I honestly wasn't upset zub declined to move and I respected him for such a big decision. In a transfer market that's full of mercenary players that are only in it for the money it was nice to see a player that had loyalty. Gravenberch didn't reject Liverpool, he chose Bayern (who probably offered more money than fsg too). Not quite the same thing. More importantly, Bayern and Liverpool are two of the biggest clubs in the world who offer players similar things, e.g. CL football and trophies. Zubimendi chose to stay @ Sociedad, who are a much smaller club than Liverpool. I respect a player staying with their hometown club, but it shows a real lack of ambition from Zubimendi - who clearly told Liverpool he wanted to come before changing his mind. Since then, Gravenberch has stepped up and not just been our best midfielder this season, but our best player. Zubimendi's a very good player, but unless we can get him for a reduced fee, he's not worth the risk.

With the new European competition format, fans need to stop with who starts. The seasons become difficult each year. Every week have 2 games until end of season if you go far in cups. Mid tier clubs also increasingly have better management thus better squad. Having 2 competitive players in the same position is a blessing for flexible managers. Every player will eventually get their part to play in the season with sufficient game time

If you check out the latest video of FourFourTwo on Slot's pressing and attacking structure, it will be difficult to have a CAM with the legs of Mac or Elliott and really needs to be someone like Szoboszlai, for me zubimendi would be inter changeable with Mac and Grav interchangeable with Szobo. Mac and Elliott would work as a 10 with a low block but not in expansive matches like the AC Milan style match

people criticize FSG for a variety of reason and many of them valid. But I respect their front office in that they are not looking for the "best" player they are looking for the "right" player and they don't settle for just anyone for the sake of signing someone. My reservation about Zubimendi is that we agreed to his terms and put the money of the table and then after everyone's terms were met he backed out of the deal. So if we do end up getting him in January, how is he going to respond if he cannot win the position from Gravenberch. Is he suddenly going to have regrets and want to be sold to a team he is guaranteed starting minutes? Adding him gives us depth, but what if we are better served using the 60 million to buy two players for 30 million who are effective squad players who can cover for injuries and rotation for domestic cup ties? If Zubimendi now wants to join Liverpool and can demonstrate that he wants to play for the Badge and accept whatever role he ends up having, then welcome to Merseyside. But I think we need to establish that he is that dude and if he is not, then we ought to look elsewhere for the right player.

Gravenberch has been outstanding as a 6, has far more potential in that position and is 4 years younger. Ryan will be a better 6 than Zubimendi by the end of the season, and is much more suited to the PL. What's the point of spending £100m (transfer and wages) on a bench player who may not be physical enough for the PL and could easily get homesick too. Better to spend that money on a younger, more ambitious midfielder - or just wait and see how Bajcetic develops @ Salzburg.

At the end of the day, the team needs 6 quality midfielders. 2 attacking mids in szobo and Elliot, 2 cms in maca and jones and 2 dms in grav and Endo. It’s looking like endo is the odd man out. But if you bring in zubimendi, who would sit? Grav is playing out his mind right and maca is maca. I don’t think zubimendi is needed right now. With Morton and baj in the wings, I’m not sure it’s a good idea. Maybe a half season loan for zubimendi to try it out but I’m not sure of a permanent deal.
