I've owned the 0562CF for a little over a year now, and the XM18 (Spanto) for a few months. As you said they're both great knives, but I love the beefiness of the XM18, and I have to admit that the fact that I have a Hinderer in my pocket does put a bit of a smile on my face.

Very thorough review/comparison. I love them both... one other detail that I would put in favor of the XM-18 is that when closing, it clears the detent ball more quickly than does the 0562. Well done!

I appreciate the fact that you actually said something that most reviewers seem to ignore when picking a knife, and that's how a particular knife actually makes you feel! I watch countless knife reviews and everyone attempts to be objective, but you can't, everyone's feelings come through some how and their personal interests usually effect the review in some way. So rather than ignore that, come right out and say it. When you get into knives, how a knife makes feel justifies what you pay almost more so thank anything else, and that is very personal, and there is nothing wrong with that. On paper a knife may justify it's price, but if I get it in my hand and it just doesn't "click" for me personally, that price, and spec sheet means absolutely nothing to me.

I would agree with your opinion. I have an old Hinderer and it is bulletproof. But I bought a new ekipse 3.5 and the quality has really got bad on these knives. My buddy has one and holding them side by side and there are noticeable size tolerance differences in both knives. It seems like their manufacturing is inconsistent with the same knife made at different times.

I have 2 ZT0562’s with anodized scales from USA MADE Blade and 2 Hinderer XM-18 Gen 6’s, one a Spanto in S45VN and one a Harpoon Spanto Skinny in CPM 20CV. The action on both 0562’s are nowhere near the XM-18’s, having double clutches on closing and have a somewhat, for lack of a better term, “unsatisfying” sound on opening and closing. Even discounting the “branding” factor, the XM-18’s are head and shoulders above the 0562’s. Just my 2 cents. 😇

Just got an xm-18 myself, and have owned a 0562cf for a while. While similar, the Hinderer does feel a little more high quality, more solid, stiffer detent, and just awesome. The ZT feels a little more docile, for lack of a better term. A little more slippery, more rounded, softer in general, but still high quality. People agonize over which to get but in my opinion they are different enough that there is room for both in a collection. Whether the extra cost for a hinderer is worth it to most people? That's up to the individual. I think it is, and can't wait to swap mine over to phosphor bronze washers to see how it is. I will say, the Hinderer is smoother on bearings. There's none of that feeling of the bearings rolling around. It's just smooth... Really awesome and impressive! I've had a little lock stick, but a little sharpie and working it is clearing it up nicely. Not much different than my Gayle Bradley 2.
@socmonki
@socmonki 4 жыл бұрын
Update on my lock stick. I was flipping it all day Saturday. Lots of graphite and sharpie used. The lock stick became unbearable, to the point that my thumb is slightly bruised. I was agonizing over wondering if I should send it to the Ranch. Decided to clean up the tang and everything I could get to with some alcohol and a cotton swab, and then put a dab of oil on the detent ball since it was grinding after. NO MORE LOCK STICK! A little loctite on the pivot to keep it from backing out, and I'm good. This knife is incredible. Totally worth the price I paid, and I have no regrets. I will probably acquire more Hinderers....

Stupid man brain was the factor that pushed the Hinderer to the win. What I took from this was that the ZT loses by a hair where it loses and wins by more when it wins. Since I don’t have a stupid man brain (I have a smart man brain) I’m ordering the ZT. 😎

The only way I could rationalize getting a slicer XM-18 without selling my 0562ti was to buy the skinny. So that's exactly what I did. Both great. Two of my favorites, and I'm pretty sure the 0562 is still my answer to if I had to use one knife for the rest of my life - slicey enough for food prep, thick enough for hard use. Skinny slicer is right there though, especially since the main things I use a knife for are cutting boxes and ensuring steaks are medium rare.

Hello there! Nice VS as always! I would like to buy my first Hinderer XM-18 3.5" but I need some advice. My job (print operator) envolve a lot of serious cutting tasks (ranging from thick cardboard to PVC). I need something that cuts well. I hesitate between a Skinny Sheepsfoot and a Regular Slicer. As I am currently EDCing a Sebenza Insingo, I tend to favor the Sheepsfoot blade but for what I saw online, the aftermarket for the Skinny XM-18 seems very limited. Should I instead go for the Regular Slicer and be able to customise it later? Can I get your feedback?

What I was just wondering which one between a Regular 3.5" Slicer and a Skinny 3.5" Sheepsfoot would be the best cutting tool. I supposed the skinny being the thinnest (hence the catchy name) would perform better, even more so with a sheepsfoot blade. And if so, if it was worth having limited customising options. You should have had a Gen4 one for the flipping experience. If you don’t push it it’s not going to open. So doing it like the ZT with pushing it back you can’t open the Gen4 that’s what I really really hated about my Xm18. Haven’t had a Gen6 one so far but I am now searching for a 0562Ti because of that issue. ZT is making better Hinderer than Hinderer 😂. I only got a Slippy right now and what I really hate about Hinderer is the usage of these unnecessary screws. Use Torx and everybody would be fine but no they need to use these stupid screws.

Sorry, going to have to agree to disagree. Especially on value. Hinderer starts at $425 but add, what, $135 for the titanium scale? Then we have a level playing field. Pocket clip. Nuff said. Personally, I'd rather have more blade than a forward choil. I rarely, if ever, use one though I have lots of knives that have them. It just doesn't add any advantage to the tasks that I do plus ApostleP will grind in a choil for less than the cost of a Hinderer titanium scale. Jimping on the backstrap, right at the spot where other designers are smoothing and relieving the area is a no brainer. Smoothness, well, I don't have a triway so it might not be completely fair but my 0562's are smoother. Last big point, there are plenty of after market parts available for the 0562 from titanium pivots in any color to scales, colored screws and custom all-over anno jobs.
