Zoom H1e review. Is it worth buying or not ? On balance yes, it's a good upgrade to the older H1n. Sure it has its quirks as do a few Zoom products, but at $100 bucks it's a no brainer for an every day carry recorder.

Will you be buying the H1e ? 'Let me know below. Or maybe the new H4e or H6e. Interesting releases from Zoom for sure, but not without a few usual Zoom "brain farts" they seem so fond of recently. Still, for the 90 bucks I paid, I'm pretty happy.

THANK you for your video ..... Do you think it is possible to raise the INPUT LEVELS , somehow ? (i am not talking about the output levels which can be adjusted) Thank you for your time.

Hi. Thanks for watching and commenting. To answer your question, no it's not possible to raise the gain of the microphones. You would do that in post-production using audio software to normalise the levels to your desired result.

Hi, just doing some research on this recorder to use to capture motorcycle exhaust noise and possibly dialogue from within a helmet. If I was to plug a lav mic in and record dialogue would I also be able to still record off the X/Y mics and have the lav mic audio and X/Y audio captured on seperate tracks to be able to play around with in post? Thanks
@lookingforsounds
@lookingforsounds Ай бұрын
Hey mate. No, unfortunately not. Plugging-in a Lav mic or any mic into the 3.5mm input cuts out the in-built X/Y mics. It's only a 2 channel recorder, so you can't use both.

audio quality is same right? but h1e just have bigger sd card and 32 bit right? other wise if i put a mic in there its gonna sound the same or is it different in gain ?
@lookingforsounds
@lookingforsounds 6 ай бұрын
Not sure if the audio quality is the same yet. I did want to get out this week and do a comparison with the H1n but the weather turned bad. Will try again this weekend if it's OK. As I understand it, the inbuilt mics were upgraded too. You can easily use an external mic, but the signal may well be higher or lower than the onboard mics, but with 32bit you should be covered for clipping.

Good to hear it isn't just me. I don't like it one bit, and the fact that you can't even change it to the reverse is also very annoying. Good job I don't go into the menus of the H1e very often. Anyway, thanks so much for watching and commenting. Appreciate it.

Great video. Very informative! Currently i am using the H1n to record live shows in my city. So far im happy with the audio quality (as long as i get a good mic placement in the venue) but setting and adgusting the correct gain on the fly is a hassle. When i discovered the new Essential series the 32-bit feature sold me inmediatly. For my porpuses the 32-bit seems a neccesity. Also, the bluetooth capabilities on the H4e and H6e seem very appealing. I dont see mayor issues for my case. I think i will be upgrading soon.

Thanks Miguel. A 32bit recorder would be perfect for your use. Probably the H4 or H6 so you can use multiple microphones to capture your shows.

An interesting date bug, i'm sure they'll bring out some new firmware to sort that out shortly. Glad you pointed out some of the issues of pre-record too, not that I would use it myself, I don't think. I've got one coming in 4 days (March 6th) so looking forward to testing it anyway with our SR3D Basic binaural capturing device.

Thanks so much for commenting. I know they're small bugs or annoyances, but for me the menu system is so so so simple that I have to shake my head at how anyone can f*** it up, let alone a huge electronics company. I sometimes wonder if Zoom do any testing at all. Anyway, with that said it's been a super little recorder so far. I'm very happy indeed (except for the pre-record nonsense) and I'm sure you will be happy too. I've seen your binaural mics many times in online videos, so I'll sub to your channel and look out for your review. Cheers for stopping by.

