ZWO ASI 533mc Pro Unboxing

The ZWO ASI 533mc Pro is a dedicated cooled astronomy camera featuring a high sensitivity CMOS colour sensor. In this video I unbox the camera and talk you through what comes in the box.
Featuring a rather unconventional square sensor 9mp sensor, the 533mc pro is claimed to be a companion to the 183 sensor. Having used the 183 I'm excited to compare this to that. This camera was generously loaned to me by First Light Optics for review. So shoutouts to them.

Also a note: I realised during playback that my hands look terrible. I'm sorry, my job is a car mechanic and during the winter the stress and constant washing really takes a toll on my hands!

player one is gutting team red right now. Their 585 release has better read noise and well depth, as well as passive cooling. And player ones 533 release has better read noise and well depth as well, and it also includes a dew heater and tilt plate. Meanwhile team reds sensors getting hot without cooling turned on.

I do like the little bits of humour you inject, such as The Shining impression you did when you pulled that knife :D Seriously though, FLO are so brilliant, I'm really pleased you're onboard with them and they sent you this camera to review. I'll be able to have shiny astro cameras like this back in my life again soon hopefully, so I'm very much look forward to how things go with 533. I'm just wondering if globs and PN's would look particularly cool with the square sensor? although I guess you can just crop to other aspect ratio's at the expense of pixels if it's too weird. Anyhow it will be interesting to see. I used to be a CNC mechanical engineer so can relate to the hand anxiety.

I do try. Finding the style about whether I put humour etc in it was a choice I made after getting more and more comfortable on camera! I do enjoy FLO, I was buying from them for ages before I even begun thinking about AstroFarsography. So I'm very humbled by this. I think those sorts of targets would work nicely for a square sensor for sure now that you mention it. They're usually self contained and not huge sprawling things. I also think planetary would work well with this camera (with a suitable enough scope/barlow). Though the pixel scale doesn't really enjoy >1100mm focal length. One point of a square sensor is that you can crop the square image however you want it! And thanks for the solidarity about the hands. It's just rough!

Yes, I'm absolutely blown away that I'm getting supported like this. I'm super humble about it and just drives me to up my game and abilities to bring everyone information and reviews etc! That's one beautiful thing about Astrophotography, looking back into how things were. It's hard to get your head round sometimes!

One thing you didn’t mention Ruzeen is the fact that it doesn’t come supplied with the power adapter to run the cooling. I find it amazing that on a camera that costs just shy of 1k they don’t supply it.

You know what? That always bothered me about ZWO. It was kind of off-putting on a moral standpoint. However, I think it's down to standardization. ZWO is a Chinese company that ships worldwide. I think it's just simpler for them to not include a cable in the box else they'd need to know where they're shipping to etc. This way, they can just ship boxes across the world and then sell the plugs where they're needed as an accessory. Also, most of the time you get plugs that aren't rated for outdoor use. I find that more amazing when they're supplied with astronomy gear that is most likely going to be outdoors...

Yes, had a couple uses out of it now and it's quite good for sure. The square format definitely will be taking some time to get used to however. Wonder if I'll be sold on it myself still but slowly getting used to it already.

Ive been on the fence about this for a while, not many reviews on youtube.. Did you like it? I'm worried about that square sensor lol. Any other recommendations for my first cooled cam? Current set up: eq6r-pro, Z61, two 120mc-s with guide scope and Canon M6mii.

Hey there, yeah I enjoyed this camera a lot. I have a dedicated review for it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHKcmZ-trryJqac The 533 should work well with the Z61, or you could look into the ASI 183mc Pro also which has a smaller sensor but a 3:2 aspect ratio and is incredibly sensitive and high resolution at 22megapixel

I'm interested in the asipro but since I just bought a dedicated laptop for my rig it's not a priority anymore. The EAF, however, it a different idea. Been interested in autofocus for a little while. Just other things vying for my money

Perhaps the square format is an Instagram reach? Jk. No power supply at the price is a killer for me. It’s like buying an expensive apo that needs correction. Oh wait, that’s practically 90% of the market. ZWO is right. Who the hell needs the cord? Lol. Come to think of it, if you crop to a square... you don’t need a field flattener either. Behind the scenes companies like Svbony are reinventing the purchase experience. Somebody better consider contract agreements with IMX etc. before the lower priced competition sells things to the public with power supplies included.
