to delete existing effects to make space. The amp and cabinet simulators don't simulate those amps and cabinets when you play through an amp so don't expect your 5 watt amp with a 6" speaker to sound like a Fender Bassman with 4 -12" speakers. That should be obvious. Sure, they'll change the sound a bit but they only simulate what they are supposed to simulate when you run them directly into your DAW program or with earphones when bypassing an amp. Or at least, they're supposed to. I don't know because I haven't tried it. So if you only play through an amp, you may want to delete them to make room for more effects. You can reinstall them anytime so don't worry when you uninstall an effect. As for the looper, I added a separate looper that is capable of 10 minute loops and also can upload and download loops via USB from a computer, smartphone, etc., but only in WAV form. This means, for example, that I can load an entire song up as the main loop and play along with it, etc. That said, thank you for very much for mentioning using the looper at the beginning of the effects chain. I remember seeing that in the owner's manual but I never gave it any thought. You really made an excellent point about it's advantages and I'm anxious to try that out. In fact, if I'm thinking correctly, I can just put my stand-alone looper in the front of the signal chain too. Thanks again for this excellent review.
