If it came with windows 8, then try installing windows 8 pro on it and it should self activate even if there is no product key sticker. Since windows 8, the product key is tied to the UEFI, so if Linux doesn’t turn out well, that’s an option that may work.

Ameqsis ok WHAT world are you living on that Windows 10 is better for worse cpus and less ram than Windows 8.1? In my testing, Windows 8 is king of worse CPUs and less ram. Granted if you have an ivy bridge or newer with 8 GB of ram, it probably doesn’t matter, but if your still rocking that pentium 4 or that core duo from 2007 with 3GB of ram, then your better off with Windows 8

highvoltage12v wow, really? I have an HP Folio 9480m that shipped with Windows 8, the OS was wiped when I got it so I reinstalled windows 10 and it activated just fine, I figured windows 8 would do the same thing and run better on this low-end machine
@evancrazyerror6 жыл бұрын
highvoltage12v if Windows 8 detects a valid product key in the uefi, it will continue with setup as usual. Even if there isn’t, there are a plethora of Windows 8 keys online that are legit as they let you past setup but don’t let you activate the OS. I’m guessing they’re backdoors from Microsoft that we’re left in intentionally.
@ExiledDiclonius6 жыл бұрын
When you insert usb bootdrive with windows, you will not even need to enter any key. Windows will auto fill it up, you wont even see any screen related to it (as long as you have key saved on your mobo).. If it had windows 8 then it should be possible to simply skip it and try windows 10. At least in case of my X230 i wasted 5 bucks on windows 10 activation code just to realise that it auto used serial key for windows 8 on motherboard (like a year after free upgrade ended)

To explain, I want my desktop to be like only wallpaper is showing and any guest cannot access my Menu or taskbar unless I call the menu bar and taskbar with a command. Eg: Sudo show or call menu bar. after accessing my Menu or taskbar I can hide it again by maybe Eg: Sudo Hide or disappear menu or taskbar. What I meant by "how basic that is done". There is a presentation on it on the ccctv channel from a congress years ago. IRC they tried root passwords and found something comically simple like toor, if you go from there its really not hard to install anything, as they just heavily modified one of the standard distros instead of going from LFS or Arch. Plus they packaged software in their own .app format which is not locked by any signing mechanism.

I know this vid is a few months old however, your question of what could be considered a 64 bit system.. Intel Core 2 Duo and after, and the Athlon 64 and after can be run on a 64 bit OS, if you are running or plan to run more than 3.25GB of RAM then you will want to use a 64 bit OS, as even though the OS may see more than 3.25gb it wont use the excess.. also if your laptop had Windows 8 on it preinstalled the license will be installed on the bios, you an install windows without a key and once its done itll automatically activate with the OEM key that is stored on the bios.

Windows 10 will still install and activate using the Windows 8 key. (Key is installed on a chip on the motherboard). The ISO is easily found on.MS website.
@maaifoediedelarey43356 жыл бұрын
So will Win 8, which is vastly preferable to Win 10 (it absolutely f@cks up everything you install with it's forced updates, fills up your SSD and give you BSOD 4 x per day) - I downloaded latest Win 8 drivers for the hardware, cut the ISO from the MS website, went back to Win 8 which the AIO PC came out with originally, it read the serial from the m/board firmware automatically, installed smoothly, everything just works, a year later, never been happier.
@hanro506 жыл бұрын
Linux works better on cheaper hardware. Since you don't really need an antivirus which absolutely makes these machines borderline unusable. Also Windows can skrew with older bioses, which has happened to me twice.
@maaifoediedelarey43356 жыл бұрын
Hanro50 Yes, Win 10 is optimised for UEFI, not a good idea on any older PC. Actually, I really gave Linux a go, installed Zorin (it created its own partition and auto dual boot), though I couldn't get my wifi Internet connection going, so after I battled for quite a while I just gave up (pity, since I liked the idea of it) - then I went back to Win 8.
@hanro506 жыл бұрын
Maaifoedie De La Rey Might I suggest giving some other distros a go? My recommendations are Mint, Manjaro XFCE or Solus. Different distros behave differently to certain hardware configurations. I had a laptop where I couldn't get its Integrated graphics card to work with Mint, but it worked out of the box with Antergos.

