Cheers, Matthew. I got my L12 a couple of months back, but had bloody bastard driver issues with my old imac running high sierra. I upgraded to a nice new mac mini running Catalina last week, and just got around to installing the L12 drivers last night. Suddenly, the whole thing works perfectly in Live 10. I can select either the L12 or my Scarlett 2i4 as either input or output, and all my synths plugged into the L12 are audible exactly as they should be in whichever configuration. Now I can finally use what you showed in this video and get my template set up in Live. Thanks again.

the zoom livetrak is NOT a DAW control surface. I see so many people asking the same question.. it's not going to control your pro tools, your logic, you're ableton, you're fruity tooty loops nor reaper. Y'all are thinking of the zoom R16 for that. Livetrak is primarily for live tracking either to a DAW or SD card. Could be both a studio and live mixer. For mixing and mastering, it doesn't use any protocols like Mackie's hui control...so it ain't gonna control the faders in your DAW

Can you do a video on how to route tracks from MPC LIVE into the zoom L12, Im not getting any sound...I dont want to use synths or anything I just want to use the faders
@TheLordcasio2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for this. A couple of questions/comments. Firstly, can you do a video where you use the L12 as an external sound card for the Live? Next, does the L12 (or any L series Zoom) work as a DAW controller (faders/transport) and/or can a DAW control the faders and transport of the L12....is there any MIDI implementation on the L12 at all? You keep mentioning "gain staging", but you also had the Moog output at 3 O'clock and the Zoom L20 input gain at the lowest setting. Typical "gain staging logic" would dictate that you share the gain duty between the two devices. Granted, Zoom preamps are not considered as "desirable", but my question to you is...why did you set it up like that? Did you get bad results or maybe you thought this was a bad idea? I do not use Ableton Live, but I was curious about your latency settings. You read the overall latency, adjusted the track latency compensation, THEN you added Guitar Rig. Plug ins add additional latency. If you were to check your system latency in Ableton AFTER adding Guitar Rig, would that additional latency be shown? Sort of a non-issue, as your guitar track appeared to be spot on, but I find it interesting...academically. I had the Tascam Model 12 and ran it through its paces with the MPC Live, but I really like the digital mixer functionality of the L Series...it's just that there seems to be no sync/MIDI with the L Series. If you can shed any light on wether that is accurate, that'd be rad.
@nickloss237710 ай бұрын
yeah he didn't gain stage correctly. you always want to ensure every device in the chain is outputting a hot signal (not too hot that you're close to clipping, just hot as in you're maximizing the signal and minimizing the noise). so on the L12, he should have adjusted the gain until the 'signal' led changed from green and started flashing red (clip indicator). as soon as you see the red, you back down on the gain about a 1/4 turn so that the LED is back to flashing green.. and back down a little bit more to give some headroom. he should have done that on his other devices too BEFORE adjusting the gain in Ableton. in this use case, it didn't make much of an audible difference because he was using a small number of very low noise devices. But even though we couldn't hear the noise, the recorded signal would have been unnecessarily noisy and less than prestine. funny thing is, a lot of people would not notice the noise and would argue that it sounded just fine.. but then if I was to properly gain stage them for a second recording, the improvement in sound quality and fidelity would have been very noticeable. also your question about latency and syncing is interesting because the L12 does have a "metronome" function deep in its menu. I believe the zoom people only implemented this for a click track, but if they had really wanted to, they could have probably added some degree of midi capability--at least for reading incoming clock data... I mean any1 that has taken a screwdriver to their livetrak and opened her up would have seen the amount of free space inside. adding a mini controller board even for full control surface capability would have easily been possible. but of course it probably came down to a marketing and business decision. didn't want to cannibalize the consumer market for their updated R16 model--which came out after the L12

Hey Mathew. Can the L12 receive a MIDI clock signal to start recording? Basically, I have a bunch of synths that are MIDI sequenced. If I want to overdub a sequenced synth later onto the SD card, the recording has to start at the same time as the previous tracks so they all line up. How do you set the L12 to start recording when your sequencer starts playing? Thank you for the help. Great videos!
@DjFille2 жыл бұрын
play a LTC timecode track from your L-12 to your sequencer... and sync your sequencer to that. In reaper it can be done directly; in cubase you need a third party program because it can only sync to midi timecode, so you need a program called Timecode expert which converts the LTC timecode to Midi timecode. et voila...

Hi-Z (or High Z, or High Impedance) is the type of signal an electronic guitar produces. It is different than line or mic level. You can record a guitar with a mixer that doesn't have Hi-Z as an option, but, it will not sound nearly as good. Some mixers or interfaces will have it labeled as instrument.

