zoom R4 recording multiple takes

The Zoom R4 multitrack recorder is awesome, but there are steps you need to take to prevent overwriting your previous track recorings.

I found your channel via this video. Your harp work is amazing! I’m just a beginner and I’ve done some guitar/vocal recording on this Zoom R4, but I’m thinking about doing some bass guitar and harmonica songs. Setup would be xlr out from my bass amp and shaker xlr mic direct to Zoom R4. I don’t own a harp mic yet, so what do you think about this setup? Thanks!

Sounds good to me. One great feature of the Zoom R4 is the 32bit float, so if an input is too hot or too low you can normalize and not lose anything. As far as mics for harmonica, I like the Hohner HB52, but I also use a Sennheiser e904 drum mic as well. Many of my harmonica covers are recorded using a Rode NT1A condenser mic. I've had it for years and originally chose it for its sound on vocals.

How do you actually delete the track if you don't want it though? I understand that when you "clear track" its removing it from the channel but when I go to the project all of my takes are there and I don't want all of them. When I look at the files on the SD card there are SO many takes there and all I want is the one I like. Do I have to manually delete them from the SD card after sorting through all of them and finding the one I like?

If you record a take and you know it is not a keeper, just rewind and record again. That will overwrite the previous take. You only need to clear the track if you want to keep it from being overwritten.

How do you put it in your Daw?

2 ways. You can either hook up a usb data cable and put the R4 into file transfer mode. Or you can remove the micro SD card and attach it to your computer to transfer the individual tracks.
