As someone studying to become a computer engineer myself, I am very against the way technology is used today, the way we have become dependent on it and the way it's becoming more and more centralized. I believe technology should be used minimalistically and only when it's necessary. Websites should work like static records to learn and study from when you have no printed source available, not to obsessively chat and like photographs like a maniac or watch porn all day. It's incredibly annoying how newer technology has come to represent materialism and hedonism, even though it could very easily be just a tool for us to educate ourselves, compute and communicate. What's even more annoying is how I am expected, because of my interest in the field, to be ideologically aligned and totally on board with this insane and immoral process of dependency and addiction.
@thehalchannel90364 жыл бұрын
As a CS student, I find this frightening because of how relatable it is. Same here, because I am constantly being told by alot of people (6/10 times its boomers who are doe eyed about the future and basically watched the Jetsons growing up) that "ohh man duude you have to get into Machine Learning and AI developemet. Dude, you have to progress the world by learning all JS libraries that slow down websites tremendously". Its really annoying. Like once I said I didnt like Tiktok and I wanted nothing to do with it, another person responded with, "why not??? Having tiktok is beneficial for especially if you are in CS. Its because its mOdErN tEcHnoLogY and its inNvaTivE. ". Fml

There is so much encouragement to do harmful shit to our world as STEM majors. Its kind of jarring
@generalmichaelconstantine45984 жыл бұрын
@@thehalchannel9036 It may appear that it's just on STEM, but this tendency is something that's been growing in all subjects and fields of study. Education has become filled with the sick ideas of materialism, which itself is part of nihilism. I'm hoping that as a CS major, my voice regarding the dangers of the way we handle technology will be heard. I'm hoping that the next generation of CS majors can start a movement of decentralization and minimalism regarding computers. Computers are a tool - we can use them to arm ourselves with knowledge and share ideas the way e.g Luke Smith is doing right now. We can also let it be the means through which we will become more and more consumerist pawns in the board game of international mega-corporations. It's literally on our hands and I'm optimistic that we will overcome this degeneracy.
@MrCmon1134 жыл бұрын
If you are not "dependent" on a technology, it's useless. You are dependent on your clothes, house, the expertise of thousands of other people and the machines and tools they use as well as the infrastructure. And that's a good thing. If you are never willing to trust anything whatsoever, if you are never willing to be dependent on others, you will never get anywhere. One should think that a computer engineer would understand that, but education is not the same as wisdom. As for your lament that software isn't sufficiently fascist, I can only say that the world you desire would be boring beyond comprehension.
@MrCmon1134 жыл бұрын

Independence is definitely a virtue. Independence does not mean becoming a recluse. If we look at the dictionary definition: "Independence: the ability to live your life without being helped or influenced by other people." The ability. Being able to survive on your own, then choosing to co-operate with others if that's what you wish. A person who isn't independent isn't in charge of those decisions. He can be forced to become dependent. That's quite literally the origin of the word IN-DEPENDENT.

Funny how life walks in circles, a couple years ago i watched Varg Vikernes's videos, eventually started getting desinterested on them and moved on, then i started getting into health and fitness, learned about keto, than carnivores, than the raw meat crowd with channels like sv3rige and such, those guys advocated to a similar "primitive" life style that varg did, with sv3rige even mentioning varg directly. Than fast foward a year or so and i decide i want to be a programmer, start learning some basics, learn about Linux and the whole open source movement in general and, by chance, find this channel, fast foward to today and is almost like everything is tying up in a nice little bow, everything ends up somehow leading back to this very same topic one way or another.

People addicted to some technological system are a lot like people facing substance abuse and I think they should be treated in the same way. An alcoholic that fully understands how his drinking is damaging his life or those of others around him is able to re evaluate his decision whether or not to drink every time he picks up a bottle. Within the first few paragraphs of ISAIF TK presents the idea of the "Power Process" This is direct personal action to Feed clothe and shelter oneself and family. When the power process is passed on to someone else whether it be other persons Governments or masters, the pschological effect on the individual is a negative because the mind understands that there is interdependence instead of independence, and so the individual is marked by his/her personal vulnerability. Actions of daily life are defined as surrogate activities. The more a society and individual rest in Surrogate activities, the less stable "Healthy" the indivudual is.

I'm gonna give a generic recommendation: be as independent as you can without compromising on your own comfort (what you view as "good" or "useful"). It's ok to be dependent on others to some extent, that is what economic specialization (ie division of labor) is. Just make sure you aren't completely dependent on others to live. You can always live without a TV, without soy-lattes and without the internet, but make sure you have all the essentials to survive for a long period of time (a roof over your head, some land, enough savings, food and water reserves and what not many people are thinking about, a good human waste disposal device to avoid contacting potential diseases, those that can be avoided). You can have an internet connection if you find it useful in your life (I use it to research all kinds of stuff, especially DYI stuff that can improve my life), you can have an electric screwdriver if it makes your life easier, you can have a solar panel if you make use of electricity, but never compromise on your basics, those "things" that you need for survival that may be unavailable during some crises.

And, if we are talking about a democratic representative goverment it's worse, cause you have a bunch of idiots making stupid laws thinking that they are a VITAL part of the human society, politicians thinks that the world without them is imposible and just stupid. These days i've started thinking again about the consequences of technology. Technology and computers will always be an hobby for me, but i started being more aware about what internet/3W became in the time: watching Serial Experiments Lain the first time made me think a lot about internet (and the author predicted what would have become), then i read "Why the future doesn't need us" from Bill Joy (contributed to BSD, and founded Sun Microsystems) where he talks about risks of pushing development of technology too far (he reflected also about the essay of Kazcynski) and when we should stop (so, ask ourselves if it's worth investing in a technology and which consequences could have), and these days i listened to lessons about Cyber-Security (in particular IT law in Italy) where learnt about the impact of technology today and how we are going to rely on it, and why we are at risk (attackers are more advantaged than defenders). I can also say that Ken Thompson (God itself and father of UNIX) talked about interesting things: _trusting trust_ attacks (backdoors that are very hard to detect, and backdoors that are hidden and nobody knows of. Famous his phrase: "You cannot trust programs you didn't create yourself"), the rise of cloud computing ("operating systems will disappear for how bad they're maintained... the future will be a screen shipped over a wire") and concerns about it, the growth of complexity in computing. I realized that people today have access to very powerful tools, and they can use them without little knowledge (user-friendliness is what actually enables them, even little kids and monkeys would be able to use a smartphone) and do harmful things to themselves and others. I still think that technology is neutral, and it's something that can be used to make our life easier or make it harder and hurt ourselves.
