Hi Jo. Great ideas! Yes that's definitely safer and more solid than what I did, and can bring greater peace of mind. I went the 12" rod route after seeing an AVX mod doing that. It's actually OK too. I'm running a 28lb OTA without counterweight and I just extend the legs 12" to avoid any risk of toppling and make extra sure that the three pier tensioning locks are all on. When I'm dismantling, it seems that forgetting to fully unlock just one of those locks is enough to stop the mount head (albeit without the telescope attached) from coming out of the pier. So I'm kinda slowly beginning to trust this design. My biggest scare so far wasn't a fail at the pier/AM5 joint, but rather when the losmandy dovetail didn't seat properly one night. So while I wont go revise what I've already done, a lot of what you did make good solid sense. Well worth thinking about.

Great video Jo. Clearly, this will appeal to anyone who is a bit compulsive with their pier extension (i.e., ME! 😂) One question, you mention early in the video that you used an 18” rod, then at the end you mention a 36” that you had to cut. I assume you cut the rod down to 18”, is that right? Also, when you cut a rod with a hacksaw, doesn’t that make it difficult to thread the knob onto the rod (from past experience, every time I’ve cut a rod it leaves jagged edges, do you file these?). Anyway, please keep up your channel, we need innovators like you.

Thank u. Yes, I cut it down to size. Put the knob on before hand or a nut, then cut, take a small file clean up threads and then screw knob or nut off. I t should then go right back on unless u really screwed up the threads. I also used a brand new high end hacksaw blade..... Hope this helps

The holes on top of the tripod are 3/8"? Or are they metric?

The bottom of the mount and the 2 spacers r 3/8". The hole in the tripod is bigger than that. The rod just slide through it...
