You can see why knights stopped using shields by the 1300s. When you BECOME the shield, its alot better to have both of your hands for holding some big hurty thing.
@dequitem
@dequitem 8 ай бұрын
Exactly. The shield is already strabed around his body, so he can use both hands, but even than it's harder for him in grappling or make thrusts from a halfsword. For fighting without a shield he definitely needs more leg protection.

... you are aware Knights never stopped using shields right? Crossbows and maces and axes existed. All hard counters to even the best armor of the time.

@@dequitem Maces were invented to fight metal armor. That is the purpose for thier existance. And well made war axes can easily mangle most of the pieces of the platemail suit. The only thing that stops the axe is a rounded enough breast plate, though that won't matter much with broken arms and broken legs.
@ThatGuyOrby
@ThatGuyOrby 8 ай бұрын
@@annoyedmarine1578 Crossbows performed very poorly against plate, the assertion that crossbows were effective against all armor has been demonstrably debunked by people testing even ridiculously high poundage crossbows against replica armor. The crossbow was feared in its time for its ease of use and its effectiveness against more common armors that made up the armies of the time period. Things like simple gambeson or mail layered over a gambeson. Not for it's effectiveness against ALL armor. There are videos of crossbows with poundages exceeding 900lbs merely denting replica steel plate armor (skallagrim has an old video on this topic and the armor he used was actually non-historical because it was too thin for the time period it was meant to represent. As in it performed worse than a period piece would've and still was merely dented by repeated hits taking several hits to the same place to compromise the plate in any meaningul way). Of course there's always the case of the lucky shot but those are, again, lucky. Not common. Flukes almost. Anything can more or less kill if you get lucky enough to hit them through an eyeslit or where you're only striking mail and gambeson but at that point you're not talking about "defeating steel plate armor" you're just subverting it because your weapon is insufficient to deal a lethal blow through the primary armor. At that point you may as well call arming swords "effective against even the heaviest armor" regardless of the fact that they're nigh useless against plate outside of, again, finding gaps which is absurdly hard to do. Not even pointing out the later you go the harder this becomes as armor grows more and more full in it's coverage to the point where some basically had next to no easily exploitable gaps.

The thing most people do not realize, is that late knight armor is as close to perfection as humanly possible. It is amazing in protecting you as there is almost no gaps in it. And it still allows you amazing range of mobility. When compared to the armor from most other cultures it is like comparing space ship to a wood wagon. I mean google Japanese armor that their top warriors and generals were equipped in, it was full of holes, bulky and awkward as fuck. Same goes for middle east, India and basically everyone else. If not for invention of firearms I wonder how battlefields would look like when more and more people on them would be able to afford that kind of protection.

Great 1-on-1 duel for us history lovers to enjoy! I would like to say though that this type of duel shows why they each have different equipment. The knight with full plate armor was meant to be on horseback with other cavalry and mainly would not try to fight on the ground (although they were very much capable of doing so), and the eastern warrior with lamellar armor and a shield was meant to be in formation with others suited just like him on foot instead. Different situations would lead to either the knight or the footman winning depending on the numbers and proper command of each, not just complete domination by the knight because he is well armored.
@dequitem

I've been in medieval combat for 31 years. I have to say the zweihander fighter is clearly a superior fighter. The sword and shield guy could way more to keep range inside or outside the reach of his opponent. Also his guard never changes keeping himself protected from his opponents guard. His strikes are all basically the same. No wraps, darkside, moleigh, feints, fakes, etc. His footwork is robotic. Just straight forward and no steps to the side to exploit and angle. Not to mention alot of his shots are telegraphed making them easily seen and blocked or avoided all together. He also doesn't use his shield as a weapon or a tool to create more opportunities/openings to strike. Not a fare comparison in my opinion. The zweihander fighter seems like he has twice as much experience.

‘Times are to scary! Don’t have kids!’ Meanwhile they fought like this, thought disease was bad juju, and the church ruled. And even further back short face bear existed, and we had to chase things for days even weeks to get it to stop and then we could eat. Times are amazing actually, having kids is how you change the world.

Now, imagine doing that surrounded by enemies, for about 2.5 hours at a time, before they rotate you out to the rear for water for 2.5 hours, then going back in... and the battle lasting for sometimes days on end. The amount of in shape you needed to be was just.... nuts.

No it isn't the classic rondel from later armors, that shield is older and called Targe or Achselschild in German and is therefore to protect your left armpit a little bit better than a smaller rondel or Schwebescheibe in German Gothic armor.

Just great videos. I enjoy watching them. I must have been a knight in a past life lol. More likely a peasant lol. Have you heard of the combat of the thirty. In 1351 there was an English garrison at a place called Ploermel. It was attacked by the French. To avoid a siege the English commander, Sir Richard Baborough came up with the idea that 30 men-at-arms from each side should fight it out. Which they did. They all fought on foot until a French knight decided to get a horse. It all went down hill for the English after that.there was nine English knights killed including the English commander. Check it out its a great story of true chivalry

The armpit is the Achilles tendon in full suit armor. It's unprotected for the sake of mobility and also has major blood vessels running through it. Nice sparing vid, the accurate portral of technique with weapons & armor along with the rain in an open field adds a realistic feel to watching.

Man, i just love how the two-hander uses the crossguard as a hammer when they tangle. Really using every available tool at your disposal. And a hammer hit right on the helmet is definitely gonna suck. Might not be lethal, but it will open you up for something, in this case a rondel.

This ressembled a duel of warriors who agreed to settle their affairs once and for all. Howls and hushes of wind, armors clanking as swords clashed, the silence of both warriors defeaned the place, and the sky felt so sorrowful as if prepared to mourn. Dude, it looks like some dramatic end for the warrior who will fall.