Oof, you went for the GNOME Based one? Oof, I will tell you this and tell you it now... Zorin OS consumes MORE RAM than Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 in my experience, and IMO (when using GNOME) is SLOWER than my OS is (when using Cinnamon), and that's extraordinary since they're both seemingly just as heavy as one-another for Core Zorin OS VS Stock Feren OS... not that I'm trying to self-plug, I'm just proving a point that Zorin OS's Devs really need to look at Core's Abnormally High RAM Usage by default. Good Luck with your device running Core... I'd just go Lite IMO, it looks quite similar, yet is XFCE, and it doesn't have the abnormally high RAM usage. BTW, for reference, the Zorin OS in question on this comment is 12.2 Core. Don't get me wrong though, I like Zorin OS... Though I do miss the Zorin OS from pre-12, and its style... and heck, it's, pretty noticeably, inspired a few kinks of Feren OS, but IMO since they went to GNOME, they've lost their way a noticeable bit with Zorin OS and its identity, and what makes it 'Zorin OS'...
@KarlHamel6 жыл бұрын
The Feren OS Dev I don't know much about Zorin, but I know anything Gnome 3 would not have been the right choice here. XFCE, LXDE or Openbox would have been so much better. Personally I would have put a WM instead of a DE, but I get that not everybody would feel comfortable with getting something so different.
@ThatLinuxDude6 жыл бұрын
Karl Hamel The weird facts are that both Zorin OS's DE used to just be Compiz, Nautilus Desktop, and AWM, and that despite doing barely anything in addition to GNOME 3 that meets the eye, it still uses More RAM than Ubuntu GNOME did, AFAIK.
@1menatbpe6 жыл бұрын
Try sparky Linux gameover edition. Uses way less than zorin almost as much as Kali Linux which is next to nothing. Like 6-700MB of ram on startup (only tried 2016.2 and 2017.3 or something like that.)

So, a little hint for the name of the OS ... Zorin Is the name of a James Bond villain called Max Zorin, played by the unique Christopher Walken and by the late Sir Roger Moore, in The Living Daylights ... It was the last movie for him, since he need doubles for running, since he was already in his late 50's ... Also, one of the Bond Girl is Grace Jones, who was a sort of bodyguard to Walken's Character ... Even though this is 2 years old, I leave here the trivia here, for those who can get the reference ...

You could use dd command for creating bootable USB drive. BTW, it is turquoise, the color that you mentioned as Sci-Fi_ish. ZorinOS seems to be using GNOME desktop environment which tries to change screen brightness smoothly. I don't think there is a sensor for adjusting screen brightness automatically. Layouts you were choosing for taskbar and start menu. 3rd one is full screen menu for spotlight like app search bar, switching workspaces etc. Some libraries were getting replaced during update. That is probably why Minesweeper couldn't show numbers, it probably couldn't load some library or font. GNOME keyring is used by browsers to encrypt their cookies. Weird thing is once you enter your password to login it supposed to be entered for keyring too. At least it works that way on Ubuntu. It asks for password if auto-login (login without entering password) was enabled.

these lenovo x140e's run great on win 7 and xp, lenovo even has drivers, if you are into radio or another hobby where you need an xp or win7 machine these are great and dirt cheap. i bought an ex post office 140e for 20 pounds, it came blank but with all its stuff, its running an sdr transceiver on win7 and works great.

you should try installing linux on a Chromebook. Or Windows (though it will be harder because you need a modified BIOS, and hardmodding

Suggestion: Attempt to DualBoot a thinkpad?
@CoteaGeorgeC6 жыл бұрын
All Thinkpads that come with Windows Vista or 7 have the key under the battery. The ones that come with 8 have the key in the uefi

"Other (Please Comment!)" Hackintosh, it's a little hard though, maybe Remix OS? Nah, it runs Marshmallow, Maybe Android x86 CyanogenMod? I had luck with the CM version instead of the original one that they have, something is wrong with the bootloader after a install, so the CyanogenMod version is your only choice for stability and Android.

I had bad luck with etcher on a mac, dd-utility or just plain dd has worked well for me.

Rolando Marrero same for me on Windows. Rufus works so much better and is a lot more reliable.
