just bought this and it's fantastic! 10 minutes to understand and learn the basics, now it's just a matter of getting used to handling the files in post, but there's youtube videos already for that!

The ZOOM H3-VR is a great concept but the unit itself is sound active. Any time you touch the unit controls, or even carrying, it it easily picks up handling noise. It is definitely a mic stand needed device. Set it up, set it's record functions and put it into record mode ... then walk away and let it do its' thing. Sound is reasonable for the money but due to the handling noise it is too bad that the microphone capsules aren't better isolated from the plastic body of the unit.

I just watched the accompanying live band video and it was awesome! Very cool recorder. I've had a Zoom H2 for years so maybe it's time to upgrade.

Can you use it to record 5 people in a room and get a good sound ?
@BandH5 жыл бұрын
Certainly! I would expect the 5 subjects to be within 2 to 8 feet of this recorder for the best results. >Mark

Any chance you can record a 2 or 3 person table interview with it? Interested in how it deals with human voice at a slight distance.

Great idea! Should work very well, depending upon the ambient noise and room conditions. >Mark

Two questions, (both of which literally nobody has been able to answer) #1 When is it available? #2 Is the mic intergratable with Logic ?
@mwsbs6 жыл бұрын
Larry Salzman it is now available at B&H. The files are compatible with Logic. If you’re going to use it for VR/360° video, check out the Facebook 360 program/plug-in that will work with Adobe premiere and Final Cut Pro.

What's the point of this? Is it just for surround sound, or does it offer anything better/different than an omnidirectional microphone for just stereo output? FYI there's no trumpet video popping up in the upper right at 2:52.

Ambisonic mics record sound with four directional capsules separately to four tracks. You can then use this 4-channel audio conventionally while editing to create 'virtual microphones'. These "virtual microphones" can only exist at the point in space of the ambisonic mic, but may each exhibit any polar pattern and direction you wish. Simply put, you can use an ambisonic mic to generate mono, coincident stereo (XY, Blumlein, Mid-Side, pseudo-Binaural), all the way up to 5.1 and even beyond in some software, all from that original 4-channel audio. Once again, all of this may be done and re-done non-destructively in post. In addition, you can then come back even years later to your ambisonic recordings and completely 're-mix' the settings to taste or necessity. Stereo mix too wide? Just rotate the pair of virtual mics so they are at less of an angle. Too much hi-hats and not enough kick? Just rotate the virtual mics downwards a little more. Too much room? Make the virtual mic(s) more cardioid and less omni. Your client call and decide they want a 5.1 mix for film licensing? Click a button. That's the benefit to using ambisonics in a conventional workflow- full editing power over your mic characteristics years later, from a single mic & stand. Keeping in mind that this Zoom is 1/3rd the price of the nearest competitor, it will be interesting to see what they achieve for this price.

A production issue prevented the pop-up Jeremy. Sorry to disappoint. Sam Gossner (below) offers a splendid explanation of the benefits of the Ambisonic mic array that would be hard to supplement. Thanks Sam. Perfect! >Mark
