WHBI was a brokered ethnic station that could only exist in New York, I listed to this show sometimes driving home from a club in Jersey. Mostly I listed to New York's new wave of rock shows, that were on some overnights and a couple of mornings, the music later sucked and they coulden't pay the air time. The rap, hip hop shows continued when the station was sold and became WNWK until they became Spanish and even the World's Famous Supreme Team was on for a little while on WPAT-AM which picked up the format,.

There was a show where they mixed up loads of james brown grooves, with Champ and let a woman be a woman, man if anyone has that, I would be amazed, I haven't heard it in years. The son of Bamabata, none other, Africa Islam, the prince of Charm.....I love the static on these tape recordings, ultra dope.

Afrika Islam rocked on nyc's hot 97 for one night. The following week DJ Red Alert took over. The rest is history. Afrika Islam is a true hip hop pioneer.
