To celebrate the centenary of Indian cinema, programs were being organized all over the country, in one such program, when the speaker Naresh Kapadia revealed that the heroine of the first talkie film of Hindi cinema was from Gujarat, the people there were surprised. It was learned that the actress who played an important role in writing the most beautiful page in the golden history of Indian cinema was actually a resident of Surat. Yes, the first talkie film of Hindi cinema Alam Ara was released on March 14, 1931. This film was directed by Ardeshir Irani, and the heroine of this film was actress Zubaida Begum Dhanrajgiri. Zubaida Begum was a resident of Hiranagari Surat in Gujarat.
Actress Zubeida, who made a distinct identity in films from Alam Ara, was seen in this film alongside Prithviraj Kapoor and Master Vitthal. Zubeidaa is respected more for her contribution to Hindi cinema because she broke the stereotypes in the patriarchal era at that time, and acted as the lead actress in the film Himmat Dikha. Friends, let us tell you that in those days only men used to play the role of women.
The date of birth of Zubeida Begum is not known but yes it happened in the year 1911 in Surat. His father was Nawab Ibrahim Muhammad Yakut Khan and mother Fatima Begum of Sachin (the area now falling in the city of Surat). Zubeida's mother, Fatima Begum (1905 - 1983), was one of the earliest stars of Indian cinema. Zubeida was the eldest of three sisters, her other sisters being Shehzadi and Sultana. Both of them also became actresses later. Zubeida's early career films include Devdas (1937) and Sagar Movietone's Meri Jaan.
Zubeida entered films at a very young age, she was just 12 years old when she made her acting debut in the film Kohinoor. In the 1920s he acted with his sister Sultana. Both of these sisters later acted in many films, one of which was the 1924 release film 'Kalyan Khajina'. Both these sisters had also worked together in Veer Abhimanyu along with their mother.
As I told you that Zubeidaa started her career with silent films but Alam Ara proved to be the turning point of her career and became her biggest hit. She suddenly became a hot property and became the highest paid actress in the film industry.
In 1925, Zubeida acted in nine films including Kala Chor, Devdasi and Desh Ka Dushman. In 1926, he acted in his mother's film Bulbul-e-Paristan. In 1927, Laila Majnu, Nandan Bhojai and Naval Gandhi's Baidarana films were memorable and successful films of his career. Based on Rabindranath Tagore's story 'Balidan', the latter also starred Sulochana Devi, Master Vitthal and Jal Khambatta. The film condemned the age-old practice of animal sacrifice in some Kali temples of Bengal. The members of the Indian Committee of Cinematography were mesmerized by this "sublime and truly Indian film". Its European members recommended that it be screened in other countries as well.
In the 30s and early 40s he formed a hit team with Jal Merchant and went on to act in several successful mythological films playing characters such as Subhadra, Uttara and Draupadi. She went on to star in films such as Ezra Mir's Zarina, where she played a vivacious, volatile circus girl whose kiss rocked the silver screen and sparked a heated debate over censorship. Had gone Zubeidaa was one of the few actresses who worked in talkies from the silent era.
In 1934, he formed a production house named Mahalaxmi Movietone with Nanubhai Vakil and under the banner of this production made films like 'Gul-e-Sonobaar' and 'Rasik-e-Laila' which were quite successful at the box-office. She continued to appear in one or two films a year till 1949. 'Nirdosh Abla' was probably his last film.
Zubaida married Maharaja Narsingir Dhanrajgir Gyan Bahadur of Hyderabad. She was the mother of Humayun Dhanrajgir and Dhureshwar Dhanrajgir. Dhureshwar is the mother of the famous and beautiful model Riya Pillai. Zubaida spent the last years of her life at the family's Bombay palace, Dhanraj Mahal. She left this world on 21 September 1988, she was cremated at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Marg, Apollo Bunder, Colaba, South Mumbai.
