I wish people would stop saying milk is 8 to 10 dollars. Yes, of course there are stores that are high. You shop at the other stores that have gallon milk for $5.00 (i.e. Safeway, times, target, Walmart and Costco) you don’t buy at ABC or Morihara up country). Moved here 34 years ago.... now that was rough. Food prices are higher, but it’s gotten and getting much better....Aloha🌺

I agree with what you say. There is always a way to find an affordable options. We mostly shop at Costco and Whole Foods. What places do you shop your produce? Maybe we are not aware of some cost affective places :)
@DV-yr5ow
@DV-yr5ow 5 жыл бұрын
Funny thing is, I don’t shop at Costco except for a few items. Never Whole Foods. Pretty much stick to target for soda, bottle water, paper products and toiletries. I buy meat at times( formerly Star Market ) I think they have the best steaks and pork chops. Mostly get my fruits, vegetables, chicken and milk at Safeway here in Kihei. K-mart had some good produce but unfortunately, it closed. I might be a little less shocked at prices because I moved here from Oahu in Waikiki ( now there milk was double the price ) and before that NYC. Funny story, when I moved to Honolulu in the mid eighties and being a flight attendant, I’d work trips to LAX where I would shop (OJ, toilet paper, peanut butter, bread) and haul it back! Keep up your enthusiasm for Your new home ....E komo mai🌴

Thank you for heads up DV 121. That's so funny how Oahu is so different than maui even we are so close to each other. Indeed, Costco is still very expensive haha but can't beat the gas price. :)

Nikki Carbonell if not careful Maui could go down the path go Oahu. I’ve been going to Maui for 30 years and so far it remains a beautiful place. The experience of those born there however is a difficult one as the economy is lopsided and opportunities slim. I understand that.
@greghelton4668
@greghelton4668 3 жыл бұрын
Nikki Carbonell well it’s my prerogative isn’t it? We live in a free country. Look, just imagine the disruption experienced by the natives when the settlers arrived. Hawaii is going through another change now with the descendants of those settlers being subject to change. At least Maui is trying to help via programs like low income housing and generous programs like healthcare for the poor. Now we need industries not tied to tourism. The change is inevitable but we can adapt to the changes.

Emily, sorry for super late reply. Yes people bomb the houses or apartments to get rid of bugs. However, I would always recommend to keep all the holes closed so bugs won't be able to come through. :)

I’m applying to jobs this month and I’m planning on moving to either Oahu, or Maui in the summer time by myself! I know people on each island so hopefully I can stay with them for a few days! I’m planning on selling my car and putting a down payment on another car. But are the cars they sell actually crap? (I was just planning on getting one from a dealership and making a payment every month) Super stoked to escape from the Michigan Winter. - also I fell in love with Hawaii, after I visited Kauai Thanks for the video

That's awesome Meghan, I wish you good luck. I think you can get great cars here but you definitely will pay more compared to the mainland. Everything cost little higher but I hope the job you are looking for pays it back. So far we have been super happy with the banking system, it is super manageable taking care of car payments with less interest rate. Much love xoxo 😇❤️

Thank you for the insightful video. We are considering a move to Maui. We have been there for a few family vacations and with my wife taking a new job that allows her to work from home (Radiologist) we can live anywhere in the U.S. I like the idea of living within a short drive to WF and Costco. Would you recommend any highly rated middle-High schools Private or public nearby? Top priorities for us are schools as I know some are lacking in Maui far as being highly academic and of course location of home. Don’t want to live on part of the island where rainfall is more significant. Our price range is 900-1.3m for a house. Any farmers market? I know local farms sell grass-fed beef which is great, granted we mostly eat vegetables unless we hit a killer steakhouse. 😊

