Hi Shane, great video! I have a suggestion - could you please make audio comparisons the same volume? My brain is wired up to think that louder is better regardless of the tone or effect applied. Keeping things at the same volume would allow me to make more meaningful comparisons. Keep up the good work!

Great video.....thanks! I have my Zoom H1 connected to a Canon Vixia HF R72 (mic input from Canon to Line Out on the Zoom) and used it this past weekend to record my band (rock/hard rock covers) live......I had to bring the Output level on the H1 all the way down to 15 and it was still occasionally hitting the "red line" (camera mic was low at 15-20)......I never thought to touch the input level on the H1 (DUH) but it was up around 50.....I am guessing by pushing that down to 35-40 would have resulted in not having to crank the output all the way down to 15??? Just seemed weird that it was that low......video came out great but audio did not sound as full as I would have expected.....thanks! And now I am thinking is it better to have higher Input/lower Output or vice versa?????
@taurus39736 жыл бұрын
Joe Venezia Depending on the camera, the line out of the Zoom is usually too hot for the mic-in on the camera. If you get an attenuator cable from Amazon (Sescom -35 dB attenuator, 1/8 inch to 1/8 inch), that takes care of the problem. Often, camera preamps are noisy, so it’s better to have lower gain on the camera. But you always want your record levels to max around -6 dB to get a healthy signal which also avoids distorting.

@taurus39736 жыл бұрын
Just happened to view this vid and saw your question. The answer is yes, normally one would record both on the Zoom and the DSLR, creating two recordings. The Zoom version is going to be at a higher resolution, but you might decide that the DSLR version is close enough that you can use it and avoid the hassles of syncing afterward. Also, if you’re using the Zoom version, and manually syncing it to the video afterward, having the camera version makes it easier to line up the 2 audio versions and synch more quickly and accurately.

how much memory you need for 1 hour of sound in wav?
@FinalManaTrigger5 жыл бұрын
I know this is way late, but for reference I can get 3 hours, 46 minutes of audio in .wav format at 24bit 96kHz (highest quality) on my 8GB micro SD. If you went down to CD quality you could get over 12 hours! So for a full hour at highest quality you'd definitely want at least a 4GB card. The 2GB card it came with doesn't quite get you a full hour of 24/96.

Would this work well for a live concert (Billy Joel) specifically and a few other major artists? Or do you think something cheaper would work well too?
@intheblues8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Conway It'll record an honest representation of what you're hearing but if the mix is bad, the recording is bad. If the mix is great, the recording is great. If you're hearing a lot of echo then the recording will hear that too. Hope this helps :)

Hey, do you know if I can use this unit to connect to the output of my PA system to record what I'm playing through there? It's just digital piano and vocals, but it would mean I can get the levels and reverb sorted on the PA system and record as is... Would it work? Thanks :)
@SamuellaMusic8 жыл бұрын
+David Meghnagi Depending on your desk's available outputs, you may have a mini 3.5mm stereo out which would be perfect as the H1's mic input is a mini-jack. All you would need is a stereo aux cable and you'll catch all the PA signal. Alternatively; the H4n model would provide you with a 2 track balanced XLR interface meaning you can plug in one ambient room mic (for the room's acoustics or to pick up those non-mic'd up guitar amps) and one from your mixer's output. For just piano and guitar through a PA, the H1 would be more than adequate - and at almost half the price of the H4n.
@davmeg8 жыл бұрын
Sam Hansen thanks. I bought one in the end to test it (can always return if no good). It does pick up the signal but it's not really doing the job - the quality is pretty bad and it seems to pick up weird noises from somewhere. Recording quality just using the inbuilt mics is really good though, so may just record from my speakers directly on to the device. Thanks for your advice.
