Very interesting to see this vid and watch your process roll out in this type of setting! I was curious to see you put metallics onto your wet palette, however; most of the advice I've seen on that is to avoid doing so, because the metal flakes pass through the paper and get into the sponge material where it can affect other normal paints. You don't find that an issue at all?
@xTheZapper3 жыл бұрын
The oil wash is a popular technique with military model kit builders, I use it all the time for mine, but I'd never mix it is thick as you did. It's worth mentioning that the gloss varnish you put on underneath has to be strong with no gaps, and it *MUST* be acrylic/water based, if it's spirit based it'll come off when you try to clean it up with white spirit. Also, even though white spirit shouldn't attack water based acrylic paint, it will if you put too much pressure on or use too much spirit. This would have been fine to leave for a day or more if you'd diluted the oil paint a bit more, I've wiped off oil wash weeks later after applying it.

Big respect for sharing it even though you weren't as satisfied (at least that what it sounded like to me). I think it looks absolutely amazing, and learning to work through mistakes is part of the fun!

Thank you! Definitely not satisfied with them haha - you will really know what I mean once you see my new video, since that is the result I was aiming for!

I have not painted in twenty years or so but I got the itch back and ordered everything I need to start again and let me tell you: it is so very reassuring to see that experienced painters can f up and that not everything is lost when that happens.

You know that’s actually a really cool way to get east weathering on your models if your willing to spend the time to clean them up

I love that you mention seeing progress in every model to stay motivated. Batch painting almost ruined the hobby for me. Had to start painting no more than 3 models at a time maximum.

I have always striggled with oil washes. Each time I try to clean them off I find that I end up rubbing off the underlying paint, or the white spirit eats into it. I've tried multiple combinations of different washes, different brands of spirit or thinners, etc. I have come to the conclusion that I am cursed, so I just use them for recess and panel lining and clean up by repainting rather than cleaning away the wash.

The hard weathering actually looks really cool. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good
