To be fair, the two men he would probably be worried about both died, and for all Diego knew the natives fled or died in their own trap, he probably figured it was a very low chance he would ever see them again.

Another complication is under Spainish Law, the surface owner of land did NOT own any ores found on thst land. Such minerials were the property of the King not who found it, or whose land it is on. Thus if any gold was found, it was the property of the King, not the person who found the gold.

The California gold fields were in Russian California, Northern California. In fact Suttler mills where the first gold was found, had been built by the Russians and sold to Suttler. No gold along the coast but in the northern interior, thus no gold in Ssn Francisco or Monterey but Scamento was a center for the gold fields.

Given Spainish law on Gold and Silver, you did not want raw gold or Silver for the law said all such Gold and Silver belonged to the King of Spain. You wanted coins, for that showed the gold had been the property of the King but had been given to others for use. i.e. gold and silver coins were just mediums of exchange not the property of the King.
