ZTE MC888 5G internet speed test with external antennas after a full SMA port modification

I've got one of those the 42.1 download speed must have been on 4G plus,it does connect to both,using an uncapped EE data sim from Amazon I've had over 400 Mbps on my unmodified router on 5G and over 300 with a 3 mobile sim.

Hi Dave, it looks like you have the outdoor aerials out on a balcony reasonably high up? Would moving the router to that window -shelf without modification, result in results something in-between? Or do you think its the modification AND the cost of properly set up and tuned external aerials, that make the significant difference? If for example, moving the router to the window, with better line of sight to the cell towers gives you 250Mbs , it may - maynot be worth a £150-200 router upgrade and £150 -£300 aerial upgrade? Thoughts?

Hi, Daniel. Yes, if you just move the router closer to wherever the signal is better it will perform better. Even windows can reduce the signal quite significantly, especially certain types of double glazing. I also have a setup with a standard router inside a waterproof box outside on the balcony. The power is sent over the ethernet cable and the signal is returned to a wifi router indoors. This results in a considerable performance boost without using external antennas by just having the router outside without any windows reducing the cell tower signals. However, it's not something that I will show on my channel as most people have a difficult enough time with technology in general and the idea of putting a router outdoors would probably horrify most people. In fact, you may find this video interesting, it's a router that's specifically designed to go outdoors kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoTZh2NoadR0Z7Msi=hRc3qonWLdjUSQ7L On the point of using a modded router and outdoor antenna. Just having two external 5G connections to an outdoor 5G antenna is probably the best idea and is usually a better tradeoff between a standard router and a fully modified router with 3 or 4 outdoor antennas. Keep an eye on the channel as I will be doing a similar video to this one soon but using the MC888 with just the 5G part modification and a small 5G outdoor antenna. The modified router still get the same signal quality without the external antenna? The internal antenna still working or not?

Any specific reason why there are 2x 4G antennas and just 1x 5G antenna? Would it not make more sense to be the opposite, or then just add another 5g antenna?

This is because I'm in the UK and we don't have 5G SA or aggregation. In certain other countries, yes, the advantage would be to have two 5G antennas. Cheers, Dave.

Should have made a test with a 5G phone aswell. I get around 250Mb/s with my phone at home and believe I will get better results with the unmodified router, not as bad as in the video.

wish they provided a guide to do the mod. i could do it myself but don't know which internal antennas do what, and i can't send my router to the UK for them to do it