Man, this video was perfect, as I have had an L-12 sitting around the studio for a while and hardly used it. I just now get it all connected as you did but my biggest question is HOW do I enable/ use the actual FADERS on the L-12 to effect the incoming volume in Ableton? For example, right now I have a Moog One playing a sequence into the L-12 and it's volume (on channel one) is turned ALL THE WAY DOWN, however on the channel one strip in Ableton, it's showing a constant volume but I can only hear it buy turning the fader up, which is what I want, but what I don't understand is why it's not adjusting the input level going into Ableton which almoist makes it pointless for me to use the mixer if the faders won't actually mix/ effect the volumes going in! Please help! Have you encountered this or know of a way to make the mixer work AS a mixer and only allow audio into Ableton when the sliders are in the appropriate levels? Sorry for the long ramble, it's consumed my entire morning and it's killing me I can't figure out how to use the fares to adjust the volume getting recorded/ on playback!
@richarquis4 жыл бұрын
If you watch some of the other videos on the product, they point out that the recorded input includes only what's above the blue line, so the gain and compression. They are otherwise recorded as is, and can be mixed later. During the performance, any alterations made to volume or fx will be heard through the live mix, or into the master out recording, but will not register in the individual track recordings. To recap - After gain and compression, individual channels record raw signals, while the master also records volume and fx. If you go back to your sd card recording, the master file will feature the parameter changes, but the individual track channels will not. They can be edited thereafter.

Quick question. I have around 5 instruments, groove boxes, sound modules etc., Can they be plugged into the Mic/Line inputs on the mixer. If so I will have to use mono for each. Is it ok to record in mono or should it always be done in stereo. Just wondering before I purchased the L-12 as I may not have enough inputs for stereo. Thanks in advance
@MatthewStratton5 жыл бұрын
Hello, the Zoom L-12 is a"12-channel digital mixer (8 mono/2 stereo)". The inputs 1-8 are all mono. 9/10 and 11/12 are stereo. If you have a guitar that you want to plug directly into it you should use input 1 or 2 because there is a "Hi-Z" button to change the impedance. 1-8 can be balanced or unbalanced. The stereo inputs are unbalanced TS or RCA. If you have more than 2 stereo modules I suppose you could use 2 mono inputs and Pan one hard left for the left output of your module and Pan the other hard right for the right output of your module. Either way you look at it even if all your instruments and sound modules were stereo that would equal 10 inputs needed and the L-12 has 12 inputs, so you should be fine.

Could this work on the zoom r16?

I'm a Studio One 4 user. Will it work equally as well or does the Zoom line work multi track only for the Ableton users?
@MatthewStratton4 жыл бұрын
It works Multitrack for any software that can use ASIO drivers. Pretty sure Studio One can but double check if it can.

What happens if you move the physical faders? Will they move in ableton as well?
@MatthewStratton3 жыл бұрын
No, they do not control ableton. The control the live mix on the mixer.

Why not use Ableton link with the MPC Live? Less cables

Can you sync the MPC Live and L12 in standalone mode and have one control the stop/play/record functions of the other?
@MatthewStratton4 жыл бұрын
Hello. No. There is no way to sync them, which is a real bummer. That is something the Tascam model 12 got right with being able to send the midi clock. amzn.to/2KQnaXs I still need to test it out.

i have an issue with Ableton and my mixer and i couldn’t figure that out, in Ableton its either hearing and record my hardware synth but not the software instrument, or hear and record the software instrument but not able to hear anything from the mixer. im using Berhinger qx1002usb as audio interface and my input for the synth hardware i have, is there a solution for this? or do i need to get a separate recorder and only record the master out of the mixer?

Can you compare it to Allen and Heath Sq5?
@mrpookies15 жыл бұрын
what do you actually need the zoom L12 for if your recording using Ableton a 4 channel audio interface would suffice
@MatthewStratton5 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are doing. I have used 11 tracks at once with the L-12. This videos shows how you can possibly set up the L-12 to use many tracks to give people ideas.

ive installed my l-12 driver but ableton just keeps saying failed to open asio driver zoom l-12

Why do you use Ablerton instead of MPC2 Software?
@MatthewStratton5 жыл бұрын
The MPC is way better in standalone in my opinion. Ableton has things like deley compensation for plug ins. Last time I check mpc software does not. MPC software needs more development.

Matthew Stratton ok thx,hopefully they will make it a full complete DAW having to switch between MPC software and another DAW is to time consuming for me.

Great Video! Can you connect the Zoom's USB to the MPC Live directly using the new MPC 2.8 update? I am considering buying a Zoom L12 if it can, or is the Tascam Model 12 better at midi syncing with the MPC?

Does zoom livetrak l-12 work with fl studio?
@MatthewStratton5 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tested it, but I know fl studio can use ASIO drivers on windows and core audio on MAC. So you should be fine because Zoom uses ASIO drivers.
