This has to be one of the few times we actually get to see Azula just chill and relax and by that I mean showing how much war,propaganda,and brainwashing she has experienced by the Fire Nation just as she was about to experience Human emotions and simple things in life she fell into her old habits

Though it’s not exactly wrong or inaccurate. It’s definitely sad that that the only way that they know is chaos. In a sense it’s what (spoilers for Tim should he read this) Zuko was saying less eloquently when he commented “why am I so bad at being good”.

This episode shows us how child are traumatized by their experiences. All 4 Fire Nation teens have some sort of emotional trauma and del with it in unhealthy ways. Ty Lee ran away and joined the circus, Mai puts up a front so no one can get close to her, Zuko has outbursts of anger, and Azula suppresses her emotions and acts like she isn't traumatized.

It’s kinda rare to see episodes in shows that focus mainly on the antagonists and this one was really interesting to me. Spending time with Zuko and Co. on an average day and getting some background knowledge on their lives was pretty cool. Overall, “The Beach” is a good episode imo.

this episode is really just disguised as a fun beach episode but its easily 1 of the best at analyzing the characters and giving a look at what makes them tick like Zuko's struggle building up and Azula's nonexistant social skills from being raised by and as a monster all while still only being a teenager really puts her writing into perspective and makes her an actually tragic character

9:44, quite a lot actually. He was both emotionally and physically scarred by his father. He grew up in fear of his father disappearing him the way he disappeared his mother. He was forced to suffer punishment and humiliation for daring show compassion. And spent almost three years straight as an object of scorn and mockery regarded as a pathetic failure. The result is that he often feels that the universe is actively conspiring to make him suffer “you’ve never held back before” and his first response to virtually anything not going as planned is to assume the worst. He also has a terrible temper. To be fair to him, pretty much none of that is actually his fault. That said, in this episode it actually is.

It seems to me that a dude with a third eye is a local analogue of Shan Yu or Vision.
@TheApollonian Жыл бұрын
What that third-eyed dude is doing is called combustion bending. It is another, 🔥 sub-bending form of fire bending and is super rare only, belonging 2 people, Combustion Man in ATLA and P'Li in TLOK. The eye, surrounded by tattoos, is located on the forehead chakra and deals with insight but is blocked by illusion. It comes from the breath of the user and allows the bender to ignite and blow up things precisely yet effectively. It is a great weapon and is capable of being used in defence and offence. It can also disintegrate objects, almost always instantaneously evaporate water, light things up with ease, be used in long range combat and can (P'Li only) curve around corners. Combustion benders concentrate their energy into the forehead chakra and project a ray that detonates when coming into contact with anything. Despite being a powerful sub-bending form, it has a glaring weakness and can be as hazardous to the user as it can to their surroundings. It can be blocked when something hits the tattooed third-eye. It blocks the flow of chi and energy, whether temporarily or permanently, causing the bender to temporarily not be able to bend or back fire and blow up in their face.

I actually have an interesting theory that is most definitely not canon, but I think the reason Ty Lee is so… flirty is because she wants to hide that she's a lesbian. In the Fire Nation during Sozin, Azulon, and Ozai's reign, same-sex relationships were declared illegal, and anyone caught would be severely punished. She and Mai both know the consequences if they're caught, so they pretend to like boys to avoid punishment. It's a real life phenomenon called compulsory heterosexuality, and it's kind of depressing, really. Mai only dates Zuko because her family wanted her to, but there was never any passion behind any of those kisses between her and Zuko. They're both closeted lesbians trying to survive until something changes. Of course, we all know that Zuko joins the Gaang and he becomes a better person, is crowned the new Firelord, and repeals the law against same-sex marriage. But Mai and Ty Lee don't know that's gonna happen. For all they know, they will have to hide their sexualities for the rest of their lives. I know that contradicts the ending where Mai and Zuko get back together and Ty Lee joins the Kyoshi warriors, but hey, this is just a theory. A *film* theory! Thanks for reading!

I bet she actually wants to be with me but is afraid of what will happen to her if Azula finds out about her dating me! She'd probably report our butts "straight" to the Fire Lord!" Get it? Straight?