@@lookingforsounds Many thanks for the sub! I hope to do a video on binaural audio, I've already got one up there, but the binaural "cubes" were using much bigger mics, and they didn't work that well, so aim to do better in my next one. I believe that there is much confusion with binaural microphones, so I'm hoping to address that from my very opinionated understanding about them, as I realised how to record binaural cues through brainstorming rather than looking it up or researching it. Have a look for "The time preservation society" he did a little feature on my SR3D Basic mic (he called it the DIY Kit which is incorrect), but they all do the same thing! Going to sub you back, and no doubt I'll eventually do something with the new recorder, as because if they are more simple to use with my devices, the better!
@lookingforsounds
@lookingforsounds 6 ай бұрын
@@sr3d-microphones Cheers. I watch Time Preservation Society, so no doubt I also saw your mics there. You use Clippys (EM272) don't you ? Sadly my only experience with binaural is with the Roland CS-10EM headphone/mic, and I found them pretty useless and not great due to tons of cable noise and the speaker output bleeding back into the mic causing a feedback loop effect. I had to eventually unplug the headphone cable to prevent that. But I do really love that idea of binaural stealth recording using a headphone-like setup. I was meaning to give the Sound Professionals set a go, but I've been a bit put off by my experience with the Rolands.
@sr3d-microphones
@sr3d-microphones 6 ай бұрын
@@lookingforsounds Yes, I use the EM272 capsules, but headphones with mics on the ends are not binaural, any mics without an ear are not binaural, which is one of the things i'll be trying to put out there on the video, it's all to do with the pinna, as without the pinna, we hear everything inside our heads! I do think that there's far too much confusion over stereo/binaural, and really I'd love to see a new category of microphone class, not named as microphones, but binaural capturing devices, as they are completely different beasts! In a simple way, standard microphones capture direct sound, whereas binaural microphones capture reflected sounds, all to do with the ears, there is sort of a direct path to the ear canal, but there's ridges and folds in the way, so It's still binaural, once the concept of true binaural is realised it opens up a whole new world. I sent this to Nathan recently, but he's still not seen it I don't think, but it's an ongoing video edit I'm working on regarding binaural audio and how it's being confused with dogmatic writings about what it is, in my opinion. What do you think? it's unlisted kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnzaaqeKbNOHo6s

@@sr3d-microphones Sure, I get what you're saying. It's no accident that the human ear evolved to what it is today. And obviously for a very good reason. So yes, I get that a headphone/mic doesn't capture any reflections. It's basically no different to using "tree ears" in field recordings with different spacings to create stereo separation. So yes, I admit that I was also mislead by the true meaning of binaural. It obviously goes way beyond the very basic and simplistic idea of two mics separated by the width of a human head with a solid object in between. I guess that belief is really no different from using a Jecklin Disk. So I suppose the real question is, just how different is the sound from a true binaural setup and a "fake" headphone setup ? Is it really that big ?

The sounds at the end (and this is in the recorders XY microphones, not you) were midtone, not much in high and low. But for $130 CAD, we can't really expect much. On the other hand, for $130 you do get something "decent" or "ok", something that might work for reference sounds or non-serious sound gathering unless of course you add a good microphone, this should improve the sound significantly. Would be interesting...
@lookingforsounds
@lookingforsounds 6 ай бұрын
Sure, the mics used were the inbuilt XY for all the sounds at the end. The sound will improve a lot with external mics and I hope to test this soon and make a video. As you say, for 100 bucks you're never going to get an amazing machine, but I find it perfect for an "every day carry" device in my pocket/backpack when I hear something interesting outside.

@lookingforsounds
@lookingforsounds 4 ай бұрын
Both seem great , but all depends on whether you plan to buy some XLR mics in future. If you do, the H4e is the no-brainer choice for the money. Personally I like to have both sizes of recorder - the smaller H1e for my jacket pocket, and my H6 and my F3 for when I need external mics.

@lookingforsounds I never used an XLR Mic. So can one plug into the Zoom H4e and then can I do a line out into a camera to get the audio from the XLR mic?
@lookingforsounds
@lookingforsounds 3 ай бұрын
@@thomasusheriii971 Sorry for the late reply. Yes, the H4e will take 2 external XLR mics and records 4 channels (inbuilt stereo mics + 2 XLR at the same time), and you will be able to audio-out to a camera. So it's up to you whether you want to get the H4e for the future in case you want these options.
