No matter WHAT happens with Mary and what you choose, it doesn’t end well. The "good" ending where you always help her ends with her sending him a goodbye letter and his promise ring back. Arthur was never meant to have a happy ending, as he was a lifelong outlaw, symbolizing that Dutch was right, the old west was dying, and so were outlaws.

Maybe it depends on honour like with Mary. My Arthur had low honour when he visited her, and when I refused to answer whether or not to help her, the refuse to help button filled up and the game auto selected that. In high honour, it autos the help button.
