Thank you for this jewel ! A lot to remember and see !! Could see George Mofatt and Klaus Holighaus, two of my idols by then.. as I was competing in Brazil's National Soaring Championship... and placed 12°...

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I remember you from the film. Moffatt was a hero to most of us glider pilots.

George Moffat taught English at the Pingry School during the 1960-70s. One of the best teachers there and I took every class I could from him. George died June 22, 2024 at 97.

Thank you for preserving this film! Nice to see the LS2 in its element. One of the funkiest gliders I've flown.

Fabulous! Hats off to Ausie film crews, editors and music directors. And thanks both you and Paul R. for saving a treasure! I plan to start recording soaring pilots of this same era here in So. CA. We are losing precious history.

That would be good. I was in training during the gliding during the championship in 1974 and pilots like George Moffat was a real inspiration to us.

Thanks for sharing this, showing the early days of composite gliders. The advent of electronics has removed much of the need for monitoring starts, but there is still quite a team needed at each competition to launch, monitor and retrieve gliders as necessary. These people are the silent stars of any contest, perhaps none more so than the ones who keep everyone fed.

Yes, I think that is what comes out in this film very well is how the support crew is absolutely essential.

The shot of Suzanne claiming to be more of a boy than a girl was pretty hilarious.

Alex, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for posting this! I really enjoyed seeing this bit of soaring history and learned some things about contest soaring. Great story, great editing and pretty good photography given what was available at the time. I especially liked seeing all the state-of-the-art gliders at that time that are now available, affordable and being used as fun fliers.

This video would be much better if you used your computer to stabilize it. I gave up watching after a few minutes because it jumps around so much, especially when the camera is zoomed in on the sailplanes.
@Alex-ok7mg5 жыл бұрын
I understand - however I wanted to preserve the film the way it was presented and I suspect it was difficult in those days of low budgets and poor technology to stabilise the portable cameras. It is worth persevering with though!

Thanks Paul I suspect all copies out there, including yours, came from my original as I began sending out DVD versions of the copy to many of the gliding fraternity here in Australia about 15 or 20 years ago after rediscovering the original VHS copy that I made in the bottom of a cupboard. However I do like the look of the way you have presented the DVD artwork and also encourage people to get a copy of your DVD.
