Thank you for describing how to configure the Blue DV and the DMR radio to get you to the talk group you desire, and the well prepared scripted explanation with concise information and little rambling from subjects to concepts and off the cuff comments. I will mention you in my correspondence with Ham Radio Outlet. You've made an impression.

Thanks man. I was sitting here wondering if this would work in the USB port of my Pi. It seemed to make sense since HRO says it works in Linux but you never know. Now I know which one I'll get. My brother has one of the older hats but I don't really want to go that route at the moment. Good video.

To be quite honest here... my experience is that the Openspot and Openspot2 are just about the best hotspots on the market right now. However, the Pi-star and BlueDV based hotspots DO WORK, you just have to sometimes toy with them a little more and a little longer before getting them usable.
@jimgerke2203
@jimgerke2203 5 жыл бұрын
I have an original openSpot and disagree with your statement about it being "best." I've mine for about 18 months and have had lock up problems when switching profiles and, unfortunately, the manufacturer has been no help in resolving the issue. So, I just leave it parked on the YSF Americas Link room and don't fool with it. OTOH, the Zumspot I've had since October, 2018, works flawlessly on D-Star and YSF. I haven't tried it yet on DMR, but I have no doubt it will work fine whenever I get around to it. I followed the setup procedure at amateurradionotes.com/pi-star.htm and didn't have to "toy" with it all. In my experience, the Zumspot is the way to go and it's about half the cost of the openSpot.
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 5 жыл бұрын
@@jimgerke2203 Experiences can vary, of course. My experience with Pi-star overall is that it is buggy. Once you get it setup and working, it is pretty stable...but if you go changing things, like updates to the OS, moving to a new location with another WiFi SSID, etc...it has issues. I have broken 2 or 3 units by just running pistar-update in an SSH connection. The device would reboot and never recover...it would show itself as grabbing an IP from my router, but it didn't serve a web page and had no SSH access. I ended up having to reimage the microSD card each time. This isn't for 1 specific device, like the Zumspot, DXmini, etc...this is Pi-star overall. OTOH, I have 3 Openspot devices and 1 Openspot2. None have ever locked up, they are easy to update, and they work perfectly when switching between modes. I don't really care which one is cheaper...cheaper usually means less quality anyway. Again, experiences can vary, I know lots of people that are happy with the Pi-star devices, but once upon a time I sold the original Openspot, and out of (literally) over 1000 units I sold, I only had 2 come back for legitimate issues.

WHAT BAND(s)???? Why do I have to read the tiny frequency on your computer screen to determine that this runs in the 440 band?? Why does nobody mention what band this thing is, Including the website that sells it!!!?!?!??!?!
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 5 жыл бұрын
Why not email the website that sells it and ask them instead of asking someone like me who has no control over HROs website at all? It's the 440 band like 90+% of the other hotspots out there now.

Find you a thinkpad on CL, offerup or 5mile and load it with Linux Mint. If you need windows on top of that run windows in a virtualbox. Been working great for me for years. Not as durable as a rugged laptop but it's held up well.
@lyfandeth
@lyfandeth 5 жыл бұрын
The ToughBooks are damned expensive and even the newest ones are usually a bit behind the times, but they set the standard for "rugged". Nothing else compares. If you can find a decent used one, that's what you go for. Don't believe Dell about their versions. A Lenovo Thinkpad will get you a wide variety of very well built machines, more bang for the buck, but utility crews and cops all go ToughBook when they need absolute rugged.

Ham Radio 2.0 looking forward to it. I’m waiting for a big hotspot showdown someday. Eventually I’ll build one. I have a tower close by which is set up nicely but the internet company won’t let them run a line into the repeater shack so we have to run off of a Verizon jet pack. Latency is an issue. Looking forward to getting one for the reliability as DMR is not too popular here. 73 K9BSC

This market has come full circle from the USB devices like DVAP and DV4mini where people were trying to make them work portable with a Raspberry Pi and Linux to the original Zumspot with the Pi Zero and Openspots being self contained and then back to another USB device that works like crap and has challenges to use portable. How soon we forget... junk.

What would be the benefit of the USB stick, when I can buy a complete Raspberry Pi with MMDVM tophat for 108 bucks ?
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 5 жыл бұрын
The Pi tophat would still need an RPi with it, which will add about $50 to the cost, for board, sd-card, power supply and case. The USB stick would be good in an application where you want to use a tablet or laptop as a hotspot, and run it from Windows, rather than using an RPi that runs Raspian. Neither option is "better" just different ways of getting into the networks.

I own one myself. I haven’t used it much because each time I have I hear complaints of bad audio. Maybe some amount of tweaking can get it working. But I suspect it has to do with how burdened your computer might be. USB is based on a 16ms interrupt cycle. So if the computer is occupied and misses a single interrupt I think you hear it.

With that being said I just went ahead and purchased the zumspot kit. I called Atlanta and they said they had no idea how to use it.
