Yes, they don't. Why would they? People have only upgraded to 1440p in recent years, 1080p is still the most used resolution according to the steam hardware survey. Native 4K is and will never be the standard, it is only reasonable on older titles. It is also just a marketing term for consoles where they render it at low resolutions with 30fps and upscale it which is less noticible on a TV. It all just comes down to the PPI and how close you are to your TV/Monitor.

Alex Batagglia’s Digital Foundry deep dive on this game is enlightening. These stutters don’t seem to be related to shader compilation. It’s next level traversal stuttering + some sort of asset loading/streaming issue. This game is super broken, even the animations are borked. Go see that video.

I have a 4070 ti super and I just locked fps to 60 and ran high settings no RT. It pretty much stays at 60 until stutters happen of course and Im happy with it. They definitely need to drop an update to fix the stutters though. Forgot to add im playing at 4k.

I wholehartedly agree with you about the stutters. When I'm playing a single player story I want maximum immersion and the stutters take me right out of it. I've even tried some configs/mods from Nexus Mods, but there seems to be no way of eradicating them :( Here's hoping they give us a patch to address it... Until then I won't be playing through it the way it is.

Good purchase, I have a GRE and I am happy, there is a small mod that includes FG and I play with RT and everything in epic at 90 FPS. You just have to edit a .ini file of the game.

Just an FYI, this game DOES compile shaders before loading the game. It happens on the loading screen and you should notice your CPU utilization spike. The stutters you're experiencing are traversal stutters from the game continually loading in new areas and assets. These stutters are repeatable and do not go away no matter how much you play the game

From what I can tell based on experience. In this case, the shaders are compiled, given the initial first boot takes a bit longer than the rest. But it's rather a "Traversal stutter" Which has been an issue with all UE4 and UE5 games for a while now. At this point, anytime I see Unreal Engine, Im expecting Shader / Traversal stutters.

This isn't actually shader compilation stutter. It is traversal stutter. XESS input resolution is lower than the input resolution of any other kind of temporal super resolution - so XESS 'balanced mode' is the equivalent of 'performance mode' using any other upscaler. It creates the false impression that XESS is getting you extra frames. This is true all the way up: so DLSS quality = XESS ultra quality; DLSS balanced = XESS quality; DLSS performance = XESS balanced.

Turns out the stutter is worse than just shader compilation stutter. Digital Foundry just put out a great video and they have discovered it's a traversal stutter and poor animation pacing. Meaning the stutters will always happen in the same spots, even though shaders have compiled. Additionally, even if you lock to 30 fps to get a frametime higher than the spikes, which in theory should make stutters unnoticeable, there is an issue with the animations that still makes the experience feel stuttery. Great video btw, I just thought I would provide some context.

It's always consoles getting the game well optimised at launch and PC gamers having to wait at least several months or even a year for the game to be polished. I am sure this game will become well optimised in the future. Games such as Cyberpunk, The Callisto Protocol, and Alan Wake 2 were badly optimised at launch but are way better now. It will be a similar case with Silent Hill 2 Remake, I assume.

Great vid! I'm upgrading to a 4080s shortly. It does hurt spending so much on a gpu and seeing that games these days can't even be played on native most of the time without some AI assistance. I think game devs are really using DLSS etc as an excuse to just not properly optimize their games.

It's not as good as I would have thought, but 30-40 frames per second. never drops below 30 ever. I didn't really notice it was choppy at all, probably because the game is generally slow paced, so it doesn't matter as much. I am running 2560x1440 resolution. So, not perfect, but good enough after many years.

I tested each setting. epic 18-22 FPS high 20-15 FPS medium 25-30 FPS low 30-40 FPS You are making me realize that my card sucks more than I thought. haha. After being disappointed by the awful stuttering in this game,. I revisited a similar survival horror title from a few years ago - Evil Within 2. I absolutely loved playing that game back in the day, and remembered it looking great and having no stuttering issues. Looks like my memory hasn't betrayed me. That title from 2016 still looks very good today. Sure, the textures are much lower res, but the lighting, shadows and overall look is surprisingly close to this Silent Hill Remake, given the 8 year difference between the two games. Most importantly though, Evil Within 2 runs at 3-4 times higher FPS on max settings and produces an almost perfectly smooth frametime graph. What a delightful experience to have after this mess of a game! I am playing on a 4080 + 7800 X3D BTW, but Evil Within 2 worked just fine back in the day on my GTX 1070 + Ryzen 1700. Much lower FPS, sure, but no stuttering and an amazing experience.

Interesting to see these results! On my system which is the 7800x3d and the 7900XTX (32GB DDR5 6000 CL30 ram) I get an average of 65-75 at 4k RT FSR Balanced (Lowest seen is 50fps in silent hill at night, highest 105fps in hallways). Guess it is due to the more focused gaming performance you get with the single CCD of the 7800X3D than the 7950X3d

yea in the bluecreeck apartments frames can drop really really bad. Like I can go from 150-190 with performance DLSS and it can drop to like 50-60 just because I turned a corner with some lighting coming from outside. No spoilers but late game is pretty dark and literally just the red save game light can make my pc lag.

One other thing I noticed is that the stuttering will go away for long periods of time and the game will be smooth as silk. but once you look at your map or pause the game and then continue, the stuttering comes right back! This is all on a 4070ti super.

We're at this weird crossroad where, we lower the game resolution to upscale it and inject frames - just to enable stuff like Ray Tracing or 4K Teenage me wouldn't have believe it lol

Wow I didn’t expect that there is only 15fps difference between 4080s and 7900XTX on RT. Was expecting that the 7900xtx is more like running on 20FPS

The 4080 Super is consuming 100w to 150w less power than the 7900 XTX while performing anywhere from 10% to 30% better. Yikes... This is not a good showing by the 7900 XTX here. You would think that the PS5 being the lead dev platform that Radeon graphics hardware would have the edge in this game. I guess UE5 is just more optimized for nVidia out of the box, especially when using RT. My 4070 Super basically performs on par to a 7900 XTX in this game when RT is on, yet is only using like 180w of power whereas the 7900 XTX is using 350w to 380w.

I mean the 4080 s is no 4k card it is a good 1440p card. The settings for that card should be 1440p epic, Raytracing, dlss quality. But that didn't even get tested, sadly. That would be the only setting I'd play the game on.

TSR on Normal looks better in terms of stability compared to DLSS Quality from what I've noticed. Cabinets and wooden doors have an insane amount of edges when moving the camera. Maybe its cause TSR Normal is rendering 77% instead of DLSS Q at 67%?

Windows may not be able to use Ryzen 7000 processors well. It may be a good idea to set the game's priority to high in task manager or with Process Lasso. I have stutters in every game as well with my 7950X3D and it's so annoying. It doesn't even matter if CCD1 is disabled. Tried setting the FCLK to default, 1800MHz and 2000MHz, disabled core performance boost, tried PBO -20, installed chipset drivers with 3D V-Cache optimizer, etc. Nothing helps to fully get rid of this problem, but setting the priority to high for every game is the only fix so far. This also seems to be the case for Ryzen 8000. I've tested the 8500G and holy frick was it lagging badly.
