+steelnerve Although marked as a ‘folk song’ in this video, this is actually a prayer (prarthona). It is only a portion of the original song penned by Madhavdev, disciple of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, in his book of hymns - the Naam Ghosa. Do search Wikipedia to know more about them. The original Naam Ghosa has been translated into English by Soroj Kumar Dutta in his book ‘The Divine Verses: A Translation of the Original "Naam-ghosa" of Sri Sri Madhavadeva’. The song talks about how our mundane life is largely ruled by Maya (illusion) and that Lord Krishna is the ultimate truth. We are all ignorant, consumed by materialism, and only He can show us the way to moksha. In the literal sense, the song goes like this: Brohma adi kori jibo joto, ramo ramo ramo ramo, maya xoijya maje asoyo ghumoti jayee (This entire creation that began with Brahma, now lies asleep in the bed on Maya) Tumi xe soitonyo xonatono, ramo ramo ramo ramo, ami osetono niyuko natho jogayee (O God, you are eternally the awakened one. We are only ignorant and benighted; o Lord, awaken our souls, too) Xudro xukhe bohu axa kori, bhobokupe jibo ase pori (Consumed by the yearn for trivial happiness, you creations are spending their days lying in the deepest darkness of ignorance) Kaalo xorpe donxi horailo setona taro (They have been bitten big time by a serpentine impulse of trepidation; they have lost their acumen and the cognizance of the good and evil) Mokyo roope toju bakyamrito, kripaye xinchiya protinito (O lord, your words are like manna that offers salvation of the soul; shower your blessings and kindness on us ever day) Doyamoyo hori koriyu muko uddharo (O kind lord, deliver us of all evil) Xoruboro grahe dhori ase, gojendro pirako paya pase, Akaxe goruro skhondho sorkro dhori hori (The grah (makara - a mythological crocodile like animal) has captured Gajendra (an elephant) in a lake. Hearing his prayers, the lord has emerged in the skies riding on the great Garuda and spinning the sudarshana chakra in his finger) Dekhi xubornoro podmo dhori, bulu dukhe artonado hori, Nomu bhogobonto guru loiu daaxo kori (Gajendra offers a golden lotus from the lake pleading the great lord to relieve him of the pain, he leaves his pride behind and surrenders himself to God) Note: The lake is this earth, Gajendra the soul, and Grah death. Refer to ‘Gajendra Moksha in Wikipedia. My inference may be flawed. Fellow Assamese are welcome to correct me.