I would say I don't want to burst your bubble, but for the sake of your kids and to spare you some despair in the future.... just DON'T DO IT. I grew up on Maui. First-hand experience. And I am telling you: there ARE no good middle schools or high schools. There simply aren't. People who argue otherwise are just being loyal/nostalgic to their upbringing or something, and not factual. The schools are all known for chronic underachievement and dysfunction, even if they try hard to look good on the outside. There are a couple of "nice" rich schools, but even with them there are problems. One of them, Kamehameha won't even be an option for you as it is racially exclusive (I am not kidding). You have to be able to claim some percentage of native Hawai'ian blood to get to go there... The other one is Seabury Hall, super expensive private school in Upcountry Maui. But as for IF it actually is a better school, academically? Doubtful... I went to the nearby public high school and knew people who went to Seabury... and I think the main difference was what their parents paid for them to go there. I remember there was a common joke on my high school campus that the only real difference between my (public) school and Seabury was that they (the rich kids) had the more expensive drugs... and that's another thing you need to know about. Drugs. There is a huge problem with recreational drugs on Maui and it is definitely all over the schools. Letting your child grow up on Maui is very likely going to get them into drugs at one point or another. And they will be WAY behind academically, with teachers that don't care. You can also look up school performance statistics to check this (but even them: read them with a grain of salt... as a lot of failing students are pushed through to high school graduation despite failing a lot, just to keep the schools from looking terrible on those stats.... it's true I have lived it, so I know...) And that is not even mentioning Hawai'is ugly problem with racism, that no one wants to talk about, and instead just pretend it's not there.... Don't get me wrong, there are wonderful, great people in Hawai'i. There are. But there are also a lot of racists who think it is fine to to discriminate based on race. It is everywhere... under the surface (or right on the top, hahaha....) Believe me, I love Hawai'i, but I am being real about it's issues. People wanting to move out there and idealizing the place is a huge problem. Not just for them, but for everyone else. I also don't like how the couple in the video just kinda glossed over the homeless situation. A lot of the homeless are sick (carrying staph, for example) and living in terrible conditions. Also on drugs and often suffering from mental illness. It can be a very stressful environment to live in with such a huge homeless population, because homeless men will literally come right up go you on the street, when you are just minding your own business (especially if you are a young woman). This is not always so much fun. If you move out to Maui naively you are likely to end up homeless yourself. No joke. (Yes, it can happen to you.) Just live somewhere else and stop chasing "paradise on earth" .... there IS no paradise on Earth. This whole world is corrupt, every bit of it. If you want to see paradise, follow Jesus. That is the only way. (That's all I have to say. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read.... )

I absolutely agree with everything you said. A good friend of ours who has a second home in Maui said the exact same thing. @@michaelangelo747 Yes He is, Praise the Lord! And yes, the racism is sadly real. I'm very very light-skinned myself and even though like I say I love Maui, it was painful growing up there and even as an adult many many times being treated as less than human because of the color of my skin/prejudice. It is a real problem and yet people deny it all the time... act like it's nothing. But in my experience it even affects your basic ability to survive, for example get/keep a job (unless youre part of the rich elite...). Very sad it is like this.
@stephanieadlersfeld8713

@@mahealanicarbonell7932 You seriously read what I wrote and yet think I don't know about the historical reason why Kamehameha schools have their admission policy? That historical reason doesn't make it any less racist how it is today. It is absolutely racist and causes division among children. It does damage. And btw you are not even correct in what you say about the names of schools, so are you even from Maui? I for instance went to King Kekaulike High School. Before that, Kalama Intermediate. Before that, Makawao Elementary. How do those names sound to you? Haha you don't even know what you are talking about. Sure, there's Baldwin but whatever. It is definitely not the case that all other schools beside Kamehameha have non-Hawaiian names...?? And I really take issue with your use of some words here. You say kanaka like you think it is denoting a certain race, when it doesn't mean that at all. Kanaka are the people native to the land who care for the land. It is 2020, lady... different races have been living in Hawaii for many generations now. You are native of the place you are born in and/or the place you grew up since you were small (it's all you know) - the culture you belong to... So not all Kanaka anymore are descendants specifically only of those with native Hawaiian blood. There are white ("light-skinned") kanaka. Anyone truly native of the islands (who's not racist) knows what I am talking about. It is about the person's/family's history and who they are and their love of the land/responsibilty towards it. Not how they look! And btw, you using the word haole like that makes me think you are racist yourself. Don't you know what you are saying? Nah, probably you don't. And by that twisted definition of yours, what makes you kanaka? In your picture you look like a white girl. Last of all, real intelligent of you to say to me that I shouldn't move out there. (??) Do you not even read what you respond to? I was giving the OP here advice not to settle there from the mainland, like so many do. Lol, for you to think you can talk to me like this with a name like Nikki Carbonell (Italian?), is hilarious. Maybe you yourself moved to Maui from New Jersey or something.... 🙄 And then started to try and act like a Tita to try blend in and to try avoid being called haole... haha.. I know that type. 😂 Anyway have a nice day, and maybe reconsider that misplaced victim mentality. And if you love Hawai'i, learn how it really got the way it is now, and learn who the real enemy was/is.
